Blanca - claimed the World Health Organisation said their resort was “One of the

healthiest places in the world to live.”

W.H.O. never made the statement. It is not their function to endorse holiday resorts

(although the Chairman of a W.H.O. Committee did visit Jávea and expressed their

personal opinion) but they were referring to Jávea - and it’s still true!The idea for this publication resulted from being told that Councillors elected togovern Jávea in the May 2011 municipal elections, needed a “Directory of What isWhere” to give to newcomers to the Town. Based on his 25 years experience, PastorClive Read created what he thought was needed in 96 hours, but could not resistembroidering the bare facts, which made it impossible for the Town Hall to use it -so it became a Church project. With the Gothic ParishChurch of St. Bartolome atits centre, the narrowstreets remind us they weredesigned with horse andcart in mind.

Wooden front doors, openon the street, behind whichis a labrinth of rooms and aninner courtyard wherelivestock were housed.

Many properties havebeen converted into shopsand intimate cafés, eachwith its own tapas to matchthe atmosphere.

It might look boring, butthe ‘Old Town’ is alwaysfresh, and delivers onpromise.

Despite the danger ofmelanoma of the skin,tourists still pour onto thebeach to gain a sun tan thatwill show their UK friendsthey’ve had a great holiday.

The ‘Sandy’ beach offerssafe bathing - rememberingall bathing by the young orelderly should besupervised - combiningsand that is cleanedovernight, with anabundance of nearby barsand restaurants to suitevery palate and pocket.

There are rope andrubber climbing frames anda special area for disabledbathers at the Southern endof the bay.

Blue bucketsThe entire shoreline of Alicante Province wasmarked in 1988 by a chain ofupturned ‘blue buckets’marking a 100m strip fromthe water’s edge, withinwhich no construction isallowed. You can seeexamples between the alongAvenida Libertad (the beachroad) the most unusual beingbuilt into the Western cornerof the ‘La Siesta’ restaurant.The blue paint has peeled offand the concrete is cracked.They are engraved MGOP.

BusesThe bus service in Jávea isvery poor, with disregard foroutlying areas and any elderlywho can no longer drive.

There is a subsidisedservice from Toscamar to theArenal, Port and Town, that ischeap and reliable, but littleelse.

If you are a Pensionerthere are concessions. Obtainthe form from the Servicesoffice above Parking El Clot,and hand it - after completingyour details, and a photo ofyourself, and the fee, to oneof the bus drivers, who willtell you when they will haveyour ID card with barcode.

Those not of pensionableage can buy a ‘Season Ticket’for 10€uros that buys 13,50€uros of journeys.

ButanoGas in the Cities may bepiped, but in Jávea, mostpeople rely on bottles, thoughsome foreigners andcommercial premises havegas on tap - in a tank.

There are two suppliers:Repsol, whose bottles areorange and heavy. and Cepsa,whose bottles are muchlighter and silver colour.

Your house insurancemay be invalid if you have aclaim and cannot prove thatyour gas installation was safe,with a current (valid for 5years) Certificate.

English speakingSebastian, who lives in Denia,is an independent inspector,authorised by the Ministry ofIndustry, used by many toinspect and certify theirhomes. He can be contactedon 687 480 183.

Itinerant ‘Gas Inspectors’- working only oncommission for out-of-areacompanies - regularly visitJávea, and charge hugeamounts for replacing out-of-date tubing or regulators,using very intimidatingtactics.

Propane and other gasesare available, and there is aspecialist supplier for oxygenand industrial gases, inBenissa.

Cable and Satellite TVMany properties in the Southof Jávea are served byunderground cable from

Balcon al Mar, and some evenreceive internet by cable. Avast range of radio and TVprogrammes from throughoutthe world are available, thecost depending on thepackage you choose.

For those beyond thereach of the cable network,many of the programmes arere-transmitted terrestiallyfrom Costa Nova, or Cabo deSan Antonio.

Camping and CampsitesJávea has two, both withfacilities for static units,intended for all-year-roundoccupation but whichwelcome tourists and theirtents.

Neither are ‘close’ to thebeach, but Camping Naranjosis less isolated than CampingJávea.

The police discourageparking of Campervans on thebeach overnight. Groups ofCampervans appear, fromtime to time, on the Car Parkat Av. Tamarits in the Arenal,and only 200m from thebeach.

CEPSAThe contract for collectinghousehold rubbish is held byCEPSA. Other towns useFCC. Rubbish is collected bydriver-operated semi-automatic lorries, whichupturn street-level orunderground bins into thehopper, whether collectingplastic, cardboard and paperor household rubbish. Glass iscollected in special ‘dome-shaped’ green containers, by aspecialist company.

Tourism - Jávea’s ‘Industry’Jávea’s main ‘industries’ havebeen Construction andTourism, but income fromboth has been drasticallyreduced since 2009. Theinfamous LRAU ‘Land GrabLaw’ by which a strangercould ‘gain the right to build’on land they did not own, andcharge the owner part of thecost for a new infrastructure,without any opportunity ofsharing in any profits, hasdeterred many buyers.

The LRAU wasintroduced to prevent alandowner from frustrating‘Community Projects’ - like aschool, hospital or communitycentre - but was used bycorrupt developers andTownhalls to allow luxuryhomes to be built on stolenland, claiming that ‘high classhomes’ was good for thecommunity. Attempts tooverthrow the Law byAbusosNo have beenunsuccessful, an EU Courtrecently deciding the practicewas NOT unlawful.

Spain does not recognisethe function of a DistrictValuer who would stipulatethe value of the land involved.

Socialists cancelled theRiver Ebro water project andPP endorsed the LRAU,prompting some to suggestthat there is little point invoting in National elections.

One proposal was foreach of the Tourist Offices toact as the Point-of-Contact,receiving requests “expone’s”and giving an indication ofwhen to call back for theanswer. The ‘Expone’ wouldbe moved from office tooffice, rather than theapplicant needing to do so.

The traditional Townhallin Plaza de Iglesia in theTown centre, was vacated forrefurbishment. At the sametime new Council Officeswere created as part of the ElClot parking scheme, butremain unoccupied becausethere are no funds to equipand furnish them.

Meanwhile, the listcontinues to grow:

Town PlanEvery town is obliged to havea “Strategic Plan” whichstates what can - and cannot -happen in different zones. It isnormally revised at 10-yearlyintervals, but the content isbitterly controversial, and itspreparation and approval canoften take 6 or 7 years.Jávea’s new Plan is overdue.

TrainsThe only train in Jávea isprivately owned and runs inSummer months between theArenal and Port. It can behired for events.

Connection to Spain’snational rail network is viaValencia, with Gandia beingthe closest station. Mosttravellers from Jávea join thetrain at its first stop, Xerasco,which is close to the AP-7motorway exit, and has amplefree parking.

There is often talk ofreopening the former linkfrom Gandia to Denia thatwas closed in a “Beeching”exercise, but the project hasnever received centralgovernment funding.

There is a high-speedAVE connection fromValencia to Madrid (93minutes) and a connecting busfrom Jávea and Denia.
