At Home with the Word:This week’s Readings

Isaiah 11:1-10 A vision of the one and true king. The

one who, like David, will lead the people in the ways of God. He is a new shoot on the stump of the old ways. He is the one who will bring peace and justice to the whole world so all might dwell in paradise once again. All this will happen when the Messiah comes.

Romans 15:4-9 Everything that was written before is there to en- courage us to remain strong and to keep waiting in joy-ful hope. Now as the days grow dark let us not lose sight of the Light who is coming: the One who brings para-dise. Fulfillment to the Jews and mercy to the Gentiles.

Matthew 3:1-12 John the Baptist comes to call everyone to repen-tance. The axe lies at the root and any trees that do not bear fruit will be cast into the fire. But there is one who is coming… a new green shoot on the stump of a dead tree... who will bring not fire but the waters of baptism. And with him, he brings paradise!

Called to Serve as Christ update

As of mid-November of this year, the Called to Serve as Christ campaign has raised over $44 million toward the overall goal of $100 million in support of our retired priests’ pension and medical benefits, and to help meet costs for retired religious communities of women who have served the Church in Western Washington for decades. Not only that, but each parish receives back 15% of the funds collected on pledges. Our parish has raised $230,332 toward our campaign goal of $571,860. Thank you for helping us reach our goal! For more information about the campaign and its impact, visit:www.calledtoserveaschrist.org.

Thank You! Thank You to all those who celebrated with us at the 2019 Sacred Heart Oktoberfest Fundraiser, also to those who volunteered their time. The event was a great success and raised the following amounts to sup-port the ongoing mission of Sacred Heart Parish: Auction proceeds: $11,227 Fund-A-Cause (Church Siding): $13,290

Thank you for your generosity!

Guild Turkey Basket Raffle

The Sacred Heart Guild sponsored Turkey Basket Raffle was won by Karen Kralovic. The raffle made a profit of $650 for the church. The members of the Guild thank you very much for your support.

Advent: a time of preparation

Advent is a time of waiting and preparing our lives for the coming of Christ. While Advent is one of my favorite seasons in the church, I know I can get caught up in all the preparations for Christmas-looking forward to what is coming. I always intend to slow down during Advent and try to be mindful of it, but it is a real challenge. I found the resource Rejoice! Advent Meditations with Joseph that has daily meditations and prayers. I invited Young Adults from our parish to also join in this opportunity and we are gath-ering weekly to share with one other about our experience. Each day the meditations invite us to see through the eyes of Joseph as he awaits the birth of his son, Jesus as we await his coming at Christmas.

In the introduction to Rejoice! Fr. Josh Johnson gives a way to plan for prayer time with the Five Ws: When? Where? What? Who? And Why? WHEN will I spend time with Jesus? WHERE will I spend time Jesus? WHAT are Jesus and I going to do together? WHO will me accountable to my time with Jesus? WHY am I prioritizing my time with Jesus?

I hope that you will find this helpful and be able to use it as a guide to set aside time during Advent for prayer. Please keep the Young Adults in your prayers as we contin-ue our Advent journey!

u Advent Prayer vLord Jesus,

Master of both the light and the darkness, send your Holy Spirit upon our preparations for Christmas.

We who have so much to do and seek quiet spaces to hear your voice each day,

We who are anxious over many things look forward to your coming among us.

We who are blessed in so many ways long for the complete joy of your kingdom.

We whose hearts are heavy seek the joy of your presence. We are your people, walking in darkness,

yet seeking the light. To you we say, “Come Lord Jesus!’

Amen.Henri J.M. Nouwen
