Jubilee Year of MercyNovember 29, 2015

First Sunday of AdventBesides a new liturgical year, this Advent features an additional “begin-ning”—next week’s opening of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, a graced opportunity to contemplate more profoundly and live more concretely the mystery of God’s unconditional love. Pope Francis says that mercy, as the bridge con-necting God and the human family, opens our hearts to welcome God’s love for us sinners and our eyes to recognize others, especially society’s least loved and most vulnerable, as brothers and sisters entrusted to our care. Today’s scriptures provide a perfect Jubilee preparation. Jeremiah comforts us with the promise of God’s justice; Paul challenges us to abound in love for all; Luke bids us anticipate Jesus’ future coming as the joyful advent of our redemption. But in a unique way, this Jubilee Year’s Advent reminds us that Jesus, whose coming we await, is already present among us, in those for whom we need to become instruments of God’s mercy.

AdventThe word Advent is from the Latin adventus for “coming” and is associated with the four weeks of preparation for Christmas. Advent always contains four Sundays, beginning on the Sunday nearest the feast of St. Andrew the Apostle, (November 30) and continuing until December 24. It blends together a penitential spirit, very similar to Lent, a liturgical theme of preparation for the Second and Final Coming of the Lord, called the Parousia, and a joyful theme of getting ready for the Bethlehem event.

Since the 900s Advent has been considered the beginning of the Church year. This does not mean that Advent is the most important time of the year. Easter has always had this honor.

The traditional color of Advent is purple or violet which symbolizes the penitential spirit. Religious traditions associated with Advent express all these themes.

DARKNESS AND LIGHTThe Advent candles readily demonstrate the strong contrast between darkness and light. In the Bible, Christ is referred to as the “Light of the World” contrasted with the darkness of sin. Human history spanned long ages before our prophesied Savior would finally make his appearance, and with him God’s promise to make all things new through him. As his Advent, or “coming,” draws nearer another candle is lit, each candle dispelling the darkness a little more. Thus, the Advent wreath helps us to spiritually contemplate the great drama of salvation history that surrounds the birth of God Incarnate who comes to redeem the human race.

In addition, two Priests here at Santa Cruz will be hear-ing confessions on Tuesday, Dec. 15th from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon for the elderly, those who cannot drive & for those who work at night.

Men invited to consider the DiaconateHave you recently become aware of a desire to deepen your faith life, but not sure why? Do you feel that your heart is being moved inexplicably in a new or bold way lately? Have you felt of late a greater need to know Christ more intimately, or a growing desire to follow him more fully, for some unknown reason? For no apparent reason, has your awareness increased recently of the needs of the materially and spiritually poor - and perhaps even sensed a greater desire to respond? Do you live a mature faith, love the church, and follow church teaching, but have a nagging sense that there’s something missing?

If you answered yes to some of these questions, and you are a man between 30 and 57, the Holy Spirit might be calling you to explore the permanent diaconate. Does that possibility excite you? Scare you? Puzzle you? Whatever your reaction, talk to your pastor about what’s going on in your heart. He’ll help you decide next steps.

The diaconal formation class of 2022 will begin forming in January 2017. Inquiry sessions are scheduled (in Spanish and English) from 2-5 p.m., at the following locations.

With your pastor’s permission, explore diaconal formation at one of these sessions. For more information, call: Deacon Rey Garza at (512) 496-3141 or 512-949-2459; email [email protected]; or visit http://www.austindiocese.org/offices-ministries/offices/diaconal-ministry-office.

SANTA CRUZ CATHOLIC SCHOOL/ESCUELA CATOLICA

News from the Principal’s DeskHappy Thanksgiving to all Santa Cruz parishioners from all of

us here at Santa Cruz Catholic School. May you have an abundance of things to be thankful for this Thanksgiving.

Our school students are busy preparing for their Christmas programs which will be held the last week of school before our Christmas holiday. We also have adopted angels from our school Angel Tree, which is our school-wide service project for this fall semester. Excitement is growing as the season of Advent is upon us!

Have a blessed week,Mrs. Flanagan

Bendiciones,Sra. Flanagan

Santa Cruz Catholic School will be selling Butter Braids Pastry Dough during the month of November for the upcoming holiday season. Butter Braids arrive frozen, simply thaw and bake. They come in 7 different flavors: Blueberry and Cream Cheese, Apple, Double Chocolate, Cinnamon, Cream Cheese, Bavarian Cream with Chocolate Icing and Strawberry and Cream Cheese. Each Butter Braid is $13.00.

We will have an order form available at the School’s Front Office if you wish to place your order. Butter Braids are wonderful for entertaining, they also make great gifts and even better on Christmas morning!

The Santa Cruz Catholic School Advisory Board has an opening on its board. We are looking for a parishioner who has a love for development and could work with the Development Com-mittee helping it with its fundraising events. If interested, please contact the school office for an Advisory Board Member Application. If you have questions, please contact Mrs. Flanagan, Principal, at (512) 312-2137.

OUTSIDE ORGANIZATIONSSave-the-Date: Celebration of Our Lady of GuadalupeMark your calendar for Saturday, Dec. 5. All are welcome to gather at St. Anthony Marie de Claret at 8 a.m. to process through the streets of Kyle as we honor and sing to Our Lady. The procession will end back at the parish where Bishop Daniel Garcia, Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Austin will celebrate Mass. After the Mass we will celebrate Our Lady with food and festivities! A processional book with ads from business and organiza-tions from across the diocese will be distributed to all attendees. If you, your parish organization or business would like more information on how to join in on this great day, please contact Edgar Ramirez at [email protected] or (512) 949-2468.
