A self-guided tour
Welcome to our campus
The new millennium has signalled a period of dynamic growth for the University of York due to an increasing demand for student places and expanding research projects. Since 2000, we have invested in over 30 new buildings and completed the initial phases of a £750m campus expansion. For York students this investment has meant major improvements to existing buildings, including a rolling programme to refurbish the interiors of our iconic 1960s CLASP architecture such as Derwent College, designed by Andrew Derbyshire. This ongoing programme is across the board, encompassing teaching rooms and lecture theatres, IT facilities and laboratories, as well as facilities for culture, sport and social activities and student accommodation.
Teaching and research environments for students, staff and researchers have been enhanced by the University Library’s £20m renewal programme. Open 24/7, it provides world-class technology and media-rich learning, all in close proximity to specialist support and physical collections. An extra 500 study spaces have been created for students and researchers as well as areas for group work and open collaborative zones. The £11m Berrick Saul Building,
built in 2009, represented the largest investment in the humanities by any UK university. It has unrivalled facilities for postgraduate students and is a hub for interdisciplinary research in the arts and humanities and for events.
Students’ Union (YUSU) offices and social spaces have been expanded and upgraded and The Courtyard, YUSU’s central licensed venue, features a covered, heated outdoor seating area. Other campus cafés, bars and restaurants have been revitalised to offer an even wider choice of food in contemporary, relaxing surroundings, all with free Wifi access.
The camaraderie of college life is an important part of the student experience at York, and each of our eight colleges has its own distinctive character and ethos. We have completed major upgrades to kitchens, bedrooms and living areas while brand new accommodation was built on Heslington East for one of the oldest colleges, Goodricke. Langwith College also moved to the new site in 2012 and now provides self-catering facilities for 650 students – from first-years to postgraduates – in a village-style setting. The new facilities include the Glasshouse, a student union-run bar and restaurant.
The University of York Since its opening in 1963, the University of York has risen to become one of the best universities in the UK and has powered its way to a consistently high ranking. From small beginnings, with just 230 students, we are now home to nearly 15,000 students from 120 countries spread across eight colleges.

More than £240m has been invested in the stunning campus expansion at Heslington East, the largest single investment made by any UK university. The new site is now home to four of the University’s academic departments: Computer Science, Theatre, Film and Television, Law and Management.
Central to Heslington East is the Ron Cooke Hub which includes an ‘Enterprise Zone’ for student-run businesses with high specification computing and video-conferencing facilities and business incubation support. This new facility also gives students the opportunity to see a range of world-class speakers, exhibitions and performances through our public lecture programme and alumni networking events.
Advanced sports complex
York Sport Union has the most sports clubs per student in the country and a quarter of the student population is actively engaged in sport. Our college system allows athletes to compete at a level close to their capability, before progressing to higher performance levels. We are now working towards national
respect, recognition and reward, by adding to our excellent existing facilities at York Sport Centre. York Sport Village at Heslington East opened in 2012. This £9m development, together with our already established resources, is one of the region’s most advanced sports complexes. York Sport Village forms only part of our strategy for sport across the whole campus. We are actively working to ensure greater participation from the broad base of students and developing programmes to support performance and identifying ways to support elite athletes.
Running parallel to our campus investment is a commitment to sustainable development, balancing environmental protection and enhancement with social responsibility and financial viability. The original campus was built in the grounds of Heslington Hall, an Elizabethan country house, and maintains a parkland feel with natural planting, water and native tree and plant species. The landscape at Heslington East reflects this – it features green corridors, a lake and woodland. There are extensive areas of wetland to encourage biodiversity which are already attracting rare bird species.
Tours of the campus
On pages 4–6 you’ll find maps of the campus with suggested routes that take you to significant buildings and places to help you get a feel for what it’s like to be a student at the University of York. We recommend you do the main tours of Heslington West and Heslington East. The secondary tour takes you to further corners of Heslington West.
Do include a visit to the city of York, especially if you plan to study one of the subjects based at King’s Manor, our city centre premises. There’s a map showing the location of King’s Manor on the inside back cover.
We’ve also listed cafés around the campus where you can stop off for refreshments.
You can download audio tracks to accompany this booklet at www.york.ac.uk/campus-tours. You’ll find a alongside any stops on the tour which have an accompanying audio track.

City of York If you come to the University of York you’ll be spending a good part of your time living, socialising and possibly working in the city. As well as being voted the best and most beautiful place to live in the UK, York is also a friendly, welcoming place, with a compact city centre where you can walk or cycle everywhere.
Right in the heart of York is the King’s Manor, a collection of largely medieval buildings, and home to the Department of Archaeology, and the Centres for Medieval and Eighteenth Century Studies. Nearby is York Minster Library, which is particularly valuable to students of medieval literature and history.
Buses to and from York city centreYou can get to the city centre by taking a number 4 or number 44 bus from Heslington Hall or the University Library, or a number 44 bus from Heslington East. Either bus will take you to York Railway Station. Buses leave the campus approximately every 10 minutes from 7am to 7pm, and every 15 minutes at other times. To get back to the campus take a bus from the station or stops along the route.
