Welcome to our 2017/2018 Season Dear Philharmonic audience:
As we go into our ninth season, I am so proud of what the Savannah Philharmonic has become. Every aspect of this organization motivates me – the staff, board, chorus and orchestra – but it is you, our faithful audience, who motivate all of us. You continue to sell out our concerts, and this year you even sold out the Johnny Mercer Theater to hear us. Thank you!
As I mentioned, this is our ninth season, and the Ninth Symphony is a landmark for many composers, including Bruckner, Schubert and Mahler. So it’s no coincidence that we have chosen Beethoven’s epic Ninth Symphony with its Ode to Joy, and Dvořák’s Ninth, “From the New World,” as centerpieces of our program.
I’m also particularly looking forward to the Philharmonic playing Brahms’s Fourth Symphony, and hearing the Chorus in “Hiawatha’s Wedding Feast,” a piece that has always been one of my favorites. Playing a concert of Billy Joel and Elton

John hits one month after performing a Baroque repertoire evening just shows how versatile this orchestra is! Our Holiday concert continues to be a favorite of Savannah, and Picnic in the Park draws huge crowds to hear an evening of great music. A personal highlight for me will be to work with my dear friend, pianist Margaret Singer, who will perform Mozart’s Concerto No. 21 in our opening concert, paired with Rimsky-Korsakov’s orchestral showpiece Scheherazade. This will see the orchestra in flying form yet again. And, as you will see in the following pages, there is much more.
We are deeply grateful to all of you, audience members, donors and supporters; you give us the opportunity to make extraordinary music for Savannah. I’m looking forward to seeing you all again throughout the wonderful 2017/2018 season. A million thanks to you all!

EDUCATION PROGRAMSOrchestra Lab Rehearsal Experience. The Savannah Philharmonic is excited to launch its new Orchestra Lab program for the 2017/2018 season, in which students from the Savannah area attend working Philharmonic rehearsals. Curriculum materials are sent to schools ahead of time. Before the rehearsal, students are treated to a forty-minute presentation given by members of the Philharmonic. The students then have the unique opportunity to watch and listen to Artistic Director Peter Shannon rehearse a now familiar piece and see professional musicians hard at work in preparation for the upcoming concert.
Orchestra Lab Sectionals. Many of these students also work with musicians from the Philharmonic in our Orchestra Lab Sectionals program. Musicians go to area schools where students might not have access to private lessons. Working closely with teachers, our musicians visit throughout the year to work on repertoire, set goals, and give tips for good practice habits.
Masterclasses. We present featured soloists and members of the orchestra in masterclasses at area schools and universities, helping deepen students’ understanding of their instruments and repertoire.
In-School Performances. Groups of our musicians appear at schools throughout Savannah to excite young minds about classical music.
INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE PROGRAMSIntegrative Medicine looks beyond the patient as a physical body. It is the practice of treating the person holistically: body, mind and spirit. It separates or distinguishes between pain and suffering, curing and healing. A passionate believer in the healing power of music, Peter Shannon has developed this program – empirically proven to be a support to traditional medicine – here and elsewhere over the last decade. Hundreds of patients have benefitted from the power of live music played by Savannah Philharmonic musicians.
Dr. Guy Petruzzelli, Physician in Chief at the Curtis and Elizabeth Anderson Cancer Institute, has been a huge support to Shannon in this work. Petruzzelli says of the program:
“We know very clearly that traditional cancer therapy such as surgery, radiation, chemotherapy – even these sophisticated chemotherapy drugs that we have now – really only take the patient so far in their treatment process. These Integrative Medicine programs, particularly music, go a long way to help the patients tolerate and accept their therapy, enhancing their recovery. It’s a very important part of our program at the A.C.I.”
The Magic Flute. Artistic Director and Conductor Peter Shannon developed a version of Mozart’s Magic Flute for children receiving care in the Willet Children’s Hospital at Memorial Health. The twenty-minute comedic performance brings smiles and laughter to the young patients, their families and caregivers. Members of the Savannah Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus perform, sing, dance, and frolic in professionally designed costumes to create a truly authentic production. Following the show, each child receives a souvenir tiara and/or kazoo (flute), coloring book, and crayons. This imaginative presentation brings the power of joy to the healing process.
Major funding for the Savannah Philharmonic is provided by the City of
Savannah’s Department of Cultural Affairs.
