Scenario 1

A student has been failing to show up to labs in the past few weeks – you don’t know much about them other than their name, except you did notice they appeared agitated in class, at times, and their behaviour just seemed ‘odd’. What do you do?T

Your TA brings you two papers, from two different students, and it’s quite clear that they are very, very similar, and even use the same quotes form the primary sources, and have the same bibliography. What do you do?T

Scenario 3

You have a very good relationship with some students in your grad discussion class. After class, a female student comes to you to tell you that she is being sexually harassed, online, by someone else in that grad discussion class. What do you do?T

Scenario 4

You are trying to be friendly and compassionate. You believe creating a good relationship with your students is quite crucial to learning. You are responsive to their needs. Some students in your class have been emailing you asking to friend them on Facebook. What do you do?T

You have just received your students’ mid-terms. The great majority of your class is doing very, very poorly (in fact, most have not received a passing grade). The situation in the classroom is tense. What do you do? How do you adapt? T

Stages toward tenure:

• Reappointment consideration (3rd year)

• Tenure consideration:- Not later than the 6th year for Asst. Profs- Not later than the 5th year for Assoc. Profs- Not later than the 4th year for Full Profs

Reappointment and tenure consideration maybe be delayed in specific circumstances (i.e., periods of authorized leave).

• Academic freedom in teaching and research• “a sufficient degree of economic security to make the

• A tenured faculty member should be terminated only for “adequate cause” following fair and proper procedures, or in narrow circumstances for demonstrably bona fide financial exigency

Academic freedom is central to McGill University’s mission of advancing learning through teaching, scholarship and service to society.

The scholarly members of the university have the freedom to pursue research and artistic creation and to disseminate their results, without being constrained by political or disciplinary orthodoxies, monetary incentives or punitive measures as a result of their academic pursuits. They may exercise this freedom in the service of both the university and the wider society. When scholarly members of the university participate in public forums and debates, they should represent their views as their own.

The exercise of academic freedom requires collegial governance with the full participation of scholarly members. They retain the right of free expression, including the freedom to criticize one another, university policies and administration.

The university and its officers have a duty to protect the academic freedom of its scholarly community, both individually and collectively, from infringement and undue external influence as well as to maintain the university’s institutional autonomy.

Academic Duties

Assessment for Reappointment Performance of academic duties must show promise of – and progresstowards – meeting the criteria for tenure.

Minimum Assessment for Tenure Superior performance in two categories

(NB: for librarians, one of two Superior assessments must be for Position Responsibilities)

Academic Duties• An academic unit must provide expectations/criteria for

reappointment and tenure (in writing) within 2 months of initial appointment. If you don’t get these, ask!

• Academic duties are assigned by the head of the academic unit

• Staff members are expected to be engaged in academic duties throughout the year, and to be available for such duties from Sept 1st to the day after Spring Convocation

Academic Duties2.1 Members of the University have a duty to:

(i) act responsibly, ethically and fairly with care, diligence, and loyalty and be accountable for their actions and decisions in the workplace;

(ii) arrange their affairs in a manner that will bear public scrutiny;

(iii) disclose Conflicts of Interest as soon as they are aware of them and address or manage them in the best interests of the University community;

(iv) not act, after ceasing to be a Member, in such a manner as to take improper advantage of his or her prior association with the University.

• January 22nd, 2017 MAUT Winter Magic Brunch at the McGill Faculty Club from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm for members and families. Come fight the post-holiday blues with shared good cheer and a hearty brunch. Entertainment for the kids!

• March 19th, 2017 MAUT Family Discovery Workshop on Whales at the Redpath Museum for members’ children will take place on Mar. 19, 2017 @ 11h30 - 12h30. Learn about whales, dolphins and other marine mammals from Canada's northern waters. Touch their huge bones and brush-like teeth called baleen. Every participant makes a floatable origami whale to take home.

• March 31st, 2017 Beyond “Awkward”: Strategies for Improving Your Students’ Writing.

• April 21st, 2017 The MAUT Annual Tenure and Mentoring Workshop will take place at 9:00 am to 11:30 am and offered to members only. Topics include: preparing for the renewal and tenure processes, departmental mentoring, the teaching and research portfolios, and the experiences from newly renewed and promoted academics.
