Greetings from all of us here at IHCC33!
A word from our President, Carl Overmyer…………..
“Carl’s Comments”
To begin with, I’m happy to announce that our harvest is complete. It seems to have been
a little wetter than in previous years, which forced us to miss our goal of being done by
Halloween, but that is farming! We had fairly average yields this year so we’re hoping for a rally
in grain markets to help make ends meet. Currently we are still cleaning up all of our harvest
equipment, but have several jobs for our excavator and dump truck to keep busy. There never
seems to be an end to cleaning old fence rows and hauling dirt and stone.
Coming soon on December 2nd
is our annual Christmas meeting and party at Christo’s
Banquet Hall in Plymouth, Indiana. We will be starting the meeting at 11 with a meal at noon
and the benefit auction to follow. We still want IH items to be donated for you to receive credit
towards your meal. It would be wonderful for everyone to make it to the meeting as we will be
electing three directors for the upcoming term.
I would like everyone to keep in mind the National Winter Convention in Kalamazoo,
Michigan from February 28th
– March 2nd
. It is not very far from northern Indiana and should be
a nice place to visit with plenty of things to see and do. I plan on attending with my wife and
another couple so I would like to see you all there!
In addition to those shows and events, I’m also thinking of my winter shop restoration
projects. I hopefully have enough time for another complete tractor restoration. Also, I plan to
get a few items ready for the national IH auction at Polk’s auction company in New Paris,
Indiana. The auction is September 27th
and 28th
and will surely be here before we know it, so I
hope you all are thinking ahead for it as well. I know there will be a good turnout of items to buy
and sell.

Membership News

Chapter #33 Election Of Directors

end of 2018. Elections for new directors will be held at the Chapter #33 Christmas Party.

Recipe of the Month: Zucchini Bread (Sharon Lindzy)
3 eggs, beaten 2 cups zucchini, peeled and finely grated
1 tsp. baking powder 1 cup vegetable oil
1 tsp. salt 2 ½ cups sugar
3 cups flour 1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. vanilla 1 tsp. backing soda
1 cup walnuts
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Beat eggs, oil, and sugar together. Add zucchini and
vanilla and mix together. Add dry ingredients and nuts and mix together. Grease
and flour two loaf pans. Pour bread mixture into pans. Bake at 350 degrees for
one hour or until done.
Around The Corner – By Rob Meyers To begin, I must say that I work for the greatest men in the world! As a part of my job, I often do demolition. Recently I did a demo job in
Michigan and there were several buildings on this project, including a collapsing boat house. As usual, I always search for good things left
behind. And as fate would have it, around the corner under the steps in this boat house sat a 1926 McCormick Deering engine. My boss, being
generous and knowing my affinity for International Harvester, gave it to me. This will be my barn find story of the year. Amazingly, it looked
complete and in fairly good condition. I assumed after setting so long it would be stuck, but it wasn’t. What a plus! That evening I knocked down
a wall, hooked a chain on, and pulled the engine out into the sunlight after a long nap. Also among the rubble of the dilapidated building was the
original muffler, crank handle, and two belt pulleys. The next step was to take the pressure washer to it, then I oiled it down. And WOW what a
transformation! After looking the 6 HP over, the decision was made to leave it in its original condition. For good measure I decided to go through
the engine so it would run well. Here’s a list of repairs made: hone cylinder, lap valves, replaced fuel tank, rebuilt mixer, rebuilt magneto, cleaned
and lubed governor and valve linkage. Two things we found in the refreshing process was the cylinder had very little ridge and minimal wear.
Secondly, the shims on the crankshaft still have paint on them, which leads me to conclude that none have been removed. After careful
assessment, the only logical conclusion is that this McCormick has seen very little use. The McCormick Deering type M engine was prolific and
the one I found is by no means rare, but you will be hard pressed to find one in this nice of condition with such little use. At this point, I must
give special thanks for my friend Jerry LeCount for all his knowledge and help. I can’t imagine my life without him in it. Thanks Jerry! If you're
interested, there's a video of the first time we started the engine on Youtube at the Plowed Under Productions channel. In conclusion, what’s to be
learned from this story is that when you peak around the corner you never know what you’ll find.

Chapter #33 Plow Day, October , 2018
The annual Chapter #33 Plow Day was held on October 20th this year, after being postponed a week. The
weather didn’t cooperate on Friday night. We had light rain which forced the cancellation of the hot dog
roast, and put plowing in jeopardy for the next day. The rain was very light, so because of the sandy soil
we were able to pull it off. The forecast for Saturday was windy and rain beginning at noon, so all these
factors contributed to a low turnout. But that's enough negative, because everybody who showed up had
fun. This year, mostly large tractors showed up which enabled us to plow almost the same acreage as last
year. We also had a young man named Jeremiah who showed up with a Cub Cadet and he had never
plowed before. So I gave him a few pointers and told him to keep adjusting and soon he was doing a great
job. He had a wonderful time and was appreciative. The smile on his face could not have been any wider.
In my book, that’s why this club exists...to pass on knowledge and preserve agricultural history. Another
positive was that we had four first timers show up. It's always good to have new people and make new
friends. Overall the Plow Day, despite Mother Nature's curve balls, was a success. A big thanks goes to
Mahlon Martin and Loren Shaum; without their help this day would not have been possible.
