Ocean Shores, a 6-mile-long peninsula bordered by the Pacific Ocean and Grays Harbor, is a small town located right on the coast of the Pacific Ocean.

It is Washington State’s number one destination for beach enthusiasts, welcom-ing more than 3 million visitors annually, featuring easy access to over six miles of sandy beaches with lots of fun activities for people of all ages. The climate is mild; never too hot or cold. Summers stay pleasantly under 80 degrees. Features of the area include two lakes, 23 miles of canals and a rain forest in the center of the city. Residents and visitors to Ocean Shores find plenty to do besides go to the beach. Other activities include miniature golf, horseback riding, boating and hiking. The city offers golf, birdwatching and a host of curious antique shops. With more than 17 annual shows and festivals, there is always something to do in this small town.

1) Playing/relaxing on the beachLet’s face it, most people go the Ocean for the beach! Ocean Shores has over six miles of sandy beaches, which are HUGE, especially at low tides. Bring yourself a beach chair and some sand buckets and you and the family can spend the whole day walking the beach, looking for sand dollars and shells, making sand castles, playing in the surf (at least in the summer when the water temperature is decent), flying kites, or just plain sitting in your beach chair reading a book and relaxing with the sights, smells and sounds of the ocean surf. The beach is so huge at Ocean Shores that you never feel crowded, even in the summer time when tourist activity picks up. You don’t really need to bring too many beach supplies with you either, as there are many shops in town that sell sand pails, kites, etc. etc.

2) Riding the wavesThe waves at Ocean Shores are magnificent for Boogie board surfing and easy to ride with a decent board. In August the water temperature is pretty decent, warm enough to go out in just a bathing suit, but since you never really know what the weather will be like it’s advisable to wear a wetsuit. There is as surf shop in town where you can buy or

rent surf boards, boogie boards, beach skimmers, and wetsuits. The rental fees are pret-ty cheap if you rent by the day. Boogie board surfing is awesome at Ocean Shores. One thing to be careful of when surfing is the rip tides. They can pull you out into the ocean if you get caught in one and don’t know how to get out of. The tip is to swim PARALLEL until you get out of the riptide.

3) Moped riding on the beachIt’s a total blast bombing down the beach on a moped, and there are several places in Ocean Shores where you can rent mopeds by the hour. The rental shops also rent out all sorts of other pedal-operated vehicles: 3-wheelers, bicycles, and 4-wheeled gizmos that up to four people can ride which don’t operate too well on the sandy beach but are much fun pedaling around town. Located throughout downtown Ocean Shores are vendors who rent novelty bikes, surreys, carts and mopeds. These rentals are nearly as popular as horseback riding on the beach. They are rented in 30 minute increments. Mo-ped rentals do require a driver’s license to rent and drive, and they must obey the laws of the road. Check out Affordable Mopeds (located at 896 Ocean Shores Blvd., Ocean Shores, WA 98569)

4) BikingOcean Shores offers excellent biking with very little elevation change (Ocean Shores is virtually flat), and with numerous bike trails. With 120 miles of picturesque roadways, this is the perfect place to bring your bikes for a relaxing sojourn. There are marked bike routes, and some of the best and most scenic are on the bay side of Ocean Shores. Cycle your way from one side of the peninsula to the other, stopping to appreciate the sites normally missed in a car. Most of the major roads have marked bike lanes for your safety. With more roads than many large cities, you’ll want to bring along a map just in case you lose your way.

5) Horseback riding on the beachHorseback riding is available on the beach where you ride slowly down the beach as a group. Horseback Riding is available on the beach as well as trail rides. A very popular activity for non-riders as well as the pros. Available year round, but call to make sure. Chenois Creek Horse Rentals (360) 533-5591. Honey Pearl Ranch offers horseback riding for children and adults. You can ride on the ranch year-round, on the beach from Feb-ruary to September or choose pony rides for children under age 7. To ride the horses, the weight limit is 240 pounds, only one person is allowed on a horse at a time, and horseback rides on the beach must be at a walking pace. No running or cantering on the beach is allowed. Honey Pearl Ranch 32 Humptulips Valley Road Ocean Shores, WA 98569 360-580-1150 honeypearl.com.

6) Kite flying on the beachOne of the most popular and fun activities to do on the beach in Ocean Shores is flying kites. There is a great shop with a huge variety of kites, windsocks, beach toys and much much more. Kite flying at Ocean Shores is terrific. A prevailing breeze off the Pacific al-most guarantees kite flying weather every day of the year. And there are plenty of places in Ocean Shores to purchase everything from a basic kite to multi-layered and fighting kites. Enjoy the Ocean Shores International Kite Challenge, one of Washington’s largest kite festivals featuring stunt kite competitions, displays, fun fly’s, free kite flying lessons, merchants, beach vendors and more. June 2nd, 3rd and 4th.

7) Ocean Shores Interpretive Center and MuseumOcean Shores Interpretive Center, a non-profit organization, is free to visit. The center provides information, hands-on exploration, exhibits with animals and a movie. Fea-tures include a new habitat room, expanded outdoor exhibits, a children’s area, geology exhibits, an eagle’s nest and a history of the SS Catala. This small museum, interpretive center and tourist information center is quite good for a city of this size, and has quite a lot of local information, both for the city and for the surrounding area. Included in the

Lots of pirate-related gear for sale here, for you pirate types, GAAAW-WWRRR! The City of Ocean Shores occupies the Point Brown peninsula on the Washington coast. Long before the arrival of European explorers and settlers, the peninsula was used by the various local tribes for trading and other purposes. The Chinook, Chehalis, and Quinault Tribes used the area, as well as others that now make up the Quinault Indian Nation.

On May 7, 1792 Captain Robert Gray sailed into the bay and named the area Bullfinch Harbor. Later, Captain George Vancouver renamed the area after Captain Gray, now called Gray’s Harbor.

The first white established settler on the Point was Matthew McGee, who settled in the early 1860s. He sold the southern portion of the peninsula to A.O. Damon in 1878 for a trading supply center whose dock extended into the Oyehut channel.

A.O. Damon took over the entire peninsula from McGee with the land passed along to his grandson, Ralph Minard, who used the area as a cattle ranch from 1929 until he sold to the Ocean Shores Development Corporation in 1960 for $1,000,000.

At the time the Washington State legislature was considering legalizing some forms of gambling. In expectation of a huge casino development, the Ocean Shores Development Corporation opened their sale of lots in a travel trailer parked in the dunes.

Soon the word spread about the California-style development of the place called Ocean Shores. The price of lots began at $595 and were sold sight unseen from the first plat maps. As the numbers of lots sold rose, the prices rose.

Property lots were staked and numbered only as the road construction crews began to lay out the massive road system. Even though the first roads were only 20 miles (32 km) in length, the downtown area had mercury vapor lights to show that this was a booming city.

In the first year 25 homes were constructed and their owners had charter membership certificates in the Ocean Shores Community Club.

As the development grew, the Ginny Simms Restaurant and Nightclub brought in the Hollywood set.

In fact, on Grand Opening night chartered planes flew up a whole contingent of Holly-wood stars, and 11,000 people turned out at Bowerman Basin to see the celebrities.

By December, 1960, 25 miles (40 km) of canals were planned, a six-hole golf course was drawing players, and the mall shopping area was ready for the 1961 Ocean Shores Es-tates construction boom.

The mall, 100 motel units, three restaurants and the airstrip sprang up from the sandy ground with the marina opening in 1963. The SS Catala was brought up from California to become a “boatel” and charter fleet office.

Two years later a southwest winter storm drove her into the sand and for many years she was the most famous shipwreck on the Washington Coast. In 1966 the famous gates to the city were installed.

Pat Boone became a local resident in 1967 as a stockholder in the Ocean Shores Estates Incorporated and promotion of the development was sped along by the famous Celeb-rity Golf tournaments hosted by Boone.

By 1969 Ocean Shores was declared the “Richest Little City” with an assessed valuation of $35 million and 900 permanent residents. The following year the city was incorporat-ed with a planning commission formed to zone the city and codify streets.

The city’s first school opened in 1971 and road paving on streets began in earnest.

During the 1970s, the town struggled through many setbacks brought on mainly by the state’s economic recession. By the 1980s, the slump was over and construction of homes and businesses increased.
