During an era in which we are bombarded by negative news and seem to bounce

from one global crisis to the next, it’s easy to be pessimistic about our future prospects. However, Dr. Peter Diamandis believes the best days of humanity are ahead of us. “Over the past 100 years, we’ve seen extraordinary progress of the human condition — doubling of our lifespan, reduction of food costs, reduction in energy and transportation costs — all driven by technology,” he observes. “The rate of technology power keeps increasing, which will continue to drive our progress. “I’m not saying we don’t have our set of problems,” he adds, “but ultimately we knock them down.” Diamandis brings a unique perspective on problem-solving to Tuesday’s keynote address, sponsored by Agile Technologies. He is chairman and CEO of the X

PRIZE Foundation, which leads the world in designing and launching large incentive prizes to drive radical breakthroughs for the benefit of humanity. Best known for the $10 million Ansari X PRIZE for private spaceflight and the $10 million Progressive Automotive X PRIZE for 100 mile-per-gallon equivalent cars, the foundation is now launching prizes in exploration, life sciences, energy and education.

Diamandis is also an international leader in the commercial space arena, having founded and run some of the top entrepreneurial companies in this sector, including Zero Gravity Corporation, the Rocket Racing League, and Space Adventures. He is also co-founder and chairman of the Singularity University, a Silicon Valley-based institution partnered with NASA, Google, Autodesk and Nokia. Diamandis counsels the world’s top enterprises on how to utilize exponential technologies and incentivized innovation to dramatically accelerate their business objectives.

A Future of Disruption Diamandis’ personal motto is, “The best way to predict the future is to create it yourself,” and he brings that message to his keynote address. “Any company that doesn’t understand the rate of change that is happening will get crushed by it,” he says, adding that the insurance sector in particular is on the brink of market-altering change. “The insurance industry is ripe for disruption,” he says. “If you are not disrupting your industry or company, it will be disrupted for you.” To succeed in this environment, insurers need to learn from companies in other sectors that have faced transformational forces. “Even though Kodak created the digital camera, their creation ultimately drove them into bankruptcy because they still thought they were in the paper and chemical business. They were a linear-thinking organization. Companies need to be exponentially thinking organizations,” Diamandis says. Exponential thinking requires taking a perspective from outside one’s own company. “You need to explore what you would do if

you were a competitor looking to disrupt your industry,” he asserts. “What are the startups you would create, and how can you form or invest in those? How can you take a leadership position and get ahead of the disruption instead of being passive?”

Three Drivers Diamandis will frame his presentation along three main areas of focus. The first deals with the increasing power of technology. “The rapid rise of computational power that has given birth to artificial intelligence, 3D printing, and more is transforming the ability of entrepreneurs to change the world and empowering small teams and groups to do extraordinary things that had previously been possible only by governments and large groups before,” he says. Technology will continue its transformation of society, which will in turn disrupt the insurance industry. “Autonomous cars will change the nature of automobile insurance. In health insurance, artificial intelligence will transform the business by leveraging technology that is already ubiquitous in other areas,” Diamandis predicts. For example, he sees a human equivalent of automobile telematics devices being used to promote wellness. “Today my car has a hundred microprocessors constantly transmitting megabits of data, but people do not. That will change. By the end of this decade we’ll be wired and dribbling bits of data. Your Google Glasses will pop up with medical appointments based on your current physical condition. We’ll use ubiquitous networks to reduce health and other risks.” The second area of focus deals with the need to incentivize innovation. “You get what you incentivize,” Diamandis explains. “There is so much data and computational power available that

can be leveraged to create data-mining and other competitions to find innovative solutions to challenges.” Incentivizing innovation is a particularly relevant topic for the insurance industry. “We will have more and more information available on people and lifestyles — when and where they exercise, their social network strength, and more. The question becomes how insurers can start to correlate secondary or tertiary data that are becoming available to become more proficient providers,” he says. The third will focus on the rise of crowdsourcing. “If you are clear of where you want to go and what your objectives are, you can tap into cognitive genius around the world,” he posits. Diamandis sets his sights on big problems and big solutions, and encourages IASA conference attendees to do the same. “A tsunami of change is coming that will transform the world. You can have access to the forces driving that change and take advantage of them to provide a better, faster, and cheaper product and service. Disruptive change can be frightening. But it’s going to happen whether we want it to or not, concludes Diamandis. “It is essential to wake up, get motivated, and get a vision over the horizon. If fear wakes you up, so much the better.”

Now in its seventh year, the 2013 IASA Executive EDGE Conference has

emerged as a must-attend event for insurance industry executives and C-suite members.

“Each year attendance at the EDGE conference grows,” says Mary Ellen Freyermuth, director of MIS with the Catholic Mutual Group and an IASA volunteer with the Executive Education Program. “We work hard to secure great speakers and put together an impactful, educational, and interactive program for busy executives.”

Slated for Hartford, Conn., Sept. 29-30, this year’s EDGE conference features an opening keynote address by Jay Fishman, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Travelers Companies, Inc. Fishman’s talk is designed to be a candid conversation on

topics ranging from industry-specific issues to current global matters that impact people both professionally and personally.

“We’re excited to have Jay Fishman as our keynote because of the energy and enthusiasm he brings to issues that are facing the insurance industry domestically and globally,” Freyermuth explains. “Departing from the traditional keynote format to include questions from

the audience will make this session even more valuable.”

New TwistsEDGE stands for

Education Dedicated to Growth and Excellence. IASA created its Executive Education Program (EEP) several years ago to support the education and networking needs of senior executives in the insurance industry. This annual EDGE Conference is part of the EEP and is an exclusive offering for high-level executives who are members of IASA.

“All EEP events are designed with the schedules of executives in mind, which is why the EDGE Conference is a one-day event,” Freyermuth says.

Freyermuth adds that the 2013 program features

targeted content and a collaborative environment to deliver both an educational experience and a networking opportunity. The 2013 program features industry experts and will also include two

discipline-specific breakout discussions: information management/technology; and finance and investment.

“We decided to shake up the breakout sessions as well,” Freyermuth says. “Rather than simply have submitted topics to discuss, we will have an open forum and a café-type setting, with different tables set up and session facilitators at each table.”

Each table will be covered with white butcher paper where attendees can write down their thoughts on topics over the course of a 20-minute

dialog, creating an interactive and

collaborative record of the day’s discussions.

There also will be a session called “Seven Steps to Resilience: ERM for Insurers,” led by David Ingram, executive vice president at Willis Re, who chairs the International Actuarial Association’s Enterprise and Financial Risk Committee, and also speaks and writes frequently about enterprise risk management.

Spotlight to Shine on Innovation Award Winner

The 2013 conference will also feature a new wrinkle, with the presentation of the Technology Innovation Award by IASA and Ward Group. The award honors companies demonstrating the most innovative use of technology at an insurance company.

“This year, we are doing something we have never done before,” Freyermuth says. “Rather than naming the winner at the IASA conference in June, we will instead announce the finalists in June, with the final selection to be made at the EDGE Conference.”

The selection process will also be different than in prior years. “Each finalist will be given the opportunity to present their

submission, and all the attendees will be judges,” Freyermuth explains. “We are very excited about that change. We feel it gives some well-deserved exposure to people and companies who spent time on innovative projects, and it allows attendees to gain insight into those projects that they then might be able to apply in their own organizations.”

The EDGE Conference will close with a presentation about the future of insurance, delivered by Dr. John Sviokla and Jamie Yoder of Diamond Advisory Services, that should make sticking around worthwhile, says Freyermuth. “It will be a thought-provoking session with two people who have a depth of industry knowledge.”

Helping Finance Officers See the FutureHeavy Hitters to Discuss Hot-Button Industry Issuesat CFO RoundtableBy Dave Lenckus

What issues related to economics, reserving, analytics, government

regulation and healthcare should CFOs be paying particular attention to and why? To hear the experts identify and discuss the hottest industry issues and how they might impact your job and your organization, check out Tuesday’s Chief Financial Officer Roundtable.

The roundtable is destined to give CFOs plenty of “food for thought,” says Celeska Fredianelli, who chairs the IASA committee that is producing the session. By session’s end, CFOs should have a much better handle on where their organization stands. They also should leave with at least several actionable ideas to apply within their own organizations, says Fredianelli, vice president, financial planning and analysis, at QBE North America in Southfield, Mich.

During the session’s first segment, James E. Glassman, managing director of JPMorgan Chase & Co. and head economist at Chase Commercial Banking, will provide an in-depth economic outlook. “That’s a pretty heavy hitter in the industry,” Fredianelli notes. “We’re excited about having him. He’s a dynamic speaker, very knowledgeable and highly recommended.”

Fredianelli says she expects Glassman to touch on consumer spending, energy technology and healthcare, among other factors that likely will shape the economy in the years ahead.

Joining Glassman at the

table as moderator will be Brent Jones, CFO of the Texas Property & Casualty Insurance Guaranty Association.

The program’s hour-long second segment, “The Art of

Reserve Risk Management,” will examine that topic — including what to look for during a merger or acquisition — from the perspectives of an actuary, a claims consultant and a CFO. The scheduled panelists are Blake Berman, an assistant

vice President at Guy Carpenter & Co. LLC; Mike Murdock, a senior insurance consultant with the Nolan Co.; and Harold Meloche, CFO and treasurer at Conifer Holdings Inc. Brian Fisher, a managing director at Guy Carpenter, is set to moderate the discussion.

Then comes the luncheon segment, during which Craig Bedell from the Business Analytics Software Group at IBM Corp. is scheduled to examine how some insurers are wisely using analytics.

After lunch, the next roundtable segment will examine the regulatory environment. Fredianelli says panelists are likely to discuss, among other things, the new Federal Insurance Office and the International Financial Reporting Standards that have been adopted elsewhere in the world and are pending adoption in the United States.

At press time, the confirmed panelists were Scott Kipper, Nevada’s insurance commissioner; William P. White, the District of Columbia’s insurance commissioner; and insurer executive John

Svoboda, chief compliance officer at QBE North America. Jean Adams, a principal in Johnson Lambert LLP’s regulatory practice, is scheduled to moderate that segment of the roundtable.

After their discussion, the roundtable wraps with a town-

hall-type discussion devoted to healthcare. “There are just so many issues out there that people need to be aware of, with all of the pending changes in healthcare” set to take effect in 2014, Fredianelli notes, explaining the focus of this segment of the roundtable. “We’re anticipating a lively discussion and a lot of questions.”

Scheduled panelists include Thomas Hampton, a senior advisor

During the session’s first segment, James

E. Glassman, managing director of JPMorgan

Chase & Co., will provide an in-depth economic outlook.

During 2012-2013, 22 IASA chapters provided insurance education and networking opportunities through almost 40 meetings and events involving more than 3,800 attendees. This resulted in thousands of hours of continuing education and countless networking opportunities, along with opportunities for personal and professional growth.

IASA chapters lean heavily on the leadership, dedication and passion for service of close to 200 volunteers across the country. From among those ranks, the IASA Chapter Advisory Committee this year recognizes 14 chapter volunteers who have been selected by their peers for outstanding contributions to their respective chapters:

Chief information and technology officers (CITOs) know the challenge of working

within an ever-evolving landscape. Tuesday’s CITO Roundtable is built to help them navigate that landscape to make strategic technology choices that not only empower their companies but bolster their own careers.

“Our presenters are all people who have experience in the trenches,” says roundtable coordinator Mary Ellen Freyermuth, director of MIS with the Catholic Mutual Group and an IASA volunteer with the Executive Education Program. “These are all peer-to-peer sessions that share insights based on real examples of how technology is being applied, the lessons they have learned, and how those lessons are shaping future decision-making.”

The roundtable kicks off with, “Beyond Keeping the Lights On: Moving Insurance Technology from Maintainer to Strategic Enabler.” Moderated by Allstate’s Miguel Edwards, the panel of speakers

includes Mike Anselmo, Narragansett Bay Insurance Co., Andy Scurto, ISCS, Sal Albano, Tower Group Insurance, and Daniel Necastro, Allstate.

As insurance IT departments change, the role of the CITO must adapt, too. This session will explore how executives, by changing their tactical, operations-focused mindset, can transform themselves to become true innovators. “We need to acknowledge that, by and large, IT’s role has tended to be more reactive, rather than proactive,” Edwards says. “Being honest with ourselves is the starting point of changing our vision of IT’s role.”

It’s a transformation that panel members have undergone themselves. “Our panel includes executives who have been able to get a seat at the table with their business counterparts and develop a strong business case for IT,” says Edwards.

Closing the GapThe second session of the

morning features author and human resources executive Ann Rhoades, who is expected to address how insurers need to close the generation gap by employing multiple generations in the workplace along with new ideas, and technologies in insurance IT.

“Ann is a dynamic, entertaining speaker who brings a unique perspective on how not just insurance, but all industries are facing challenges in recruiting and retaining young workers,” says session moderator John Dunbar of Atlantic American Corp.

Rhoades is president of human resources consulting company People Ink. Her book, Built on Values, details how companies can create winning environments that allow their employees and their organizations to thrive.

Her session will explore how to best handle aging workers, as well as the systems they maintain and on

which the company currently relies, while simultaneously integrating Gen X and Millenials into the insurance workforce. It will also look at how IT leaders need to prepare for the looming talent shortage, with fewer technology-focused students graduating college and increased demand for new technology within the insurance enterprise.

Channel SurfingFollowing a luncheon program

sponsored by IBM, the roundtable sessions resume with a panel discussion entitled, “Channel Surfing: Evolving Your Distribution Strategies for the Modern Insurance Market.”

“Insurers have many challenges related to distribution that we plan to explore,” says session coordinator Debra Penrod of MMIC Group. “There are legacy distribution models

they need to support and growing demands of both customers and agents for modern channels that they must satisfy. IT needs to support the channel spectrum and be as flexible as possible.”

Unfortunately for budget-constrained IT organizations, creating and maintaining a multi-channel strategy can be both costly and time-consuming. The session will explore how insurers can strike the right balance between innovating and maintaining by driving out inefficiencies in traditional channels, leveraging partnerships with technology-savvy distributors, and capitalizing on self-service and other models that provide consumers and agents both ease of business capabilities untethered accessibility.

The session features presenters who have both experience and perspective on the topic, including

Brian Anderson, editor of Life Insurance Selling, Julie Stafford of MMIC Group, LIMRA’s Sean O’Donnell,

Bruce Winterburn of Vertafore, and Allstate’s Kelly Coomer.

The day’s final session, “Strengthening Your Core: Leave the Consulting to the Consultants,” will examine how insurers can best determine how and when to use consultants, solution providers, or integrators,

and when to choose in-house development for core systems and other development. Session presenters include Bill Freitag of Agile Technologies, SECURA’s Ernie Pearson, Victor Carneiro of CompSource Oklahoma, and CSC’s Ryan Savage.

“Technology executives today are dealing with an amazing escalation in the complexity of problems and the solutions needed to address them,” observes session coordinator Michael Foerst of Midwest Employers Casualty Co. “New and emerging technologies also require more and newer expertise to integrate and implement. However, by their nature, most insurers have more insurance experts than technology experts. The questions arise of not just whether, but when to retain consultants, as well as how to choose and use them. Those are the types of questions we will explore in the final session.”

“These are all peer-to-peer sessions that share insights based on real examples of how technology is being applied, the lessons they have

learned, and how those lessons are shaping future decision-making . “— Mary Ellen Freyermuth, IASA Executive Education Program

Facebook and the IASA’s smartphone conference application, which is back again this year by popular demand.

Tuesday’s question, for example, asks attendees to explain their primary reason for attending the conference, such as networking opportunities, the keynote speakers, the continuing education credits they can earn attending sessions, the exhibitors or the host city. Industry Pulse polling results will be posted prominently at various spots at the conference as well. Like last year, some sessions also will likely incorporate previously collected Industry Pulse polling data. Stillman notes that the roundtable chairs who used poll data last year indicated afterward that “they found it a valuable addition to the discussion.”

members and non-members on Facebook, McEntee notes. IASA’s new Facebook presence, which at press time was expected to become active by June 1, is another move designed to draw non-members to the organization, McEntee says. In addition to the social media channels and email, poll participants can respond via the organization’s website.

During IASA’s annual national conference this week, attendees will be polled daily, from Sunday through Tuesday. Poll results will be available the following morning on social media channels. That is the same schedule followed two years ago, the first year conference members were polled. The polling schedule shifted to Monday through Wednesday last year, but the response rate suffered somewhat, Stillman explains.

The one-question polls will be issued through Twitter,

Finger on the PulsePopular Polling Vehicle Provides Plenty of Insight, Discussion Fodder

D esigned to provide IASA members with insight into their peers’

strategies, the organization’s Industry Pulse poll is beating even stronger this year, say IASA officials overseeing the process.

Recent modifications to the poll should expand input and drive up IASA membership, the officials say. On the heels of the successful introduction of poll data in sessions at last year’s national conference, poll data again will be incorporated in various sessions during this year’s event.

While the

Industry Pulse poll results do not generate scientifically valid measures of membership activity and opinion, that’s not the intention, explains Scott McEntee, the new chair of the Industry Pulse subcommittee of IASA’s publishing group. “The intent of the polls is to get the heartbeat of membership on what is coming at them at any particular time and then kick that back to membership,” explains McEntee, the assistant treasurer at Farmers Mutual Hail Insurance Co. of Iowa. “It’s really information-sharing on how members are wrestling with [an issue] to give you some insight on how you might want to deal with it.”

The more poll responses IASA generates, the more information its members will

have available to consider. To that end, IASA this spring began polling non-members in the industry, too, “in hopes that it will give up more perspective on the questions we’re asking,” notes Tricia Stillman, director, member and volunteer services, at IASA.

IASA officials say they also hope this invitation to non-members encourages them to join the organization. The potential membership boost

to the current 12,000-member roll could be significant, as IASA now is reaching out to about 6,000 non-members, according to Stillman.

It’s not unusual for professionals to maintain ties to IASA without formally joining the

organization, says Victoria Pruitt, a member and former chair of the Industry Pulse subcommittee. For example, some non-members are colleagues of IASA members, and some attend meetings at IASA chapters, which do not require membership in the national organization, says Pruitt, vice president, sales, at industry services vendor KeyMark of Liberty, SC.

The Industry Pulse also is expanding its social networking footprint beyond Linkedin and Twitter by reaching out to

MajescoMastek is a provider of core insurance software products and IT services to over 80 clients in North America. Xuber is an international software house that has been a trusted provider of innovative specialist commercial insurance software for over 30 years. Xuber provides software for insurance specialists, by insurance specialists. The configurability and flexibility of its offering removes constraints and enables business growth via greater integration and global reach. Xuber solutions are currently deployed by 130 brokers and carriers in over 40 countries across the U.S., U.K., mainland Europe and Asia Pacific.

For several years, the IASA has eyed international expansion as part of its strategic vision.

That vision took a step closer to reality over the past year when the association sponsored a dialog in November 2012 with U.K. companies that have a vested interest in learning more about the U.S. market and its standards.

“Because the U.K. represents such a big insurance market and has many companies that are subsidiaries or parents of U.S. companies, it was a natural location to take our first look at international expansion,” explains Joe Pomilia, Executive Director of the IASA International Office.

The IASA saw a particular opportunity in working with U.K. companies that are subsidiaries of U.S.-domiciled insurers. “Those U.K. operations have to provide statutory reporting information

to their U.S. parents. Although parent companies certainly provide training resources, financial people who work for those U.K. insurers still struggle keeping current with updates on statutory accounting and the complex requirements of statutory reporting because there are few industry resources in their local market addressing educational needs,” he adds.

The IASA is able to bring that education to international markets. “We offer a vast network of knowledge experts about U.S. statutory issues and regulations, as well as technology solutions, that we can bring to bear for international insurers with U.S. operations,” Pomilia says. “Also, the IASA is a very inclusive organization, with solution providers, insurance carriers, agents and brokers, and regulators among our members.”

International expansion also makes sense organizationally for the IASA. “Our reasons for looking to international markets get to the heart of why anybody expands globally. It adds stability to the organization and provides a hedge against changing market conditions in one geographic region. It also allows knowledge experts to ‘cross pollinate’ and expand exponentially the opportunities we have to bring expertise to our constituents,” Pomilia explains.

Although the IASA’s outreach is still in the information-gathering phase, Pomilia expects the pace of activity to increase in 2013 and beyond.

“Once we get a feel for the size of the market and the companies likely to benefit, we’ll begin a series of activities to respond to the educational needs of financial professionals at those companies,”

“We offer a vast network of knowledge experts

about U .S . statutory issues and regulations, as well as technology solutions,

he explains. “From there, we will continue to look for ways to bring people together to share information, best practices, and expertise that can be used by individual companies and to build on our own continually expanding knowledge base.”
