Dennis Brothers Equine Civil War MonumentRidge Park Cemetery........................................................... 660-886-3324This equestrian monument, erected as a symbol of the struggle of the war which divided the Dennis Brothers in their youth, symbolizes the war service of Austin and Davis Dennis. It was sculpted by the famous Italian Bartholli at Barre, Vermont, and was set in place in the summer of 1901. “Parted in life only by individual thinking and opinions, the brothers are united through the ages by a common tomb.”

Marshall resident Russell “Penny” Nicholas, purchased surplus airplanes and parts after World War I. An airfield was built, though the planes shared space with grazing livestock. A new plane, the Barling NB-3, was manufactured in Marshall in 1929, and the Marshall Flying School came into existence. The school was one of the largest and most successful flying schools in the country. It attracted students from all over the world. Today, airplanes are on display along with other memorabilia. Marshall’s HistorySixty-five acres of land for the city of Marshall was donated by Jeremiah O’Dell, deeded on April 13, 1839. It was named for the United States Supreme Court Chief Justice, John Marshall, when chosen for the county seat. After the first two courthouses in Marshall were lost to fires, the Saline County Courthouse was constructed in January 1882. It was later placed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is an enduring landmark in the center of the Marshall Square and a legacy of nineteenth century architecture.
Saline County was named for its many salt deposits where westward travelers along the Santa Fe Trail stocked up before their long journeys southwest. To commemorate these travelers, Marshall holds Santa Fe Trail Days the second weekend in September each year. The square comes alive with craft people, music, food of all kinds and so much more!
Jim the Wonder Dog
One of Marshall’s most cherished citizens was the extraordinary “Jim the Wonder Dog.” Jim was a Llewellyn Setter from a line of Champion field dogs. Jim was a champion hunting dog but his notariety came from other talents. He carried out instructions given to him in Morse Code, foreign languages and could discern colors and numbers. Newspaper and magazine writers came to witness Jim and were stunned. His fame spread across the United States and he has been featured on the television shows Ripley’s Believe It or Not, Animal Planet and the Discovery Channel. Jim is the only dog buried in Ridge Park Cemetery.
A statue of Jim was placed in the Jim the Wonder Dog Park off the northwest corner of the Marshall Square, along with many of the stories and accounts of Jim’s talents. You can learn more about Jim and other Saline County history by visiting the Saline County History Museum next door to the park.

Day TripsWhether you choose a day trip, an overnight or a weekend stay, you will enjoy Marshall’s hospitality, sites and history. Marshall is also a convenient hub for visiting area attractions and events. The Missouri State Fair is just 30 minutes south in Sedalia in mid-August each year. Arrow Rock is a treasure trove of fascinating history and is just 25 minutes from downtown. Blackwater has gone through many changes in its history and now is a charming stop for antiques and refreshment. Just north and west of Marshall are many orchards in Waverly and Brunswick and the surrounding area. Waverly is also home to the Baltimore Bend Vinyard and Winery.
The Marshall area boasts some of the richest farmland in the world. Saline County has more miles of riverfront on the Missouri River than any other county in Missouri. These and many other aspects of the area make it a beautiful spot for scenic drives.
Whatever style of travel you choose, Marshall welcomes you to enjoy all we have to offer.

Nicholas BeazleyAviation Museum
The year was 1924 and the invention of the airplane was only twenty-years old when Russell B. (Penny) Nicholas and Howard Beazley formed the Nicholas-Beazley Airplane Company. In March 1925, the Marshall Flying School was established and became the largest civilian flight school in the world. In 1927, the Nicholas-Beazley Airplane Company was the largest distributor of airplane parts in the U.S.
Individuals and groups are welcome at the museum. School field trips are encouraged. Arrangements can be made by contacting the museum in advance. A qualified docent will be made available for guided tours. Come enjoy the interactive exhibits, videotaped personal recollections, restored planes, memorabilia and more.
