Unitarian Meeting House 900 University Bay Dr. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The original single-level building, constructed in 1951, was of native limestone, copper, wood and glass. A large 2008 addition, by The Kabala Washatko Architects, reflects a contemporary expression of Wright’s idea of Organic Architecture, with extensive use of mass timber glulams. Tour is limited to 30 people. Weekday tours are held twice daily at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Cost to visit this location is $7 per person. Festival Food Store 810 Washington Ave. Built by WholeTrees Structures using white ash trees, being removed from city parks, and local red pine “wing” trusses tested at the Forest Products Lab. Whole Trees staff will be presenting “Why Trees are Stronger than Wood” at the main conference on Sunday. Roald Gundersen will lead a tour at 10 am, otherwise Festival Foods is open from 5 am to midnight. Custom Timber Frames 2614 Seiferth Rd. Since its opening in 1910, the FPL has provided scientific research on wood, wood products and their commercial uses in partnership with academia, industry, tribal, state, local and other government agencies. Most of the locations are within walking distance of the Edgewater Hotel, where the conference will be taking place. The tour will begin at 9:00 am and those who are interested are invited to meet in the lobby of the hotel to pick up a map and general instructions. Roald has also offered to be a tour guide for anyone who might like a guided tour. Meet up at the Memorial Union and Terrace at 5:30 for a drink and a brat (information on back)! Host-Jablonski Residence 30 Lansing Street Lou Host- Jablonski of Design Coalition has invited Guild members to visit his 1,150 sq ft timber frame/ straw clay single family home, set in a working-class post-WWII neighborhood. Started in 2001, it is built of minimum-resource light framing with heavy-timber structural elements, and low-density light straw-clay with natural plasters, plus numerous other passive solar and low-toxin features. Lou will be presenting, “Non-Petroleum Insulation System for Cold Climate Construction” at the main conference on Saturday. Lou invites you to stop by anytime between 10 and 12:30 on Friday.

Monona Terrace 1 John Nolen Dr.Frank Lloyd Wright designed Monona Terrace,which spans ninety feet out over shimmering waters, incorporating thoroughly modern technology and amenities with the architect’s signature organic design. $5 admission fee.

Wisconsin State Capitol Building 2 E. Main St.Completed in 1917, the building is the tallest in Madison, a distinction that has been preserved by legislation that prohibits buildings taller than the columns surrounding the dome (187 feet). It was constructed of 43 types of stone from six countries and eight states. The exterior stone is Bethel white granite from Vermont, making the exterior dome the largest granite dome in the world.

Terrace at Memorial Union 800 Langdon StThe Memorial Union and Terrace is a historic student center and popular outdoor gathering space overlooking Lake Mendota. It has gained a reputation as one of the most beautiful student centers, and a great place to drink a craft beer, eat a brat, and people watch. You are invited to meet there at 5:30, following the tour.
