Under 18 PolicyWe accept applications from students over the age of 17.

Both parents of an under-18 student are asked to sign a Consent Letter when accepting the offer – to waive the university’s liability for the student

Minor students cannot sign any documents in Germany – a parent or a guardian needs to be present in Leipzig for at least for the first 2-weeks after arrival - and later upon necessity (i.e. hospital stay)

For some nationalities, under-18 students must find a guardian residing in Germany before applying for a student visa. Please check requirements of the German Mission in your country.

A guardian may be any German citizen or permanent resident (relative, family friend, etc.) over the age of 18 years old.

Visa processlast but not least...

Student visa

EU citizens and citizens of Australia, Canada, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, Korea and USA do not need a visa to study in Germany.

Students from other countries will need to apply for a student visa from the respective German mission in their country (or nearest location) before traveling.

Visa processing can take up to 3 months – apply early!

A list of missions on https://www.lancasterleipzig.de/visa-process

Visa application overview1. Check the website of your nearest consulate for detailed instructions

2. Book a visa appointment onlineDo not delay - in some countries the appointments need to be booked several months in advance!

3. Prepare the required documents and submit them at the time of appointment

4. You will receive an entry visa (valid 3 months) – upon arrival apply for student residence permit with the local authorities.

Most common documents: offer letter from the University, evidence of sufficient financial means, health insurance, academic and language qualifications, motivation letter

Financial evidence (International)

Students will be expected to demonstrate funds of 10,236 EUR for one year (covering living costs).

Most international students use a blocked account to fund their studies in Germany. The money they transfer to a blocked account cannot be accessed until they enter the country.

Many students choose to use a Fintiba/Xpatrio/Coracle, a private provider who allows you to set up both your health insurance and blocked account from your home country.

* Coracle allows purchase of German health care at the same time!

Working in Germany

Working on a student visa: 120 days full-time (40 hours/week) or 240 days part-time (20 hours/week). Working must not affect studies.

Finding un-qualified jobs (unrelated to the field of study) without speaking advanced German might be challenging but is not impossible.

The University‘s Career Support Service aids students in obtaining work. In Year 2, theuniversity will assist studnets in identifying appropriate internship opportunities related to the course of study.

Upon graduation, all international students are eligible to apply for an 18-month post-studywork and residence permit.
