NAPLAN 2017

You will have recently received your child’s National

Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN)

These were administered to Grade 3 and 5 students in May.

NAPLAN results provide information for students, teachers,

parents and principals, which can be used to improve student

achievement. Our school has performed well against

national and state results. More importantly, we have seen an

improvement at a school level. There have been increases

from the previous year in the medium and high growth

categories in numeracy, reading, spelling and writing.

As mentioned in the 2017 information for parents and carers

pamphlet that was sent home in May, “NAPLAN tests are one

aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process; they

do not replace the extensive ongoing assessments made by

teachers about each student’s performance.” NAPLAN

provides a snapshot of how the student is performing at the

time of the test.

For more information about NAPLAN please visit the VCAA

Digital Learning Team

Available from the Uniform Shop from week 4 next term - further

information is being sent out to Grades 4 and 5 this week.

This week is eSmart week. eSmart is a framework that is part of the Alannah and Madeline Foundation. It is designed to support schools to ensure they promote smart, safe and responsible use of technology. Brighton Primary received its accreditation in 2016 and continues to promote eSmart.

This week many students have participated in a buddy class activity. They had the option to do either a tech scavenger hunt or digital tattoo design, to learn that most of what you do online stays there forever.

Grade 6 students had a visit from Moorabin Proactive Police to talk about cybersafety.

Some teachers also conducted some in-class reading and viewing activities to support students.

There are many great resources out there to help parents stay up-to-date when it comes to supporting their kids.

Father’s Day Stall

I hope all the Dad’s out there had a wonderful Father’s Day on Sunday.

I especially hope they liked the lovely presents that the children brought home

from the Father’s Day Stall.

I would like to thank Lucy Calder, Kylie Stewart and all of the other amazing

volunteers who worked so hard to make our Dad’s day extra special.

School Disco – 13th October

The annual school disco will be held on Friday 13th October. This is always a fun

event that the children love. There is a theme each year, so stay tuned to find out

what that is.

The disco takes part in two sessions:

Preps – Grade 2 4.30pm – 5.45pm

Grade 3 – 6 6.30pm – 7.45pm

We will also be asking for your assistance and hope that you can volunteer an hour of your time during

either of these events. Only parents with WWC who have volunteered to be on duty will be allowed into

the disco.

Have a great week,

Tash

Exhibition 2017 Last week our gym transformed into our Grade 6 Exhibition. All Primary Years Program schools hold an annual Exhibition. The purpose is for students to share their learning with the community.

This year the students inquired in the theme ‘Who We Are’ with a specific focus on inclusion. The central idea was ‘Inclusion enriches and challenges humanity’. During the week the whole school community, including other schools, visit the Exhibition.

Students were passionate about a wide range of topics. These included equal rights for women, refugees, LGBTI and indigenous issues. Students followed the inquiry process. They selected their area of interest, created questions, researched and took authentic action.

The Exhibition is an excellent opportunity to showcase and celebrate learning.

We are so proud of the commitment, enthusiasm and curiosity our students showed. Thank you to the Grade 6 teaching team and other staff in the school who were mentors. It was a very successful Exhibi-tion.

Exhibition is like writing a story, the further you get into it the more it comes together. – Grace H.

New knowledge doesn't come from books or websites, it comes from the journey you take. – Diana G.

During exhibition, some of us did fret. But in the long run, we did not regret. I won't take anything back, and there's nothing that I lack. – Uma N.

Exhibition is like snakes and ladders, you never know when you are going to go back to the start, or get closer to finishing. – Larissa L.
