The Main Sanctuary is located in along the Isuzu River, deep in a 13,600 acre-forest full of ancient cedar and cypress trees. A feeling of holiness surrounds the solemn atmosphere as one strolls the pebblestone approach to the Main Sanctuary. The architectural style of the Main Sanctuary is known as Yuiitsu Shinmeizukuri or the“Unique Deity” construction. Ujibashi Bridge 宇治橋 G7 The Uji Bridge is made of unpainted hinokis, keyakis, Japanese Cypress. It is the gateway to Naiku and its sactuary Ujibashi bridge also has been rebuilt every twenty years same as other affiliated shrines in accordance with Jingu tradition. Geku Toyo'ukedaijingu外宮(豊受大神宮) D4 Geku or the Toyo'ukedaijingu is dedicated to Toyoukeno Omikami, Kami(Deity) of Agriculture and Industry. She is also the guardian of Amaterasu Omikami’ s food offerings. Located in a deep forest of ancient trees, Geku is said to date from 478 AD. Profile of Ise City The City of Ise is located at the center of Japan, in the southern part of Mie Prefecture. It has a population of 127,000 and the land of 208 square kilometers, one-fourth of which is a forest owned by Ise Jingu, providing the City of Ise with treasure of natural environment. Today, more than 8 million people visit Ise city annually. As the hub city of the Ise-Shima region, Ise city plays a leading role in the education, culture, welfare, and industry. Blessed with outstanding natural beauty, the Ise-Shima region has been designated as a national park. Jingu Chokokan Museum 神宮徴古館 G3 This museum was built in the Renaissance style and houses an excellent collection of treasures from the Ise Jingu, paintings and historical artifacts. Jingu Art Museum 神宮美術館 G3 This art museum exhibits the treasures which were removed during the renewal of the Ise Jingu. It also has permanent collections of art and craft by distinguished Japanese artists. Jingu Agricultural Museum 神宮農業館 G3 The museum exhibits the treasures of agriculture, forestry and fishery. Closed:Thursdays, following days of holidays, Dec.29-31 Miyuki Road 御幸道路 F3 Miyuki Road runs from Geku to Naiku via Kuratayama Hill. Stone lanterns erected by devout donors throughout the country line both sides of the road marking the approach to the venerated Shrines. Segidera Temple 世義寺 E4 This is a famous temple of the Shingon sect of Buddhism founded in the 8th century. A spectacular event is held on the annual day of Goma. A ritual of holy fires lit to pray for well being and good harvests is held on July 7th. Kawasaki Wholesale District 河崎問屋街 E2 Rows of merchant homes in the Tsumairizukuri style line the Seta River giving a glimpse of the period when the district was called“the kitchen of Ise.”The town flourished as water transport provided efficient distribution to the numerous wharves and warehouses along the river. Ise Kawasaki Shoninkan 伊勢河崎商人館 E2 This 1,000 square meter site includes two old style merchant houses and seven warehouses. Three of the warehouses were converted into shops selling antiques, craftworks, etc. Kawasaki Machinami Museum exhibits various color prints, old utensils, traditional handicrafts. There are also two beautiful Japanese gardens, a western style guestroom, and a tea ceremony room. Hours:9:30A.M. to 5:00P.M. daily. Closed:Tuesdays, following days of holidays. Magatama Pond 勾玉池 D4 Magatama Pond lies within the magnificent Geku grounds and was named after ancient Japanese curved jewel beads, magatama, because of its unusual shape. Irises offer a spectacular sight during early summer. Sengukan Museum せんぐう館 D4 Every 20 years, dating back to before 700 AD, the entire shrines of Naiku, Geku and their auxiliary sanctuaries are rebuilt as part of a series of ceremonies called Shikinen Sengu. The Sengu Museum highlights the history and process of this incredible Jingu tradition. Asamadakekongoshoji Temple 金剛證寺  H6 This temple of the Rinzai sect, located on Mt.Asama, guards the“demon’ s gate,” the abominable north- eastern quarter of Naiku. In the temple’ s Maniden which was declared an important cultural asset, stands for Kokuzo Bosatsu, a Buddhist statue enshrined by Kobo- Daishi. Iseshima Skyline toll Road伊勢志摩スカイライン  H6 This spectacular 16 km toll road stretches from Naiku toToba via Mt. Asama offering panoramic views of the Ise Bay area. The retrospective mailing post standing near the mountain top of Asama Mountain is called "The Post in the sky" and it is popular as a photographic spot where you can take photos as if it's standing in the sky. Isuzu River 五十鈴川 G6 / Isuzu Park 五十鈴公園 H6 The river flows through the sanctuary of Naiku. In accordance with Shinto traditions, the hands and mouth are symbolically purified with the water of the river before paying respects to the Shrines. The area along the Isuzu River near Naiku is known as Isuzu Park. There are a pond, paths for walking, a gymnasium, and grounds for track and field events run by Mie prefecture. Oharai Machi Street おはらい町 / Okage Yokocho おかげ横丁 G6 This is known as the gateway to Naiku. Rows of houses in the“Tsumairizukuri ”style line the street retaining much of its old character. One can find a multitude of tiny souvenir shops offering everything from traditional wooden toys to the famous rice cakes. The heart of Oharai Machi is Okage Yokocho, a replica of a typical Edo and early Meiji Era Japanese town, has an example of European style architecture, a Haiku Poet Museum, Hanga(wood cut print), a gallery and so on. Furuichi 古市 G4 / Ise Furuichi Sangu-Kaido Shiryokan 伊勢 古市参宮街道資料館 F5   Located in along the old approach road from Geku to Naiku, Furuichi was one of the five licensed red-light districts before the Meiji Era. Pilgrims crowded the narrow streets seeking pleasures after visiting the Shrines. It was also famous for its Kabuki theaters.There are also two well known temples, Jakushoji Temple and Dairinji Temple. This museum exhibits historical materials relating to this area. Hours:9:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. daily, Closed:Mondays.(free of charge) Sarutahiko Shrine 猿田彦神社 G5 The Kami(God) enshrined here is Sarutahiko Okami who was the guide for the heavenly Gods when they descended onto Earth. Thus, Sarutahiko Okami has come to be revered as the deity of the earth, traffic, places of dwelling and the driving away of evil spirits. Ito Shoha Art Museum 伊藤小坡美術館 G5 This art museum mainly collects the works of Ito Shoha who was a daughter of Sarutahiko Jinja’ s priest. She painted medieval court ladies using watercolors. Kuratayama Park 倉田山公園 G3 Several schools, museums and the Kogakkan University are located within the park on Kuratayama Hill, the center of Ise’ s education. Because of frequent floods, Matsui Magoemon, leader of the village, sacrificed himself as a“hitobashira”, literally“human pillar”,during the Meiji Era. The river bank where he was buried alive has never been destroyed since. Miya River 宮川 A4 From ancient times, pilgrims purified themselves in the river before entering the sacred land to worship Jingu Shrines. Although the Miya River was traditionally the main gateway to Ise, it was not until the Meiji Era that a bridge was built. Previously ferries were employed to shuttle passengers across the river at two major crossings. Ozaki Gakudo Memorial Hall 尾崎咢堂記念館 A4 Gakudo was the pen name of Ozaki Yukio, a well-known liberal politician who was hailed as a political hero after World War Ⅱ . He was elected 25 times to the House of representatives since he had ran from Ise in the first Diet session of 1890. During his tenure of mayor of Tokyo, he donated 3,000 cherry-tree seedlings to Washington D.C. in 1912. Hours:8:30 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. daily. Meotoiwa (Wedded-Rocks) 夫婦岩 二見 Meotoiwa is a site of great symbolic importance in Futami. The sunrise viewed behind the rocks of Meotoiwa is particularly famous. Between May and August, the sun rises between the rocks, creating a so powerful scene in its magnificence as to be overwhelming for some. Futami Okitama Shrine 二見興玉神社 二見 This shrine celebrates Sarutahiko Okami, legendary as the Festival God. It is believed to be beneficial to marriage, The happiness of wedded couples, safety in traffic, and for exorcism. The front of the shrine faces Meotoiwa and a beautiful ocean horizon. And photos can be taken with them. A variety of attractions are presented through out the day. Mt. Otonashi 音無山 二見 At Otonashiyama Park you can really enjoy forest walking and breathing fresh air. In the spring, cherry trees are in full bloom and following the azalea’ s of many different colors blossom. It is also very famous for viewing the first sun-rise on the first day of the year. Taikouji Temple 太江寺 二見 Wisterias in May and Hydrangeas in June cover the whole temples garden. The main statue,“Thousand Handed Kannon”in this temple is classified as a major national cultural asset. It is possible to use here as a youth hostel at reasonable prices. Futamiura Swimming Beach 二見浦海水浴場 二見 The first swimming beach opened in 1882 and has been selected as one of 100 famous beaches in Japan. Along the beach, there is a row of pine trees. This scenery has inspired many waka poems to be written by visiting poets. A feeling of holiness surrounds the solemn atmosphere as one strolls the pebblestone approach to the Main Sanctuary. The architectural style of the Main Sanctuary is known as Yuiitsu Shinmeizukuri or the“Unique Deity”construction.

Ujibashi Bridge 宇治橋 G7The Uji Bridge is made of unpainted hinokis, keyakis, Japanese Cypress. It is the gateway to Naiku and its sactuary Ujibashi bridge also has been rebuilt every twenty years same as other affiliated shrines in accordance with Jingu tradition.

Geku(Toyo'ukedaijingu) 外宮(豊受大神宮) D4Geku or the Toyo'ukedaijingu is dedicated to Toyoukeno Omikami, Kami(Deity) of Agriculture and Industry. She is also the guardian of Amaterasu Omikami’s food offerings. Located in a deep forest of ancient trees, Geku is said to date from 478 AD.

Jingu Chokokan Museum 神宮徴古館 G3This museum was built in the Renaissance style and houses an excellent collection of treasures from the Ise Jingu, paintings and historical artifacts.

Jingu Art Museum 神宮美術館 G3This art museum exhibits the treasures which were removed during the renewal of the Ise Jingu. It also has permanent collections of art and craft by distinguished Japanese artists.

Jingu Agricultural Museum 神宮農業館 G3The museum exhibits the treasures of agriculture, forestry and fishery. Miyuki Road 御幸道路 F3Miyuki Road runs from Geku to Naiku via Kuratayama Hill. Stone lanterns erected by devout donors throughout the country line both sides of the road marking the approach to the venerated Shrines.

Segidera Temple世義寺 E4This is a famous temple of the Shingon sect of Buddhism founded in the 8th century. A spectacular event is held on the annual day of Goma. A ritual of holy fires lit to pray for well being and good harvests is held on July 7th.

Kawasaki Wholesale District 河崎問屋街 E2Rows of merchant homes in the Tsumairizukuri style line the Seta River giving a glimpse of the period when the district was called “the kitchen of Ise.” The town flourished as water transport provided efficient distribution to the numerous wharves and warehouses along the river.

Ise Kawasaki Shoninkan 伊勢河崎商人館 E2This 1,000 square meter site includes two old style merchant houses and seven warehouses. Three of the warehouses were converted into shops selling antiques, craftworks, etc. Kawasaki Machinami Museum exhibits various color prints, old utensils, traditional handicrafts. There are also two beautiful Japanese gardens, a western style guestroom, and a tea ceremony room. Hours:9:30A.M. to 5:00P.M. daily.  Closed:Tuesdays, following days of holidays.

Magatama Pond勾玉池 D4Magatama Pond lies within the magnificent Geku grounds and was named after ancient Japanese curved jewel beads, magatama, because of its unusual shape. Irises offer a spectacular sight during early summer.

Sengukan Museumせんぐう館 D4Every 20 years, dating back to before 700 AD, the entire shrines of Naiku, Geku and their auxiliary sanctuaries are rebuilt as part of a series of ceremonies called Shikinen Sengu. The Sengu Museum highlights the history and process of this incredible Jingu tradition.

Asamadakekongoshoji Temple金剛證寺 H6This temple of the Rinzai sect, located on Mt.Asama, guards the“demon’s gate,”the abominable north-eastern quarter of Naiku. In the temple’s Maniden which was declared an important cultural asset, stands for Kokuzo Bosatsu, a Buddhist statue enshrined by Kobo-Daishi.

Iseshima Skyline(toll Road)伊勢志摩スカイライン H6This spectacular 16 km toll road stretches from Naiku toToba via Mt. Asama offering panoramic views of the Ise Bay area.

The retrospective mailing post standing near the mountain top of Asama Mountain is called "The Post in the sky" and it is popular as a photographic spot where you can take photos as if it's standing in the sky.

Isuzu River 五十鈴川 G6 / Isuzu Park 五十鈴公園 H6The river flows through the sanctuary of Naiku. In accordance with Shinto traditions, the hands and mouth are symbolically purified with the water of the river before paying respects to the Shrines.The area along the Isuzu River near Naiku is known as Isuzu Park. There are a pond, paths for walking, a gymnasium, and grounds for track and field events run by Mie prefecture.

Oharai Machi Street おはらい町 / Okage Yokocho おかげ横丁 G6This is known as the gateway to Naiku. Rows of houses in the“Tsumairizukuri”style line the street retaining much of its old character. One can find a multitude of tiny souvenir shops offering everything from traditional wooden toys to the famous rice cakes. The heart of Oharai Machi is Okage Yokocho, a replica of a typical Edo and early Meiji Era Japanese town, has an example of European style architecture, a Haiku Poet Museum, Hanga(wood cut print), a gallery and so on.

Furuichi 古市 G4/ Ise Furuichi Sangu-Kaido Shiryokan伊勢古市参宮街道資料館 F5 Located in along the old approach road from Geku to Naiku, Furuichi was one of the five licensed red-light districts before the Meiji Era. Pilgrims crowded the narrow streets seeking pleasures after visiting the Shrines. It was also famous for its Kabuki theaters. There are also two well known temples, Jakushoji Temple and Dairinji Temple. This museum exhibits historical materials relating to this area. Hours:9:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. daily, Closed:Mondays.(free of charge)

Sarutahiko Shrine 猿田彦神社 G5The Kami(God) enshrined here is Sarutahiko Okami who was the guide for the heavenly Gods when they descended onto Earth. Thus, Sarutahiko Okami has come to be revered as the deity of the earth, traffic, places of dwelling and the driving away of evil spirits.

Ito Shoha Art Museum 伊藤小坡美術館 G5This art museum mainly collects the works of Ito Shoha who was a daughter of Sarutahiko Jinja’s priest. She painted medieval court ladies using watercolors. Hours:9:30 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. daily. Closed:Mondays,following days of holidays.

Miyagawa Embankment 宮川堤 A3The banks of the Miya River have been famous for cherry blossoms. Because of frequent floods, Matsui Magoemon, leader of the village, sacrificed himself as a“hitobashira”, literally“human pillar”,during the Meiji Era. The river bank where he was buried alive has never been destroyed since.

Miya River 宮川 A4From ancient times, pilgrims purified themselves in the river before entering the sacred land to worship Jingu Shrines. Although the Miya River was traditionally the main gateway to Ise, it was not until the Meiji Era that a bridge was built. Previously ferries were employed to shuttle passengers across the river at two major crossings.

Ozaki Gakudo Memorial Hall尾崎咢堂記念館 A4Gakudo was the pen name of Ozaki Yukio, a well-known liberal politician who was hailed as a political hero after World War Ⅱ . He was elected 25 times to the House of representatives since he had ran from Ise in the first Diet session of 1890.During his tenure of mayor of Tokyo, he donated 3,000 cherry-tree seedlings to Washington D.C. in 1912. Hinjitsukan Museum賓日館 二見This very important cultural asset was built as a lodging and rest area in the 20th year of the Meiji Era(1887). Many in the Imperial Family stayed here. Hours:9:00A.M. to 5:00P.M. daily,entry until 4:30PM. o'clock. Closed:Tuesdays, following days of holidays.

Meotoiwa (Wedded-Rocks) 夫婦岩 二見Meotoiwa is a site of great symbolic importance in Futami.The sunrise viewed behind the rocks of Meotoiwa is particularly famous. Between May and August, the sun rises between the rocks, creating a so powerful scene in its magnificence as to be overwhelming for some.

Futami Okitama Shrine 二見興玉神社 二見This shrine celebrates Sarutahiko Okami, legendary as the Festival God. It is believed to be beneficial to marriage, The happiness of wedded couples, safety in traffic, and for exorcism. The front of the shrine faces Meotoiwa and a beautiful ocean horizon.

Ise Sea Paradise 伊勢シーパラダイス 二見Ise Sea Paradise is an aquarium where has large sea creatures such as funny-face making southern elephant seals and sea horses which you can see and touch. And photos can be taken with them. A variety of attractions are presented through out the day.

Mt. Otonashi 音無山 二見At Otonashiyama Park you can really enjoy forest walking and breathing fresh air. In the spring, cherry trees are in full bloom and following the azalea’s of many different colors blossom. It is also very famous for viewing the first sun-rise on the first day of the year.

Taikouji Temple太江寺 二見Wisterias in May and Hydrangeas in June cover the whole temples garden.The main statue,“Thousand Handed Kannon”in this temple is classified as a major national cultural asset. It is possible to use here as a youth hostel at reasonable prices.

Futamiura Swimming Beach 二見浦海水浴場 二見The first swimming beach opened in 1882 and has been selected as one of 100 famous beaches in Japan. Along the beach, there is a row of pine trees. This scenery has inspired many waka poems to be written by visiting poets.
