Dear Fifth Grade Students, Howdy Hoosiers! Are you ready to learn more about your states rich history that helped shape the Crossroads of America? In this project, you will learn about Indiana from the first settlers, fun facts you might now have known about your home state, and how Indiana grew into the place we all call home today. You will learn about fun and educational activities you and your family can do together in all four seasons, focus on the unique plants and animals that inhabit our home too. Welcome to the Hoosier State! Indiana became a state December 11, 1816 and it was the 19 th state to become part of the United States of America. Our state motto is the Crossroads of America and the significance in waterways, railroads, and highways is recognized as one of the states most important features to keep our wonderful state up and thriving! The name Indiana was given to the state as Indians were the first settlers in our state; so the name means land of the Indians. Our flag represents the thirteen colonies, Indiana as the 19 th state, and the burning torch for the future. Michigan borders us to the north, Ohio to the east, Kentucky to the south, and Illinois to the west. Indianapolis is our states capitol and Fort Wayne (our home) is Indianas second largest city! Though we may be the smallest state west of the Appalachian Mountains (except Hawaii), we hold great pride with our exceptional schools, highly ranked sports teams, hometown feel, and some of the best elephant ears in the Midwest. Our state tree is the Tulip Tree, or also known as the Yellow Popular, state bird is the strikingly beautiful cardinal, and state flower is the gorgeous peony. Indiana has four distinct seasons: a whimsical winter, sweet spring, sizzling summer, and family-time fall. We are known for our Hoosier-like hospitality, sugar cream pie, Indy 500, tons of festivals, and summers spent at the lake. Who wouldnt want to call Indiana home?

What time is it? Its summer time! There are TONS of fun activities to do on your sizzling summer break: o Summers up at the lake o Water sports o Bonfires o Zoo trips o Sporting events (Fort Wayne Tincaps) o BBQs o Camping o Fishing o Recreational Activities o TONS of festivals o Indiana State Fair o Pie Eating Contests o Picnics o Dates at the park o Swim o Fireworks Who wouldnt want to come visit our fabulous state? We are home of the sugar cream pie, the Indianapolis Colts, elephant ears, and tons of lakes for water activities, and much more. Our home offers some genuine welcoming attitudes, exceptional schools, home-cooked meals, and tons of festivals that will keep your history alive. How about that time for hoodies and crisp air? You got it! Its family-time fall season! Fifth Grade Students of Miss Kyriss Class Shambaugh Elementary School 555 Leo Road Fort Wayne, Indiana 46825 Greetings my lovely students! Did you know Indiana has some amazingly beautiful animals that call Indiana their home just like you and I do? I had the opportunity to travel around some of Indianas known National and State forests that house these fine animals? Unfortunately, over the years, due to pollution, changes in our weather climate, deforestation (one of our spelling words this week ), and extinction has caused our native animals to either become extinct or travel up north to southern Michigan to make that their new home. Fortunately for us here in Fort Wayne, we are less than an hour away from Michigan, we can head on up to visit our once native inhabitants. A few animals such as elk, the black bear, black rat, gray wolf, and prairie chicken have settled elsewhere besides the Hoosier state. However, a ton have stayed behind for you and me to visit and research! Some of these animals include: bison, mountain lion (funny how we do not have mountains here, ha-ha ), porcupine, river otter, and plentiful amounts of fish, lynx, and the red wolf. All of these animals are so important to our ecosystem and to some of our tummies during dinner time. How amazing is our state to house so many unique and useful animals? Fifth Grade Students of Miss Kyriss Class Shambaugh Elementary School 555 Leo Road Fort Wayne, Indiana 46825 Hello to all of my wonderful pupils! I hope everyone is enjoying their peaceful Spring Break with tons of rest and nice weather with some sunshine! I certainly enjoy taking my fur-baby out for a nice walk every day now that the snow has melted away. Along my walk at Matea Nature Park, I took note at how beautiful the blooming flowers and plants are (until Dixi decided to mark her territory, ha-ha ). Once spring has sprung, life begins and all our states natural colors begin to flourish. This walk got me to thinking, we need to take a field trip here just to soak in how amazing nature is and we need to stop and smell the roses-literally! I took pictures of some of the flowers and want to share them with you next week. The peonies have bloomed-and we know this is our state flower! Some others I noted were: asters (all colors), peonies, elderberry, spicebush, silky dogwood, red maple, switch grass, tulip popular (our state tree!), butternut, and wild weed. A fieldtrip is in order for every one of you to breathe in our fresh air and appreciate just how magnificent our plants and flowers really are.
