Housesteads is the most complete Roman fort in Britain. It was begun almost 1,900 years ago as a fortress on the frontier of the Roman Empire today known as Hadrian’s Wall, a designated World Heritage Site. Set where Hadrian’s Wall climbs to the top of a dramatic escarpment, the fort provides stunning, panoramic views.

The fort buildings and finds from them give a real insight into life on the Roman frontier. The museum explores the Roman history of Housesteads and showcases some of its stunning finds.

Housesteads follows a text-book template, used throughout the Empire but adapted to local conditions. Panels around the fort illustrate the buildings and some of the changes that took place over the three hundred years of the fort’s occupation.
