Who is responsible for your health?

• My health is my responsibility– Heredity and environment have an impact but I

have the most control over my well being in the decisions that I make

– Health Education—providing health information in such a way to influence people to change attitudes and behaviors and take positive actions towards their health

Page 49: Welcome to Health Class Coach Hair SM North It’s a great day to be an Indian

Quantity vs. Quality of Life

• Quantity is life expectancy –the average # of years a group of people are expected to live (depends on : gender, heredity, environment, culture, access to medical care and basic health habits)– 1900- In U.S. it was 49 years– 2006—77.6 years (U.S.)– Contrast with Ethiopia ---41 years

Page 50: Welcome to Health Class Coach Hair SM North It’s a great day to be an Indian

Quantity of life

• In 1900 leading causes of death were: pneumonia, flu, tuberculosis (TB)—communicable diseases—spread from person to person

• Now leading causes of death: heart disease, cancer, stroke, --(noncommunicable diseases) caused by life-style factors!

• Leading cause of death for 15-24: accidents, murderers, suicide, cancer

Page 51: Welcome to Health Class Coach Hair SM North It’s a great day to be an Indian

Quality of life
