In the early church, the weeks before Easter were a time of preparation for new believers who were to be baptized on Easter morning. Lent is a time of making changes, changes that cause us to pause and consider; changes that both honor tradition and take us to new places; changes that will open our souls to God’s work of salvation. Although Lent has a somber tone, Lent is also a time of celebration. For above all, Lent reminds us that God continues to claim and love us even in the midst of our rebellions. Ultimately, Lent is a season of affirming God love and grace!

The time - the time must be near! Look around O Lord. Look at the pain, suffering, fear and evil that is overtaking us, your people. Surely, you willnot wait long. Surely, you will come soon and destroy the wicked ones.

Surely you will bring me victory, for I am one of yours. In fact, if you don’tcome quickly O Lord, I will take action myself - in your name of course. Iwill judge, I will sentence and I will destroy. And yet, that is not my call, is itLord? Forgive me O God. Forgive me for seeking to judge when I shouldseek to understand. Forgive me for harsh words and hateful anger. Forgiveme for letting my frustration deny your sacrificial love. Forgive me anddeepen my trust in your saving power, that I may become an agent of yourKingdom, meeting hate with love and anger with peace as you did on thecross not long ago . . . . . . .

Lent 2016 - “Called From the Ashes”

The Ashes of Lent represent our acknowledgment that we have built many wallsseparating us from God and from each other. But Lent also acknowledges that Godcalls us from the ashes and empowers us to move beyond those walls of separationinto the Kingdom of God. This season we will seek to discover how we are “CalledFrom the Ashes.”
