A whole night dedicated to Europe. A collective urban experience lasting 27 hours in squares, theatres, villas, shops and lots of sport to celebrate the designation of Florence as

2012 European City of Sport.

Public debate in Palazzo Vecchio with administrators, representatives of the cultural, business, media and university world on the programme of the creative European Union for the cinema,

audiovisual and cultural sectors.

Painting, sculpture, photography, installations and videos on design for a week. Back again in Florence the International

Design Festival, organized by the Cultural Association Immaginae, now at its 3rd edition. This year’s theme is Connecting

time! Connecting time!

We have freed important spots from traffic and handed them back to locals and visitors alike: Piazza Duomo, Piazza Pitti, Via Tornabuoni. With more than 6 hectares of new pedestrianized zones, we are becoming a model for a city that is at once beautiful, sustainable and liveable. You can cross the historic centre in fifteen minutes: walking is good for you and, looking up, enjoy the surrounding beauty at the same time. The Firenze Card was introduced in 2011, allowing you to visit 50 museums at leisure, avoiding the queues and having to make reservations, as well as unlimited use of the buses. We have provided a wonderful new home to Maggio Musicale Fiorentino by opening the new Opera House. 2012 is the year of Amerigo, a chance not only to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of Vespucci, but more importantly to think about the journey of a man who, leaving Florence, sailed the ocean and understood that the Indies or New Spain offered something different, a new continent; and it was to this continent that he gave his name. We have inaugurated a new exhibition area in the Palazzo Vecchio museum with a new section called “Traces of Florence” to offer the public an engaging overview of the art and history of our city with permanent and temporary exhibitions. May in Florence is the month of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Festival, focusing this year on the theme of journey of emotions from Mittleuropa to South America. Ninety events and premieres will put Florence in the spotlight of the international cultural calendar for 5 weeks. May is also the month of Europe: let’s define the situation of the State of the Union with national and European leaders and let’s enjoy the Blue Night in the squares.
