•What tutor group will I be in? Either F I Z or H. The four Fitzharrys houses are: F – Pegasus, I – Griffin, Z – Dragon, H – Phoenix
• How do the tutor groups get sorted out? These are decided by Mrs Beedles-Clark, Head of KS3, following conversations with you and your teachers. This will ensure you are placed in a tutor group that is right for you, and also that we have right balance in each house – for example do not want all the musicians in one house and all sporty in another – it needs to be as even as possible.
•Will I be with my friends? When organising the tutor groups, we try to put you together with some of your friends from your primary school but this is not always possible. Don’t worry though, you will make lots of new friends in no time. It is good to meet new people. You will see your friends all the time in different classes, assemblies, and of course, break and lunch times daily.
•What clubs and trips can I go on? Lots of clubs, activities and opportunities in all subject areas, too many to mention here! There are Sports trips, Science, Music, Drama, Maths, English – there will be something for everyone. More details can be found on our school website.
What are the timings of the school day?
• Arrive at 8.30 • Fitz Focus (tutor time) 8.40-8.50
• Lesson 1 - 8.50-9.50
• Lesson 2 - 9.50-10.50 • BREAK - 10.50-11.10
• Lesson 3 - 11.10-12.10
• Lesson 4 - 12.10-13.10, • LUNCH - 13.10-14.00
• Fitz Focus (tutor time) - 14.00-14.15
• Lesson 5 - 14.15-15.15• End of school day 15.15 On Wednesdays, there is no tutor time in the afternoon so after lunch we move straight to lesson 5 (14.00-15.00). School closes at 15.00 for most students, unless they have a mentoring session (15.00-15.15pm).
You will find out more about this in September from your tutor.
Is there a school show? In our main whole-school musical production – Year 7 students often play starring roles. There is also our annual talent show ‘Stars’ each summer. What is your talent?
What do I do if I get lost? We have all been there, do not worry! Ask for help – there are always lots of people around – we are always very happy to help.
Where do I go when I arrive for my first day and Induction Day? You will be guided to the main hall –enter through the main reception – lots of smiling faces will be there to greet you.
How many teachers will I have? Lots of teachers, usually one for each subject. Some teachers will teach you in more than one subject area.
What subjects will I learn? English, Maths, Science, PE, Technology, Music, Drama, Art, Geography, History, PSHE, French. There are also lots of additional clubs and wider learning days.
• How many people will be in my class?
Approximately 25-30, but class sizes will differ from subject to subject.
• How do I know what lessons I have?
You will be given your own timetable outlining your lessons, teachers and where to go – this will remain the same for the whole year. We have a two week timetable (Week 1 and Week 2). Don’t panic – it will make sense when you get here and it is easy when you know how!
More FAQs
• What is your anti-bullying policy?
Respect each other at all times – we are a caring community. Please report your worries straight away – it’s good to talk. Our anti-bullying policy can be found on our school website.
• How will I know where the classrooms are?
You will have a map and be shown around the school via Year 8 ‘Buddies’ and tutors
• How much homework will I get?
Not much to start with, but then roughly 2 or 3 pieces a day
How many lessons will I have a day?
5 different lessons in different classrooms
• Can I ride my bike to school?
Of course! We have bike sheds for you to lock it up.
• What can I do for lunch?
We have a canteen to buy food, or you can bring your own. You and your friends can sit in the canteen or the hall, or in the various seating areas outdoors around the school site. There are lots of places to choose from! There are also lunchtime clubs on offer (see the website for details) and the library is also open if you want somewhere quiet to work or read.
