I am happy to welcome you to English II CP. This course is designed to connue your development as academically suc- cessful readers and writers and is based on South Carolina College and Career Ready standards. Students will read selecons from a variety of genres, write essays, review grammar skills, and learn vocabulary. The textbook for this course is Collec- ons, Grade 10. Students may access the online text with a teacher-provided login at www.my.hrw.com. Grading is based on a standard 10-pt. Note to Parents scale; quarterly averages will be calcu- lated based on major grades and minor grades. Selected major assessments, including a research paper, will be re- quired for mastery. Students who fail these mastery assignments (below 60%) will be assigned to aend tutoring for remediaon and retesng to earn a maximum grade of 60. Supplies needed for this class include a 1” three-ringed binder with loose-leaf paper and dividers; pens and pencils, 3x5 index cards. Earbuds are helpful for iPad use. SC ELA Standard 13 states that students will “read inde-pendently and comprehend a variety of texts for the pur-poses of reading for enjoyment, acquiring new learning, and building stamina.” Research supports the idea that practice improves reading skills, and avid readers score well on standardized tests. Use of iPads in the Classroom

Students are expected to follow the district’s Acceptable Use policy regarding iPads. iPads should be charged and working properly. Follow teacher instructions for in-class use.

Turn off all sound notifications.

Use iPads as assigned by teacher; otherwise, iPads should be in sleep mode.

Do not use camera in class unless specifically instructed for lesson purpose.

Check My Homework regularly for assignments, messages.

Make-up work is the responsibility of the student (see handbook). Mrs. Key’s website will have current assignments and handouts. Until a student has turned in an assignment, the grade book will reflect zeroes for missing work. Late assignments will receive a grade no higher than 80.

Mrs. Key’s Class Rules

Be in assigned seat and ready to begin class when the tardy bell rings. Remain in seat until dismissal bell.

Bring textbooks, notebook, iPad (charged), homework, and writing utensils to class.

Use language that is school-appropriate and respectful.

Listen and participate. SLANT

Show respect for classmates and their property.

Cell phones, iPods must be turned off.

Water is allowed in class; food and oth-er drinks are not.

Rewards

Verbal praise, positive environment, note to parent, success

Consequences

1st offense—warning, after-class conference; 2nd offense—30-minute after-school detention with teacher and email/call to parent;3rd offense—referral to administrator; Note: Some offenses may require immediate referral.

Students receive TWO restroom passes per quarter to be used at their discretion.
