Danger Signs

• Child turns off the monitor or quickly changes the screen when you walk in the room.

• Your child spends a large amount of time on-line especially at night.

• New numbers on phone bill that you do not recognize or is long distant.

Scary Statistics

• 93% of teens12-17 use some type of internet technology (tablets, phones, and laptops)

• 55% of teens say they give little or no thought to what they post on-line

• 50-60 % kids say they have friends or contacts they have not met

• 1 out of 4 parents say they feel overwhelmed by technology

Threats

• Cyberbullying is when a person receives repeated unwanted comments or emails on-line (email, instant messages, etc.) that cause the receiver harm emotionally or fear of physical threat.

• Predators are people who want to cause harm to others physically or emotionally.

• Identity Theft when a person's identity is used without their permission to purchase, leas, or create accounts for illegal use.

Alarming Figures

• About 1/3 of on-line teens (12-17) have been cyberbullied.

• Girls are more likely to be bullied than boys.

Tips for Protection

• Keep computers out of bedrooms• Talk to your child about dangers on-line• Keep vigil over your child’s email, Facebook,

and twitter accounts (repeatedly check their profiles)

• Set rules for being on-line (length of time, sites they can visit, when they can text, how much they can text, and who they can friend).

More Tips

• Do Google searches on your child for web information and images.

• Limit the number of accounts students have on social networks (this could includes Disney's World of Penguin).

Tips for Social Networks• Check your child's page to ensure they do not

have too much personal information posted.• Check the privacy settings and determine how

much of what your child posts can be made public

• Review the friends list with them and ask who each person is and how your child knows them.

• Discuss 3rd Party ads or apps to ensure that too much information is not shared with 3rd party groups.

iPads and E.L. Wright

Brief Facts

• 6th and 7th Graders will receive iPads this year, 8th Graders next year (District Roll Out Plan)

• Students will also be given the Griffin Survivor Cases and a carrying bag to transport their iPads in.

• iPads will be issued and stored in their homeroom classes for the beginning of the year.

Daily Procedures

• Collect iPad from Homeroom

• Turn iPad in at end of day in 6th Period (Homeroom)

• If tardy go to class meeting at that time, then between class exchange you may go and get your iPad. Teachers will give a pass to the next class.

How will we tell them apart?

• Each device will have a label that provides their name, student ID#, Homeroom teacher, and iPad #.

• This label will on the back of the case and on the bag in two places.

• Students will then take a self-picture and set it as the wallpaper and and lock screen for quick reference.

Apps and Downloading Apps

• We have downloaded four apps for students to use (keynote, iMovie, mobile iron, and anyconnect).

• Students will need to create an iTunes account to download free apps that have been approved. (rulers, dictionaries, and other content related apps).

Keynote• This app will allow

students to create presentations for class.

• It will allow students to input graphs, charts, pictures, and videos into the presentation.

• The student can then share it with classmates and teachers.

iMovie

• Students can create movies with pictures, video clips, and music to make presentations for class.

Mobile Iron

• This app is the software used to monitor the devices and prevent students from downloading un-approved apps to the device.

AnyConnect

• Provides a secure network for students to connect with. It works with mobile iron.

Key Discipline Facts

• If students do not have their ID they will not get their iPad for that day. (It cannot be a temporary ID.)

• If students take the device out of the protective case for any reason then teachers will confiscate the iPad.

• If students are seen between classes with the iPad not in the carrying bag for any reason then teachers will confiscate the iPad.

• Apps downloaded that are not approved will result in a discipline consequence.

Other Discipline Issue

• Any apps not on the approved list will not be downloaded due to mobile iron, if it does occur an alert will be sent to ITS Department here and at the District Office notifying us which device has downloaded an unapproved app.

Some Concerns (Common Questions)

• Is there an insurance plan available?• Because the devices stay at school, there is not an

insurance plan available.

• What happens if we do not sign the Expectations Contract?

• Per district policy we will be unable to issue your child a device, however the device is a tool for students to use, they will still obtain the same level of instruction as their classmates.
