Independent Reading from

Re-reading
Reading @ home from books on INDEPENDENT LEVEL
Good Readers…
• Flexible grouping based on instructional level to meet individual needs of students
• Reading strategies taught (such as phonemic awareness, context clues, word structure, comprehension, etc.) and practiced
• Writing incorporated• Teacher assessment• Goal is to produce fluent readers that move
from an instructional level to independent
Tips for Helping your Child READREADGive your child 5-10 seconds…sometimes longer to make an attempt at the unknown word. Instead of telling him or her the word or saying “sound it out”, ask questions or make statements such as:
•“What would make sense here?”
•What do you think that word could be?”
•“Use the picture to help you figure out what it could be.”
•“Go back to the beginning and try that again.”
•“Skip over it and read to the end of the sentence (or paragraph). Now what do you think?”
•“Put in a word that would make sense there.”
•“Look at how that word begins. Get your mouth ready to say the word. Start it out and keep reading.”
•Finally, tell the child the word if he still doesn’t know it.
Tips for Helping your Child UNDERSTANDUNDERSTAND
To build comprehensioncomprehension, ask questions that you don’t know the answers to…
•“What did that story remind you of?
•What was your favorite part? Why?
•Was the character brave? smart? friendly?
•What would you have done in that situation?
•What was the problem? What was the solution?
You can also ask them to retell the story and listen for Beginning, Middle, End
To build FluencyFluency…
•Read it with / to them
•Alternate pages (you read/I read).
•Echo read

Attendance
• Under Texas Education Code 25.094 a student is in violation of the Compulsory Attendance law if the student is absent (unexcused) 3 days or parts of day in a four-week period or 10 days or parts of days in a six-month period. Tardiness and leaving early is considered part of a school day.
• Children can copy notes or make up assignments, but they can never get back what’s most important; the discussions, the questions, the explanations by the teacher, and the thinking that makes learning come alive.
Attendance Procedure
• If your child is absent, you can email Lori Cochrane-Nunes at [email protected] or click on the “Report an Absence” link on our Boals Website.
• A note or email regarding the absence should be sent to Lori Cochrane-Nunes within 3 school days of returning. After 3 school days without a note or doctor’s documentation, the absence(s) will be considered unexcused and automatically coded in the computer system.
• By law, we have to notify you when your child has accumulated a combination of 5 tardies, unexcused absences, or early dismissals (leave early). A letter will be generated by the computer system when your child has missed 5, 8, and 10 combinations of any of the above absences. At 10, our district Truancy Specialist will contact the parent(s).
Frisco ISD Tardy Policy
3 Tardies- Teacher will make a phone call to parents to discuss the tardy policy. 5 Tardies- Letter sent to parents from the office8 Tardies- Letter sent from the office and phone call from Mrs. Beran10 Tardies- Letter sent from the office and parent conference with Mrs. Beran
Next tardy will result in failure to attend school charges being filed against parent.
After 8:00 the student is counted as tardy.
Vacations• We strongly discourage students being absent for the purpose of vacations.
However, if your child is going to be absent due to a vacation, the school board policy now states:1. The parent shall submit a written request, in advance, stating
that the vacation or trip cannot be taken at another time. These absences will be considered unexcused. The vacation form is loaded on our school website and can also be obtained in the front office.
2. Only one such trip or vacation per family, per year, can be requested.
3. No more than five consecutive days of absence shall occur, except in extenuating circumstances as determined by the Superintendent or designee.
4. No such trips shall be taken during the last two weeks of a semester.
5. If a student is going to be absent more than 10 consecutive days, the student will be withdrawn on the 10th day. 6. For further questions about vacations, please contact the assistant principal.
Attendance Questions
• If you have further questions about attendance, please contact the Assistant Principal, Christina Beran. She will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have.
• You may also contact Boals’ Truancy Specialist, Gary Brazil at [email protected]
