Science as an Inquiry

• Inquiry begins with exploring the surrounding as a curious

student through the use of observational skills (applying the

five senses).

• Inquiry encourages students to ask questions, conduct

experiments to find answers and understand key Science

concepts as a result.

What are we assessing?

• Knowledge, understanding and application of

science concepts (e.g. liquid has a definite volume)

• Skills and processes (e.g. classifying)

• Ethics and attitudes (e.g. perseverance)

Format of Assessment

Formative Assessment (FA) Weighted Assessment (WA)

Specific topics or skills that

would eventually be tested in WA

for the particular term

Specific topics or skills

Scores from WA count towards a

student’s overall result in a subject for

the year.

Topical review (MCQ & OE

questions)

Assessment Focus

• Learning of Science is beyond rote memorisation of facts.

• Increased focus in knowledge with understanding and application of facts, concepts and principles to new situations

• Increased emphasis on process skills and critical thinking skills

Example

Question:

After 30 minutes, the noodles turned cold. Explain why.

Key Concept:• Heat travels from a hotter place

to a colder place.• Gain / lose heat

*Application to the context

Answer:Heat from the noodles is lost to the surrounding air.

Gerald places a bowl of hot noodles on the table.

Assessment for Conceptual Understanding

The learning of science does require a certain level of claritythough, in the way concepts are explained, given the context of the question.

Otherwise, we may end up endorsing misconceptions in students or rewarding them for ambiguous responses.

ROLE OF PARENTS IN SCIENCE EDUCATION

Page 21: Welcome to Chua Chu Kang Primary School

Ways to support your children

• Get them to be curious and inquisitive

• Encourage them to do simple experiments at home

• Understand before memorising the concepts

• Help them see that there are real-life examples of Science concepts

Page 22: Welcome to Chua Chu Kang Primary School

22

• Read good science magazines and watch good documentaries

• Bring them on fieldtrips and learning journeys

• KEEP the past year Science textbooks, Science Builder worksheets and practice papers as reference

• Plan a Revision Schedule for all the topics tested in an examination

• Spend more time on the topics they are unsure of
