In November, We Pray for All Souls

At the beginning of this month, we celebrated two great feasts: All

Saints Day, on Friday, November 1st, where we thank God for all the

saints that have entered God’s glory and are praying for us in heaven.

The very next day, November 2nd, and the rest of the month of Novem-

ber, we pray for All Souls in purgatory.

The Church prays for all her faithful children who have departed from

this life, but have not yet attained the joys of heaven. If we die without

being fully prepared to receive the fullness of God’s glory in heaven,

God graciously gives us a process of purification for our souls, called Purgatory. In November, we are reminded to

pray for our loved ones as well as those who have died and have no one to pray for them. In Canada, we also have the

opportunity to remember our armed forces as we celebrate Remembrance Day in November.

To celebrate, honour, and pray for all those who have died, we will have the following opportunities:

Remembrance Day Mass — Monday, November 11th, 9:00 am at St Vincent de Paul church A day for all Canadians to pause, give thanks, and remember the men and women who served and sacrificed for our

country. Community members from both St. Thomas More and St. Vincent de Paul welcome to celebrate together.

St. Thomas More Mass of Remembrance — Tuesday, November 19th at 7:00 pm For those from the St Thomas More community who would like to pray for and remember loved ones who have died

in the last year. If your loved one was buried at St. Thomas More in the last year, you will be contacted with an invita-

tion to attend. All others are invited to come and light a candle for their loved ones, no RSVP necessary.

St. Vincent de Paul Mass of Remembrance — Friday, November 29th at 7:00 pm For those from the St Vincent de Paul community who would like to pray for and remember loved ones who have

died this last year. All are welcome. To have your loved one remembered, please call Elaine Mason (902-434-5972).

Thank You from our Parish Receptionist

Hello everyone,

I hope you all enjoyed the parish mission last week. It was a great way for me to meet more pa-

rishioners at such a wonderful event. I am full of gratitude for everyone who has stopped by my

office to introduce themselves or offer a helping hand since I have joined the team at Christ the

King, especially during the transitioning of the parishes coming together. I know this time has

been a bit chaotic and confusing for many, and your continued patience and understanding are so

helpful. I have an enormous appreciation for all of the volunteers that have stepped in to assist in

all things BIG and SMALL, sometimes at the 11th hour, I applaud your commitment to this com-

munity and willingness to see the growth while continuing on with the journey. Please know how much you are all

appreciated. If we haven’t had a chance to meet yet, I look forward to when that happens.

Hugs & Blessings, Debbie

A Testimony from the Parish Mission

“I attended the Parish Mission last week, and Fr Marc did an awesome job... At

all times I was aware of his Catholicism, his devotion to evangelize. The message

was always simple and profound in its simplicity, with his use of quiet yet pro-

found signs of our faith: adoration, sign of the cross with the baptism font, laying

on of hands, and especially his own witness. He gave me a kind of renewal, a

new appreciation for the little ways we affect those around us.” (Anonymous)

Important Notice to Parishioners on Pre-

Authorized Debit for St. Thomas More: Due to recent changes, the PAR (Pre-Authorized Remit-

tance) account for St. Thomas More Parish experienced

several issues that were out of our control. As you may

larly scheduled. We are still investigating this situation

but it appears that the STM PAR funds for September

and October may have been withdrawn from your ac-

count all at once in late October. We have attempted to

personally contact all who might have been affected, but

if this happened to you we sincerely apologize for this

scheduling error. If there is something we can do to help

you, please let us know by emailing us at

You Are Just What God Intended!

In the Gospel reading, we hear about Zacchaeus, who

climbed a sycamore tree to try to see who Jesus was.

When Jesus came, he looked up and said to him,

“Zacchaeus, hurry and come down; for I must stay at your

house today.” Why would Jesus do this? I believe Jesus is

inviting Zacchaeus into an intimate relationship with Him.

Fr. Greg Boyle, SJ, a man that I admire, says, “You are

exactly what God had in mind when he made you.” I be-

lieve this saying touches on the core of our Christian jour-

ney, which can be broken down into two parts. The first

part can refer to our personal journey. If we are indeed

“exactly what God had in mind when he made us,” then

our personal journey includes removing all that isn’t of

God, discerning our vocation, and realizing who we are in

Christ. Then we can look in the mirror and see that we are

what God had in mind when he made us: children of God.

The second part of our journey is to help others to “know

they are what God intended.” When I was in the hospital,

there was a nurse there who helped me the day before I

was due to go home. I was so tense about going home be-

cause I was worried that something would come up, and I

wouldn’t be able to leave. She saw that I was tense, and

she spent some time talking to me, calming me down, and

then cracking a bunch of really funny jokes. After she

took that time to spend with me, my soul was lifted and I

had hope once again. This reminds me of the Gospel,

where it says Jesus was passing through Jericho. I feel it

was a true act of kindness and generosity for Jesus to stop

his progress to spend time with Zacchaeus. We are called

to stop and spend time with someone in need. Because of

our busy lives, it is easy to have a goal in mind and walk

right past someone in need. I believe that Jesus is telling

us to stop and look for anyone who might need our care.

God bless you, Deacon Dan

Introducing the Christ the King Pastoral Council

Darlene Bonang was raised Catholic, but drifted away from the Church in her late teens. She had a profound

experience at a Stations of the Cross play in young adulthood, which led her on a journey to seek her faith

again. Her career was in graphic design, marketing, and promotions. She got involved with religious education

when her two children were school-aged and later worked as an administrator for Saint Benedict Parish in Hali-

fax. She and her husband live on the Eastern Shore, and she’s excited to serve as our Director of Community.

Chris O'Hara grew up in Dartmouth, NS and has been a part of many different Catholic Youth Ministry and

Young Adult programs. He is passionate about music, the Toronto Maple Leafs, parish renewal, and his wife

Becca O'Hara. He now works at the Archdiocese of Halifax-Yarmouth in faith formation. He is excited to be a

Diocesan support to the Pastoral Council for the newly formed Christ the King parish.

Kenneth Harrity started his insurance career in 1973 as an independent multi line adjuster. He held various

management positions from Marketing and Quality Assurance to Vice-President Operations Atlantic and Part-

ner of one of Canada’s leading National Insurance Services providers, and after retiring in 2010, incorporated a

company providing Insurance Litigation Consulting. Fully retiring in 2018, Ken is enjoying time with his wife

Barbara grandchildren, family and friends. Actively supporting church, community and neighbors are now his

focus. Ken is Grand Knight, Knights of Columbus Saint Thomas More Council 13987.

Becca O’Hara is an American and grew up running around the woods of northern Minnesota. She was raised

Catholic and fell in love with Jesus more deeply at Franciscan University, where she received a BA in Theol-

ogy and in Catechetics. At the Augustine Institute in Denver, Colorado, she received her MA in Leadership for

the New Evangelization and then worked for FORMED.org. She moved to Halifax in June 2018 and married

her husband Chris in June 2019. Becca now serves as the Director of Formation & Mission at Christ the King.

Kim Ingalls has been a member of the St. Thomas More family since 2011. Kim and Edward have been hap-

pily married for the past 13 years. Together, Kim and Edward have 2 kind and caring girls; Sara (12) and Emily

(8). Kim is a Medical Laboratory Technologist at the QEII Health Sciences Centre, who specializes in Hemato-

pathology. Over the last few years Kim has started to grow in her faith. She has taught Primary, Grade 5, and

First Reconciliation and First Communion, and has helped with Children’s Liturgy, Baptism Prep, and Alpha.

Her girls joyfully sing in the Junior Choir. Kim’s hope for this parish is for everyone to know God loves them.

“And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love.” (John 4:16)

Janet Saunders joined the St. Thomas More community in 1996 after moving to the area with her husband

Kelly. They have two daughters, Rachel and Rebecca. She began volunteering as a Catechist 13 years ago and

has helped prepare dozens of children for the Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Communion. She

works as a digital project manager, also leading organizational change and process improvement. Janet is look-

ing forward to working with the other members of the Christ the King Pastoral Council to help build a stronger

and more vibrant parish. Janet will serve as Secretary for the Pastoral Council.

Bonnie Pilkington has been a member of St. Vincent de Paul Parish since 2011. In 2018 she joined the Liturgy

Ministry as Coordinator for Lectors, a ministry she has participated in since her teen years. She was appointed

to the SVDP Pastoral Council in September 2015 & elected Chair in December 2016, where she has actively

contributed to her faith community while broadening her knowledge of our Church and strengthening her per-

sonal faith. Bonnie is humbled to serve on the inaugural Christ the King Pastoral Council as our parish evolves

and flourishes as a relevant, vital, and vibrant Catholic presence in our community.

Angus MacKenzie is married to Jessie, with two grown children and has been in the Parish since 1983. He is a

member of the Knights of Columbus, and over the years has served on Parish Council, the Liturgy Committee,

trained and scheduled altar servers, helped with the Saturday evening choir and the music for the Friday eve-

ning healing service. He has also worked on ALPHA and the Life in The Spirit seminars, is currently a member

of the Donum Spes prayer group, and volunteers with Chalice.

Sandy Graves describes herself as a wife, wicked stepmonster, nanny, sister, friend, public servant, and most

importantly, daughter of a King! She is married to Doug, and together they have two grown sons, a beautiful

granddaughter, a slobbery Newfoundland dog, and live in Cow Bay. Previously, as a member of St. Vincent de

Paul Church, Sandy served with the St Andrew School of Evangelization, Weekend of Grace for Women, Ora

Women’s Ministry, music ministry with Doug, and more. Sandy serves as Coordinator for Pastoral Council.
