President’s Message Dear Colleagues,

Welcome to Chicago! You are among the 35 million visitors “The City of Big Shoulders” hosts each year. You’ll get to see some of the city during the wonderful events we have planned during your stay, but I hope you’ll use your free time to explore the amazing landmarks and treasures, including our magnificent skyline, a shoreline that boasts

26 miles of public beaches and the legendary Wrigley Field, home to the 2016 World Series Champions Chicago Cubs.

The common denominator that brings us together is our commitment to success—the success of our students, our staffs and our communities. As League for Innovation board members, we share a dedication that, coupled with our passion, will ensure students continue to receive a strong foundation while building knowledge and developing the skills they need to be successful.

I look forward to this gathering as we share our best practices, cultivate new ideas and strive to meet our goals to support the people who are counting on us. I hope you enjoy your stay as much as we enjoy having you here.

Student success a priorityThe Student Success Center has been open only a short time, but it’s already a winner for students. The renovated building is home to the Academic Skills Center, Honors Program, Student Success Department, Testing Services, and Veterans Resource Center, all which have seen increases in participation. The center also houses offices for counseling and academic advising, spacious rooms for new student orientation sessions, a computer lab, and a student lounge.

The center serves students who enter college right out of high school or return for a second career by providing wrap-around services to help them do well in class so they may be more confident, engaged and successful learners.

Exceptional cybersecurity and trainingWith the opening of a renovated Center for Contemporary Technology in 2013, Moraine Valley ushered in the next era of technology instruction at the college. The Virtualization Data Center is a one-of-a-kind cyber lab with nearly 200 servers that affords our students hands-on experience in information technology and information security.

Moraine Valley also is home to the Center for Systems Security and Information Assurance. As the first center of its kind in the Midwest, it offers exceptional information security training as well as provides training for secondary school, community college and university faculty across the region. Thanks to the college’s leadership and involvement, Moraine Valley was selected to be a part of the National Information, Security, and Geospatial Technologies Consortium.

Health, Fitness and Recreation CenterBeing healthy, staying fit and having fun—all sum up perfectly the Health, Fitness and Recreation Center that opened on our campus in March 2014. The center’s membership has grown to nearly 5,000 community members plus thousands more students, and last May had its millionth visit.

A popular place on campus, the center offers cardio machines, a free-weight area, indoor walking path, lap pool and whirlpool, three-court gymnasium, personal training, locker rooms with steam room, private showers, and towel service. The newest addition is KidRec, a 9,000-square-foot space dedicated to youth and family programming and camps that run the gamut from recreational and educational activities to arts and crafts.

Here’s to the Bard of AvonDedicated in summer 2016 to coincide with the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death, the college’s Shakespeare Garden is the only one of its kind in Illinois and one of the only few nationwide. Adorned with flowers and plants mentioned in the Bard of Avon’s works, the garden is adjacent to the Gateway, where the college’s Theater Department has presented outdoor Shakespeare productions for more than a decade.

The garden also has a pathway of personalized engraveable bricks, cast iron benches, bird baths and a sun dial, plus three mastabas placed into a sloped hill where visitors can relax or teachers can hold class.

Observation and experimentation When the Dr. Vernon O. Crawley Science Hall opened in 2009, it increased teaching and learning spaces for the physical and natural sciences by 84 percent. Named after a retired, longtime college president, the facility features smart classrooms; a cadaver lab; and specialized labs for biology, natural science, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, chemistry, physics, and organic chemistry. The building also features a 150-gallon simulated barrier coral reef with hard and soft corals, sponges, anemones, snails, brittle stars, crabs, shrimp, clown fish, and more, plus a tank containing a biological filter with mangrove plants and algae, which simulates the natural cleaning process in a wetland.

The animal lab is a favorite stopping point for many campus visitors as they always are excited about seeing the residents, which include pythons, a giant African millipede, a salamander habitat, tortoises, rats, mice, birds, turtles, and fish.

An essential resourceOne of the busiest places on campus is the Library with just about 15,000 weekly visitors during the peak of the semester. In addition to the exemplary amenities students find at community college libraries throughout the nation, Moraine Valley’s Library goes the extra mile for its patrons by offering a variety of items to check out, including anatomy models, textbooks, GoPro cameras, and much more.

Students also are encouraged to talk while in the Library, especially in the newly created group work spaces. In 2015, the Library’s main floor expanded by roughly 3,200 square feet to make room for a new multimedia lab with computers and media equipment, and group study rooms.
