Goal of Course

• Students will learn how to apply scientific reasoning to everyday principals of Chemistry. You will employ safe and effective use of laboratory techniques.

• We will complete a variety of lab in class. In order to do this, notes will be assigned as homework. All powerpoints will be posted onto school website miaminorlandshs.org

Materials

• In order to be successful in this class, you have to start off on the right foot.

• You will need to have two (2) composition notebooks. They not be spiral

• A scientific calculator (will use after Christmas Break)

• Black/Blue ink pens & pencils

• Colored pencils/marker (I will provide some)

• Folder

• Science Fees are $6. In order to participate in labs, Students MUST pay lab fee

Grading Criteria

Category Percent (%) of grade Explanation

Exam and Quizzes 30 Chapter exams (about every 3-4 weeks) and quizzes (open notes)

Labs 40 Labs will be conducted at least once every 2 weeks. Each is worth two grades (pre-lab and post-lab). The conclusion must be submitted online on a word document.

Classwork and Homework

20 Assignments that enhance understanding and comprehension of scientific practice and theories

Student Accountability

10 Describes activities that occur in class. This includes maintaining your notes in your notebooks and active participation

Grading Scale: A = 100-90% B = 89-80% C = 79-70% D = 69-60% F = 59% and below

Class Expectations

• Respect everyone in class

• No hoodies/hat or headphones on during class

• No talking while I am talking

• Group work still needs to be individualized

• No cheating or copying of work

• No eating or drinking in lab area.

Class Rules

• Only one person may go to the bathroom or drink water one at a time. No exceptions.

• No student will be allowed to leave the class during the first 15 minutes and last 15 minutes of class.

• Clean up after yourself.

• If you are tardy, you must bring a pass to be allowed into class.

Consequences

• I have only written two referals last year. I’m really easy going as long as there is respect

• Any playing around in the lab area during a lab will result in your exclusion from class until a parent conference is made. Safety is very important

Lab expectations

• Gather your group and head to your assigned lab desk. Leave your book bags at your seat

• Gather whatever materials you may need from the center lab desk. Place them back here at the end of lab.

• Put on safety googles/glasses

• Always wear aprons when conducting a lab.

• Everyone should bring their notebook/paper to record data/observations

• Discard trash in the trash bin, and wash any glassware with water and hang on drying racks

Lab 1.2 A – Taking Observations

• Purpose: to take observations in several ways. To define and give examples of observations & inferences

• Materials: Tea bag & plastic cup

• Procedures:

• 1. Read step 1 first so that you know what you’ll be asked to do before you begin

• 2. Fill cup about three-fourth full of water

• 3. Place tea bag in the beaker.

• 4. Record AS MANY OBSERVATIONS AS POSSIBLE as instructed below for 10-15 minutes until you are satisfied you’ve recorded everything

Lab 1.2 A – Taking Observations

Observations:

Write what you see BEFORE you place the tea bag in the water (DESCRIBE both the tea bag and the water) and each change you see AFTER putting the bag in the water. Each observation should be WRITTEN in Words and accompanied with a VISUAL particle representation.

Each sheet should have each person’s name on the top right corner, today’s date and LAB 1.2 A –Taking Observations written on it.

After the lab, sit back down and answer the following questions

• 1. What is an observation and what is an inference?

• 2. Is it important that your observations be able to be read and visualized by other people? Why?

• 3. Was it easier to do the word observations or the pictures? Why?

• 4. What are the pros and cons of using the words and the picture for observations?

• 5. Why is it important to take observations before you begin doing anything (as you did for the tea bag and water before you put the bag in the water)?
