6th Grade Math
What will students learn in math this year?* Students will investigate varied concepts, communicate ideas, and practice skills to develop their logical and mathematical reasoning. Areas of study will include operations of integers, fractions, and decimals, solving equations, geometry, ratios, proportions, and basic mathematical properties related to algebra.
How will students be assessed?•Students will have daily homework (Mon-Thurs), quizzes, and
tests What is the philosophy of our math curriculum at Hershey Middle School?* College Preparatory Mathematics (CPM) * Mastery Over Time* Collaboration & Communication
What is communication arts?-Reading, writing, listening & speaking
How many units are studied?- Three units are studied- We are currently working on Unit 1- Each unit has essential questions followed by specific learning goals.
How will students be assessed?-Formative assessments allow for a quick check.-Summative assessments are used to show if students have mastered the skill.
What kind of practices will be used to teach and enhance these skills?
-Short writing pieces and a few longer pieces-An anthology to teach reading goals through
literature -Other short reading pieces -Independent reading is also highly encouraged
Inquiry Based ScienceSystems is the theme of the 6th grade science program…this big idea allows students to see how changing one part affects the whole. Students will be encouraged everyday to step into the shoes ofscientists and DO science!
