What are norms and values?

Norms

Values

Unwritten rules which influence our behaviours and actions. These are learnt actions.

A code of conduct which we live by. These are often linked to our ‘moral conscience’.

Challenge! What is the difference between norms and values?

Our culture is taught to us through agents of socialisation. E.g. Our families

Task: In pairs, discuss what the other agents of socialisation are.

Extension: ‘Social Institutions socialise individuals into a system of norms and values that will guide their future behaviour and thinking’ Do you agree with this statement? Explain your answer
