Welcome to 6th Grade! We will introduce you

to 6th grade and to our classrooms.

If you have any questions during our presentation, please raise your hand.

Home-School Communication

Communication is key to your child’s success in school.

Student Planner-Please initial it each night and send it back to school every day.

Please be sure to check your child’s green “GO” folder each night and send it back every day. This is a great way to send a note to school.

If questions or concerns do arise do not hesitate to contact us via phone or email.

School Attendance Your child’s regular and prompt attendance at school

is crucial to his/her success. Many learning activities are group oriented and involve interaction with classmates. Therefore, it is next to impossible to make up all learning experiences at home. Please view school as a priority, and see to it that your child attends everyday except in cases of illness or emergency.

If your child does have to miss and you would like the work sent home with a sibling or neighbor please call early enough for us to gather the work and get it delivered before dismissal.

During missed recess the children will walk single file around the perimeter of the playground. This way they are still exercising and releasing energy.

Rewards

Classroom Community Our classroom is a community. In our

community, we have rules to help us get along with each other.

Our class rules are: Be respectful and responsible. Raise your hand. Stay in your seat. Keep hands and feet to yourself Do your best! Share.

Reading Series Reading

Macmillan/McGraw-Hill “Treasures” Day 1: Introduce Vocabulary, Story, Writing, Grammar, and Spelling

Pretest Day 2:Review Vocabulary, Read Main Selection, Writing, Grammar,

and Spelling Practice Day 3:Vocabulary, Re-Read Main Selection (Quiz), Fluency, Writing,

Grammar, and Spelling Practice Day 4: Vocabulary Quiz, Read Informational Text, Fluency, Writing,

Grammar, and Spelling Day 5: Review and Assess: PSSA Test and Spelling Test Weekly spelling and vocabulary lists will begin will be sent home every

Friday to practice for the following week.

Math Series Mathematics

Harcourt Math We will begin the year with number sense and

operations in Unit 1. Unit 2: Statistics and Graphing Unit 3: Fraction Concepts and Operations Unit 4: Algebra: Expressions, Equations, and

Patterns Unit 5: Geometry and Plane Figures

Math Series Cont. Unit 6: Measurement Unit 7: Solid figures and measurement Unit 8: Ratio, Proportion Percent, and

Probability Unit 9: Algebra: Integers and Graphing

Grading: The students will…*receive points for homework assignments*quizzes, tests, and math notebook ( 45 pointes per 9 weeks)

Science and Social Studies(Switch)

Miss Nasser will teach Social Studies and Mr. Coyle will teach Science.

Social Studies- We will study ancient civilizations in various regions. (Ex. Ancient Egypt, Ancient China, Ancient Greece, etc.)

Social Studies Grading- Grades will be determined by quizzes, tests, group projects, individual projects, and research papers.

Science and Social Studies(Switch)

Science- The students will study_____. Grading- ____________________.

Homework Math homework will be assigned nightly except for Fridays

(due to exceptions). Homework should be done in their Math notebook.

Reading ________________________. Social Studies will require some research and individual project

completion done outside of class time. Science Vocabulary and Spelling lists will be sent home on Friday for

the following week. Practice reading, spelling, and using the words each night.

All other homework is used to reinforce the skills that were taught in school and will be recorded in the Student Planner.

Assessments Your child will be assessed on the skills taught in

math, reading, science and social studies. Math skills (Math Chapter Tests, Unit Tests, Quizzes,

and Math notebook) Comprehension, Phonics, Vocabulary, Fluency

Vocabulary and Spelling words will be assessed weekly.

As in 5th grade, your child will be given the DRA assessments.

The Student Planner is a great bulletin for posting upcoming assessments.

Lunch Money Lunch money should be sent to

school in the “GO” folder. Please put the money in an

envelope and label it with the student’s name, teacher’s name, LUNCH MONEY, and amount.

Lunch money should be sent to school on Mondays.

Recess Time We will try to get out as much as possible

on nice days. Please dress accordingly to the weather!

We would ask that NO ELECTRONICS (including cell phones) be brought to school! We like to either play outside or in the gym.

Book Orders Your child will be bringing home a form to order

books about once a month. If you wish to order, simply fill out the form and send a check made out to the book company in an envelope. These orders are provided as a convenient way for parents to buy quality books for their child at a low price. As an added bonus, for every dollar that is spent on books, We earn bonus points which are used to purchase books for classroom use. This is a win-win situation because you get quality literature at a low price and you are helping to provide quality literature for the classroom.

Of course, you are never under any obligation to order!

Birthdays Birthdays are special occasions for young

children. If your child wishes, he/she may bring treats for the class on his/her birthday.

Please do not send birthday party invitations to school unless the entire class has been invited. Although it may seem convenient to distribute invitations this way, it can result in hurt feelings for those not invited.

Volunteers If you are able to help out at school it would be

greatly appreciated. Stop by your child’s classroom at the end of this presentation to sign up. Your help is appreciated!

We will be interested in help for special activities like the Science Olympiad, Read Across America, and Christmas Around The World, just to name a few.

If you are unable to help during the day, preparations that can be done at home (i.e. cutting, folding, etc.) will be greatly appreciated.

Expectations of Students and Parents

Take home and go through “GO” folders. Initial student planner nightly. Following and enforcing rules/behavior. Homework completed on time Study, Study, Study! RESPECT FOR ALL!
