The Dual Language ProgramThe Dual Language Program

• To provide students the opportunity to learn a second language

Academic CriteriaAcademic Criteria

In order to be promoted to 3rd grade your child must be able to do the following in Reading:

• The student will be reading on grade level with 90% accuracy. They will show proficiency in phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency.

• The student will be able to read K-2 sight word list.• The student will be able to use graphic organizers.• The student will be able to identify the beginning, middle, and

end of a story.• The student will be able to identify story elements.• The student will be able to spell frequently used words

correctly.• The student will be able to identify nouns, verbs, and

adjectives.

must be able to do the following in Writing:• The student will be able to write a paragraph with 5 complete

sentences.• The student will be able to write a paragraph centered on

one topic with a topic sentence, 3 supporting sentences and a closing sentence.

• The student will be able to use proper punctuation and capitalization when writing sentences.

• The student will practice D’Nealian Handwriting and begin to write in cursive.

• The student will use descriptive language and varied sentence structure.

without regrouping.

• The student will be able to tell time in 30 – minute increments.

• The student will be able to identify place value to thousands.

• The student will be able to count to 1000 by twos, threes, fives, tens, twenty-fives, fifties and hundreds.

• The student will be able to identify a pattern.

• The student will be able to solve number sentences where the missing number is represented by a geometric shape.

Testing PolicyTesting Policy

• The second grade testing policy states: 

– If a student talks during any classroom test, he or she will receive an automatic F and cannot be retested.

– Tests cannot be corrected at home and returned for a higher grade. 

– Any unanswered questions will be counted wrong.– Points will be deducted for not writing a name on the

test.

• Grades will be posted on e-Sembler. grades.lake.k12.fl.us.– You must register to use this site.

• Math grades will consist of chapter tests from the Harcourt Series and Unit Tests created by the county’s math department.

• Reading grades will be given weekly as one grade that is an average of the Storytown Test and a Vocabulary Test. (There will be no grades on weeks we do not have a story.)

• Language Arts grades will also be given weekly as one grade that is an average of the spelling test and a grammar test.

Dual Language Parent Contract Dual Language Parent Contract 1. In the 50-50 Dual Language model, my child will receive

instruction in Spanish and English for equal amounts of time.

2. My child will continue to develop academically, socially, and culturally in his/her second language through the duration of the program.

3. My child will develop bilingual (understanding and speaking) and bi-literate (reading and writing) competencies in the two languages.

4. My child will receive homework in both languages and will be responsible for it. This will help in the development of both languages.

5. My child’s academic performance will be on grade level in both languages in accordance with each grade level curriculum. If his/her performance is below grade level he/she may be placed in a regular education classroom according to his/her academic needs.

6. My child will maintain positive behavior and follow the Lake County Schools Code of Conduct.

7. My child will maintain a consistent attendance record. I will inform the school of his/her absences due to illness or family emergencies.

8. My child will be reassigned to a regular education classroom if participation in the Dual Language Program in no longer an option.

9. I will commit to attend Dual Language Enrichment Program parent meetings, participate in Dual Language programs, and support the teachers of the program.
