CATHOLIC FOUNDATION

OF NORTH GEORGIA GRANT

Last month, Saint Paul of the Cross received a disburse-

ment check of $5,000 from the Parish Assistance Fund at

The Catholic Foundation of North Georgia. These funds

are free from Archdiocesan assessment.

We are most grateful to Archbishop Gregory and

The Catholic Foundation for this unexpected grant.

These funds are being used for the refurbishing of the first floor of the Spiritual Center.

My dear Parishioners,

One thing you have to give Pope Francis credit for is he real-

ly knows how to draw people’s attention; most of the time

by not even uttering a word. A while back, the Vatican an-

nounced that he was preparing an encyclical on the environ-

ment. Almost immediately, comments began to flow, some

from the right, some from the left, as we are wont to identify individuals or organizations in this country. His critics told

him, in effect, to stay inside the sacristy. One individual, a

Catholic ,who recently announced that he is running for the

presidency, cautioned the Pope to leave science to the scien-

tists and to stick with theology and morality. A recent

Ramirez cartoon in the AJC depicts Francis reminding Mo-

ses as he parts the waves of the Red Sea: “And I say it was

caused by GLOBAL WARMING.” But Francis remains

undaunted. The Vatican has announced that the encyclical

will be released to the press on Thursday, July 18th.

I believe that some really powerful anti-climate change peo-

ple, Catholic and otherwise, will pull out their big guns and

commence firing. But, I believe that they are in for a sur-

prise. Not that I am privy to its contents, but from all the

signals he has been sending out over the past two years,

Francis’ encyclical will deliver a message that all the world

simply has to hear and heed. He will repeat what we have heard from both St. John Paul II and Benedict XVI before

him, but in a typically more direct and concrete way. His

message will be above politics and ideology, a moral mes-

sage about the preservation of creation and of the human

person, with heavy emphasis on poverty and its causes.

This past week, the U.S. Bishops held their spring meeting in

St. Louis; among other important issues, Francis’ coming

encyclical was on the agenda. But across the country,

groups of concerned people have been meeting for some

time in anticipation of the encyclical, to discuss and devise

ways of implementing the Pope’s teaching. We, here at St.

Paul of the Cross, will want to be part of the effort. After all,

it is a matter of life and death for us all and for this beautiful

globe we call home. — Fr. Jerome, C.P.

llegar a hacer grandes obras.
