Politics. That political responsibility
may be lived at all levels as a high form
of charity.
The poor in Latin America. That, amid
social inequalities, Latin American
Christians may bear witness to love for
the poor and contribute to a more
fraternal society.
My dear Parishioners,
This weekend we begin a new traffic pattern in our drive-
ways and parking areas even though we have not yet begun
Phase One of our long-awaited development program. As
announced last weekend, we want to get ahead of the game,
so to speak, so that when construction does begin, the new
traffic and parking pattern will be familiar to everyone.
Switching traffic patterns is like everything else in life; it
means change, something we just don’t like to do. Yet,
change is not only possible, it is inevitable. We are con-
stantly confronted with the need to change in small matter as
well as the large. Change does take time because it requires
a bit of adjusting on our part, moving away from the famil-
iar and the comfortable to a new way whatever it may be.
I have just begun to get into the Pope’s encyclical Laudato-
Si’ - On Care for Our Common Home, and already I see that
the Holy Father is challenging us to make some necessary
changes in our lifestyles because, as he reasons, everyone of
us is responsible for keeping our common home in good
order. That’s why the encyclical is addressed to “every per-
son living on this planet” and not just to bishops or even just
to Catholics, but to everyone—the high and the mighty as
well as the little and the lowly.
The Holy Father makes quite a case for a healthy world. At
times he is blunt but on target when he states that we are
caught up in a culture of pollution and waste—”a throwa-
way culture,” as he calls it. But he says encouragingly that,
if we all work together, we can effect a change for the bet-
ter.
We must study, reflect and take action on what Pope Francis
lays out before us because is is really a matter of life and
death for the planet and for all of us who call it our home.
I hope you will find time to read the Holy Father’s encycli-
cal. It is available on the Internet, and I hope to provide at
least some copies for the parish. Meanwhile, let us adapt to
these comparatively small changes that affect our driving
and parking patterns. — Fr. Jerome, C.P.

P. Alberto, C.P.
