Citizenship as a Core Concept in Social Studies- provides learning focus at all grades- prepares students to participate in public engagement- enhances students’ understanding of citizenship- prepares students to be active participants in their communities, locally, nationally and globally

The concept of citizenship must be considered in the context of:

- democracy, human rights and public debate

Students explore citizenship in four areas:- active democratic citizenship in Canada- Canadian citizenship for the future- citizenship in the global context- environmental citizenship

What is social justice? “the notion that society should be organized in a way that allows equal opportunity for all its members” (Cdn. Oxford Dictionary)

- Frequent direct references, and many indirect references, to social justice in the curriculum (front matter and outcomes)

- Social justice is an integral component of Citizenship (core concept) in the context of social studies education in Manitoba
