THIS IS MY BELOVED SON This Sunday’s celebration of the Baptism of the Lord closes the Christmas season. In the scriptures we see one more epiphany, or manifestation, of the Spirit of God in Jesus; but this time it is as an adult, rather than as a child. Jesus’ baptism also serves as the inauguration of his prophetic mission and the messianic age. Today’s reading from Isaiah describes God’s chosen Messiah, upon whom God’s spirit rests. In the Acts of the Apostles Peter says that “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power” (Acts 10:38). Finally, in the proclamation from Matthew’s Gospel Jesus’ baptism in water goes almost unnoticed. The crucial moment comes when the Spirit of God comes upon Jesus and a voice from heaven echoes the words of Isaiah: “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:17).
WHY ARE YOU COMING TO ME? We can almost hear the amazement in John the Baptist’s voice as he says to Jesus, “I need to be baptized by you, and yet you are coming to me?” Throughout the time that John preached and baptized people in the desert, he had been preparing people for the coming of the Messiah. Now, Jesus approaches him for baptism! We might share in his wonder. Why would Jesus, who is sinless, come to John for a baptism of repentance? Jesus’ response to John helps us understand. Jesus has come to fulfill all that is expected in the Messiah, and more. As he entered the waters of baptism, Jesus entered fully into our humanity, raising us toward God. Jesus sanctified the waters of baptism, making them holy, opening the heavens through his humble obedience to God’s plan of love.
CHRIST’S MISSION IS OUR MISSION As Jesus came out of the baptismal waters, the Holy Spirit descended upon him and a voice from the heavens was heard saying, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” In joining himself to humanity, Jesus opened the heavens for us, and in doing so, was confirmed in his mission of mercy and love. In baptism, we are joined with Christ. Immersed into his life and love, his mission is our mission. It is still early in this new year. Today, reflect on your baptismal call to live as a member of Christ’s body. In what ways do you love God and others? In what ways might you grow as a disciple of our Lord Jesus Christ? How are you living the mission of Christ, to make God’s love and mercy known in the world? Is Christ’s mission your mission?

— Mateo 3:17
Baptism and Life “Whoever is moved by love begins to perceive what “life” really is. He begins to perceive the meaning of the word of hope that we encountered in the Baptismal Rite: from faith I await “eternal life” - the true life which, whole and unthreat-ened, in all its fullness, is simply life. Jesus, who said that he had come so that we might have life and have it in its fullness, in abundance (cf. Jn 10:10), has also explained to us what “life” means: “this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent” (Jn 17:3). Life in its true sense is not some-thing we have exclusively in or from ourselves: it is a relationship. And life in its totality is a relationship with him who is the source of life. If we are in relation with him who does not die, who is Life itself and Love itself, then we are in life. Then we ‘live’”. Pope Benedict XVI, Encyclical on Hope, Nov. 30, 2007
Entonces ‘vivimos’”. Papa Benedicto XVI, Encíclica sobre la Esperanza, Noviembre 30, 2007.

FOOD PANTRY CORNER
Enjoy the 2020 Super Bowl
while helping others;
that’s a win!!!!
A warm bowl of soup on a cold (Florida) winter
day… sounds pretty simple. As simple as
turning on the TV and watching the “big
game” (the game is scheduled to be played on
February 2, 2020 at Hard Rock Stadium in
Miami Gardens). However, as accessible as a
can of soup may sound to most, a bowl of soup
or a hot meal can be a challenge for many
people in our local community.
This January the St. Jude Food Pantry will be
collecting cans or boxes of soup/stew. If you
have an extra can or two, drop it off in the “big
soup container” as you enter the foyer of the
church.
God Bless You and THANK YOU for helping
our guests in need.
PILGRIMAGE 2021 We are trying to plan a new trip for 2021, and to have it ready by June 2020. However, we need
