Dynamic new Scottish Charity, Feisty Women, is making waves throughout Scotland and beyond with its determination to accelerate equality, social and economic justice for women and girls. Hear how Feisty Women is challenging the injustice of accelerated pension changes, as well as developing innovative new thinking and inter-generational solutions to tackle enduring discrimination against women of all ages.

Scottish Government Minister for Older People and Equalities, Christina McKelvie MSP, will be the keynote speaker. The Leader of Dundee City Council, John Alexander, will welcome delegates to Dundee to what is going to be a lively and energising event.

REPRODUCTIVE LOSS – CONFRONTING THE TABOO THROUGH SCIENCE FICTION

Dr Anna McFarlane presents a wide-ranging view of reproductive loss (including stillbirth, miscarriage, and infertility) and the inability of women to express and share their pain. She explores how women turn to science fi ction, fantasy, and horror, through literary and cinematic examples, asking whether approaching the topic in new ways might help women to break the silence. BREAKING DOWN BARRIERS FOR WOMEN WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES (WO)

During our drop-in session, we’ll be promoting womens’ health issues and the achievements of women with Learning Disabilities. Women supported by The Wellgate Day Support Service will be involved in a number of presentations and fully interactive activities which will off er a perspective of life as a women with a Learning Disability, showing that women with a Learning disability can make waves.

CAIRD HALL BACKSTAGE TOUR

Come and join us on the tour and see behind the scenes of Dundee’s Major concert and conference venue. Take a look backstage, and view the magnifi cent Harrison & Harrison Organ and the Marryat Hall, named after Emma Grace Marryat, sister to Sir James Caird who gave money to complete the Caird Hall, in the City Square. Without her support the building may never have been completed. She was made a burgess of the city in 1918; only the fourth woman to receive this honour. Her portrait was painted by David Simpson Foggie, and hangs in the Caird Hall foyer.

Can we improve the gender balance in the transport sector? Participants will have the opportunity to make at least two small items for themselves eg a felted brooch or a pin cushion. The ticket price will be donated to women making a business for themselves in India or Africa. These women are making small waves in their communities and by supporting themselves they are improving their lot and helping others to start up in business too. £25 provides the capital for a granny in South Africa to make and sell beaded items or knitting wool and needles for women in India.

IS THERE SPACE FOR ME? (WO)

1–3pm | Dundee Deaf Hub 30 FREE | Children welcome

In our workshop we’ll explore how women feel about their place in their families, community and the wider world. Women can use drawings, mood boards or writing to share these feelings with the other group members and look at the action they could take to build a future where they have space. Children are welcome and they can create their own artwork.

Lino Printing is one of the most popular ways, for many people, to start to learn a printmaking technique. Our one-day class will introduce you to this wonderfully rich and diverse method of image making inspired by women printmakers such as Angie Lewin and Sybil Andrews. Learn how to cut intricate patterns or drawings on traditional lino blocks with specialist tools, and then print the blocks on one of the Print Studio’s rare Victorian presses.

THE WORK THEY SAY IS MINE – WOMEN IN SHETLAND THE CAMERA WIFE, THE SOOND LASS AND THE MAKKIN’

An award-winning drama-documentary celebrating the lives of Shetland women, past and present. Made with an all women crew, it won the Television and Radio Industries Club of Scotland (TRICS) Award in 1987. Shetland women connect us back to a way of life that has been similar for generations, telling the story of the knitters, their skilled and creative work and how they tried to make a living for themselves and their families within an unfair bartering system on the island.

Rarely seen, the screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Rosie Gibson, and curator Liane Cumming,

The project’s aim is to develop and deliver BME community language tours of V&A Dundee for participants who will earn the living wage as freelance tour guides.

DOMESTIC ABUSE: WHOSE ISSUE IS IT?

Domestic abuse aff ects women, children and young people of every race, religion and social status. Join us for this free interactive workshop lead by representatives of Dundee Women’s Aid and Shakti Women’s Aid. We will learn what domestic abuse is, including the issues faced by black and minority ethnic groups, why it happens and how it aff ects our society. We will try to answer the questions that everyone has and have a discussion on how to respond when someone discloses to us and what we can do in order to build a future where domestic abuse does not exist.
