COVID-19 STATEMENT

Purdue Bands & Orchestras is committed to protecting the health and safety of our current and

prospective students during these trying times. We are adhering to all Purdue University

policies regarding the COVID-19 outbreak, and we seek to help flatten the curve by practicing

social distancing. Because of Purdue University’s recent decision to move Summer Transition,

Advising, and Registration (STAR) to an all-virtual experience, we have decided to host an all-

virtual audition process for our concert bands, jazz bands, and orchestras.

Although we will miss meeting each one of you at STAR for in-person auditions, we remain

excited now more than ever before to come together this fall. Our immediate plan is to hold

virtual auditions for our indoor ensembles this summer. As of today, the audition process for

the Purdue “All-American” Marching Band remains unchanged. Additionally, we are diligently

working to provide virtual opportunities to connect with our department. Check

www.purdue.edu/bands for the latest updates.

In light of these challenges, we are still Boilermakers - working together on the persistent

pursuit of the next giant leap. Our wish to you is a healthy spring full of music and community.

We will be together again, and we cannot wait to have you join us in the Purdue Bands &

Orchestras family.

BOILER UP!

Sincerely,

Jay Gephart

What to Prepare

All submissions must be unlisted YouTube links with video. Links via Dropbox or mp4/audio

attachments will not be accepted. Please double check that your link is not set to private

before submitting.

Etudes and scales must be in one video, though it does not need to be one continuous

take. Please do not submit more than one video unless you are auditioning for more than

one ensemble.

as jazz band and concert band, or jazz band and orchestra, please submit 2 separate

orchestra winds, you may submit one video. The audition requirements are the same

and will be viewed by the same instructor.

There will be no sight-reading component to the virtual audition.

Please include the following in the description of your YouTube posting:

o If also auditioning for AAMB, please note this

Tips for a Successful Video Audition

Focus on sound quality of the recording space. We recognize everyone is limited with where

they can record, but try to choose a space in the house that will be conducive, and do a few

audio tests to make sure your sound is clear.

Business casual or Purdue apparel is an acceptable dress code.

Check the lighting in your recording space to be certain you are visible and not obstructed by

shadows or bright light.

What to Prepare

August 16th-22nd, 2020

The entire week of band camp is part of the marching audition process for the Purdue “All-

American” Marching Band (AAMB).

Attend Band Camp instead of Boiler Gold Rush:

The Purdue “All-American” Marching Band provides a similar experience to Boiler Gold Rush

(BGR) during the week of band camp, including presentations from important campus

leaders and departments, tours, activities with your section, and a performance at the Boiler

Gold Rush Pep Rally.

If you intend to audition for AAMB, do not sign-up for BGR. If you sign-up for BGR and then

decide to participate in band camp, you may request a full refund prior to July 31st,

2020. Contact [email protected] or (765) 494-9328 to determine if your

circumstance qualifies for a refund.

Through July 31: Full refund of $320

Aug. 1 and later: No refund

Welcome to Purdue Bands & Orchestras and the AAMB!

We’re glad to see your interest in the “All-American” Marching Band, and we just want to make sure you’re equipped with all the information you need to meet us for Band Camp in August. Please make sure you take care of these steps as soon as possible!

Tell your academic advisor TODAY that you are participating in Marching Band, and that you need to get BAND 11000-001, CRN 46611 on your schedule (3:30-5:20 daily plus the linked Saturday time).

Woodwind/Brass – You will play your music audition when you arrive at Band Camp (see the band camp schedule for exact times), and check out www.purdue.edu/bands for audition repertoire!

Drumline – your audition will be entirely conducted at band camp. If you have not considered attending Drumline Tech Weekend, it is strongly encouraged (though not required). Check www.purduedrumline.com for details (audition cadence posted on July 1).

Golden Silks Color Guard, Goldusters, Twirlers – Your audition is complete! If you have not successfully completed an audition for one of these groups, you will not be able to participate this season, and should be on the lookout for audition information for 2021 later this fall.

Sometime this summer, we will provide a registration form that must be completed IMMEDIATELY.

Check the band website OFTEN, as the most up-to-date band camp regular season schedules will be posted there.

If you have not heard from a student leader in the marching band yet, they may not actually know you’re coming to camp. Email [email protected] if you have not heard from a leader yet (please include your full name and instrument), and we’ll put you in touch with your leadership team.

Please don’t hesitate to contact our office with any questions you may have about Band Camp and the “All-American” Marching Band in general! Your student leaders will be the best points of contact, but we are happy to help you out in any way we can!

GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR PREPARATION – WE LOOK FORWARD TO WELCOMING YOU TO BAND CAMP ON AUGUST 16!!
