Dear parents, guardians

and friends of our school,

During March, the

Greek School of

the Holy Trinity

took part in all

the ecclesiastical

and national

celebrations that

are strongly

associated with

this month.

Firstly, during the beginning of March,

our students took part in the annual

memorial service for Cypriot heroes

Pallikarides-Afksentiou, who tried with

their heroic sacrifice to fight and renounce British

rule of the island, and thus became two of the

most important and youngest martyrs of heroism

and freedom in Cyprus. Our children, with the

presence of some of their teachers, humbly tried to

honor these heroes with a celebration that

occurred in the church of St Luke. They recited

poems, including the famous ‘Tha paro mian

aniforia’, and spoke to the audience about the life

and the sacrifice of the two young men. During

the end of the celebration, a red carnation was

placed by each of the children in front of the

pictures of the heroes. The flowers were kindly

given to the children by our president, Mrs K.

Jordanou.

In addition, during this month, the Greek

School of Ayia Triada had the great pleasure of

welcoming staff from Birmingham’s Children

Hospital, in order to give them a monetary

cheque, handed over by our headmistress, Dr

Stella Tryfonos. The money for the

hospital had been raised over the

last few months by parents and

people of the community who

wished to contribute to the huge and

important work of the hospital. It

was a lovely moment that and the

personal struggle of some parents

and children in our city.

As we all know, this month is a very important

one for Greece and Cyprus as it contains one of

the greatest religious and national events: the

beginning of the Greek War of Indipendance, on

the 25th of March 1821. Thus, the children of our

school attempted to commemorate this event

through a variety of relevant crafts and

assemblies. Through these we aimed to teach and

remind children of this golden leaf of Greek history

and the intense struggle of a nation for Freedom

after 400 years of slavery.

It should be noted, that during the March

assemblies that took place not only in our central

school in Erdington but all around, our main topic

of conversation was of course this revolution of

1821. Through a clear, accurate and interesting

PowerPoint presentation created by Ms Vasilaki,

our kids had the chance not only to hear about

the events of the revolution but also to see with

their own eyes an illustration of the reasons

behind the War, the faces of great heroes and their

clothing, learn about countless battles and sieges,

and examine the National anthem that was

written during that time. We also took a brief look

into the events of The Annunciation of the Virgin

Mary, that is also celebrated on the same day.

We like to believe that this knowledge came in useful when our young students presented and paid homage to the events of the 25th of March 1821 in the form of a school celebration, in the church, on Sunday 24th March. This event saw many children of all ages reciting poems, short plays and singing three traditional songs organized by our talented musician and teacher at the school, Ms Eleftheria Trygousi. The celebration left children, staff and parents feeling happy and reminded us all of the importance of the Greek Revolution, its identity and its love for Freedom and self-respect regardless of nationality and religion.

Lastly, it should be mentioned that during this

month, we also had the pleasure of welcoming,

through Skype, the Cypriot children’s author, Ms Anna

Koupanou, who kindly addressed the children,

answered their questions and had a delightful

conversation with them about her books and writing

in general. The kids were left very happy!

The children make their own kites and

honour Mother’s day!

Year 8, Erdington Saturday have been studying the book “The Weird Story of Sebastian Montefiore” by Anna Kouppanou. When they finished the book and when they had hours of work on this book The children met the author of the book and they had the opportunity to ask questions and have a discussion on the writing of the book, the characters and the author.

Την 1η Απριλίου 1955 οι Ελληνοκύπριοι ξεσηκώθηκαν για να αποτινάξουν τον βρετανικό ζυγό, με στόχο την «Ένωσιν» με τη μητέρα-πατρίδα Ελλάδα. Ο αγώνας τους έληξε με τις «Συμφωνίες Λονδίνου-Ζυρίχης» (19 Φεβρουαρίου 1959), με τις οποίες η Κύπρος ανακηρύχθηκε ανεξάρτητο κράτος.

Το αίτημα των Ελληνοκυπρίων για την αποτίναξη της βρετανικής κατοχής στη Μεγαλόνησο και την ένωση με την Ελλάδα ήρθε δυναμικά στο προσκήνιο το 1950, με το δημοψήφισμα της 15ης Ιανουαρίου (το διοργάνωσε η Εκκλησία της Κύπρου και το 95,7% των ψηφισάντων τάχθηκε υπέρ της ένωσης με την Ελλάδα) και την εκλογή του Μακαρίου Γ' ως Αρχιεπισκόπου Κύπρου στις 20 Οκτωβρίου. Ήταν η εποχή που η αποικιοκρατία έπνεε τα λοίσθια και η μία μετά την άλλη οι κατακτημένες χώρες επιζητούσαν δυναμικά την ανεξαρτησία τους.

Η δράση της Ε.Ο.Κ.Α., που συνεχιζόταν με διαρκώς εντεινόμενο ρυθμό, προκάλεσε την κατάπληξη των δυνάμεων κατοχής και κίνησε τον θαυμασμό των ελευθέρων ανθρώπων όλου του κόσμου. Ο Άγγλος Κυβερνήτης Ρ.Π. Αρμιτέιζ αντέδρασε με την θέσπιση νόμου, στις 15 Ιουλίου 1955, για συλλήψεις και προσωποκρατήσεις χωρίς δίκη και για δημιουργία ειδικών κρατητηρίων.

Τέτοια κρατητήρια έγιναν, αρχικά, στις κεντρικές φυλακές Λευκωσίας, και, λίγο αργότερα, στο μεσαιωνικό κάστρο της Κερύνειας, από όπου έγινε η τολμηρή απόδραση 16 αγωνιστών της Ε.Ο.Κ.Α.

Ύστερα από αυτό το γεγονός, ιδρύθηκαν τα στρατόπεδα συγκέντρωσης ή κρατητήρια στην Κοκκινοτριμιθιά, στην Πύλα, στο Πολέμι, στο Μάμμαρι, στο Πυρόι, στην Λίμνη, στην Αγύρτα και στην Πέργαμο, όπου φυλακίσθηκαν, σε διάφορες περιόδους, περίπου 3.000 Κύπριοι. Οι κρατούμενοι πραγματοποιούσαν εντυπωσιακές εξεγέρσεις και αποδράσεις, ενώ πολλοί θάλαμοι αστυνομικών σταθμών είχαν μεταβληθεί σε χώρους βασανιστηρίων.

Ο Κυβερνήτης, στρατάρχης Τζών Χάρτιγκ καθιέρωσε την θανατική ποινή ακόμα και για περιπτώσεις κατοχής

όπλων ή εκρηκτικών υλών. Μετά τις πρώτες καταδίκες, συγκροτήθηκε μονομελές Δικαστήριο με Αγγλο-δικαστή, που καταδίκαζε αμετάκλητα σε θάνατο τους αγωνιστές, ύστερα από συνοπτικές διαδικασίες.

Οι εκτελέσεις γίνονταν με απαγχονισμό στις Κεντρικές Φυλακές Λευκωσίας. Εκτελέσθηκαν, συνολικά, εννιά νέοι: Στις 10 Μαΐου 1956, οι Μιχαλάκης Καραολής, 22 χρόνων, από το Παλαιχώρι και Αντρέας Δημητρίου, 23 χρόνων, από τον Άγιο Μάμαντα. Στις 9 Αυγούστου 1956, οι Ανδρέας Ζάκος, 24 χρόνων, από την Λεύκα, Χαρίλαος Μιχαήλ, 21 χρόνων, από την Γαληνή και Ιάκωβος Πατάτσος, 22 χρόνων, από την Λευκωσία. Στις 21 Σεπτεμβρίου 1956, οι Αντρέας Παναγίδης, 25 χρόνων, από το Παλαιχώρι, Μιχάλης Κουτσόφτας, 25 χρόνων, από το Παλαιομέτοχο και Στέλιος Μαυρομάτης, 23 χρόνων, από τον Λάρνακα Λαπήθου.

Στις 14 Μαρτίου 1957, ο Ευαγόρας Παλληκαρίδης, 18 χρόνων, από την Τσάδα της Πάφου. Όλοι οι νεαροί αγωνιστές αντιμετώπισαν την αγχόνη με θάρρος και αξιοπρέπεια, συνιστώντας στους δικούς τους να μή λυπούνται. Ο Κουτσόφτας είπε στην μητέρα του: «Ήλθε η ώρα να δείξεις ότι είσαι πραγματική Ελληνίδα». Ο Παναγίδης, σε στενό συγγενή του: «Δεν θα δώ την Κύπρο ελεύθερη, αλλά προσφέρω το αίμα μου για να την δούν οι νέες γενιές».

Όλοι, την ώρα που ο δήμιος τους περνούσε την θηλιά στον λαιμό και τους φορούσε την κουκούλα στο κεφάλι, έψαλλαν τον Εθνικό Ύμνο. Οι ήχοι του πνίγονταν με το άνοιγμα της καταπακτής.

Ο πιο νέος από τους απαγχονισθέντες, ο δεκαοκτάχρονος Ευαγόρας Παλληκαρίδης, αρνήθηκε να υποβάλει την αίτηση χάριτος στον Αγγλο Κυβερνήτη, πράγμα που θα καθυστερούσε και ίσως να ματαίωνε την εκτέλεσή του. Τους συμαθητές του στο Ελληνικό Γυμνάσιο Πάφου αποχαιρέτησε με το τελευταίο του ποίημα, που άρχιζε ως εξής:

Ο Γρηγόρης Πιέρης Αυξεντίου (Λύση Αμμοχώστου, 22 Φεβρουαρίου 1928 - Μονή Μαχαιρά, Λευκωσία, 3 Μαρτίου 1957) ήταν Ελληνοκύπριος αγωνιστής της ΕΟΚΑ, κατά τον Απελευθερωτικό Αγώνα του 1955-59 εναντίον της Αγγλικής κατοχής. Ήταν δεύτερος στην ιεραρχία της οργάνωσης, και σκοτώθηκε από τους Άγγλους σε μάχη που δόθηκε κοντά στην Ιερά Μονή Μαχαιρά. Κατά τη διάρκεια του αγώνα ήταν κυρίως γνωστός με το ψευδώνυμο Ζήδρος, ενώ εκ των υστέρων ονομάστηκε «Σταυραετός του Μαχαιρά».

Μετά θάνατον, τιμήθηκε από την Ελληνική πολιτεία με τον βαθμό του Αντιστράτηγου.

Στην Κύπρο θεωρείται ήρωας, και τιμάται κάθε χρόνο με μνημόσυνο στο Μοναστήρι Μαχαιρά, σε ημερομηνία που πλησιάζει εκείνην του θανάτου του. Τον Οκτώβριο του 2016, o Υπουργός Εθνικής Άμυνας της Ελλάδας Πάνος Καμμένος παραδίδει τιμητικά τον βαθμό του Αντιστράτηγου, στα συγγενικά πρόσωπα του Αυξεντίου.
