March – Mother’s Day

On 22nd

March we celebrate Mothering Sunday or Mother’s Day. On this day

we show love and gratitude to mothers everywhere by giving cards, flowers or

gifts. Children offer acts of kindness to give their mums a bit of a day off.

Mothering Sunday in the UK is always the fourth Sunday in Lent. Traditionally

this was a day when children, mainly girls, who were working in domestic

service were given the day off to visit their mother and family. This probably

came from the tradition that people would visit their ‘mother church’, the main

church in their local area on Mothering Sunday. As they walked along the

country lanes, children would pick wild flowers to take to church or to give to

their mother.

WOODNESBOROUGH OLD

SCHOOL BELL

Appeal on behalf of

Woodnesborough Village Hall Committee

The old School Bell has now come out of storage and restored to its former

glory and now hangs in the New Village Hall.

It was made in a Liverpool Bell Foundry in 1844 and in-between that date and

the present we only have a few snippets of information from its life but if

anybody can add to these it would be most helpful to enable us to record its

life so far - for example how many times was it rung a day?

Notes from St Mary’s

I recently dipped into a well-known online auction site and

bought myself a second-hand macro lens for my camera. I

am very much an amateur with all this, but a macro lens – as I understand it –

enables you to get very close to the subject you are photographing (as little as

just a few centimetres), thus bringing out an astonishing amount of detail.

There are a lot of tricks of the trade I shall need to learn over time, but already

I have been staggered by the detail that it is possible to see. Suddenly the

everyday and mundane takes on a whole new life and I am staggered by the

amount that I have in the past simply missed in the natural world around me. It

has become possible to go round the garden and discover that common

species of plants and animals take on a whole new richness - whether that be

leaves, flowers, buds, lichen or insects.

Now, there are two thoughts which spring to my mind when reflecting on all of

this:

First, it is that we should never cease to stand in wonder and awe at nature all

around us. I suspect many others are like me - simply too busy in our day to

day lives to notice much of the beauty and intricacy that is literally on our door-

step. It is said that time appears to slow when we experience new things - let

us then never stop being inquisitive and excited by the marvel of nature, God’s

spectacular creation. All the evidence seems to suggest that a deeper

engagement with the natural world is good for our well-being - and I am sure

also for our spiritual well-being. As we take in the extraordinary breadth from

the astronomical to the microscopic there is so much that is new for us to

explore and which will enrich us.

And second, I think in all of this there is something of a parable or metaphor for

life. I suspect that so much of what is going on within our own lives - our

attitudes, our motivations, our instincts - remains hidden, even from ourselves,

and escapes any critical analysis. What then if we were to shine a macro lens

onto our own lives and see things more closely and in much sharper detail -

what might it reveal? How might we feel?

Those who have been through counselling might at some level have had such

an experience, perhaps with a degree of discomfort - being encouraged to

have a look at ourselves and the life experiences which have moulded and

shaped us to become the people we are. We perhaps begin to recognise some

of the insecurities which we carry and which we might helpfully acknowledge

and seek to understand. Insecurities which help us appreciate why we respond

as we do when under stress - sometimes in ways which are not healthy - but

when acknowledged can offer us the opportunity to re- evaluate how we react,

for the better.

11

In the Church’s year we have now entered the season of Lent. For Christians,

Lent is a time for the kind of self-examination I have been describing. It offers a

period of seven weeks when we can take a step back and look a little more

closely at ourselves: acknowledging our weaknesses and failings, but using

that insight to reassess our values and priorities. This is often done in

conjunction with study and prayer - tools through which we can allow God to

offer us a new window into ourselves and by which we can become better

people. Our keeping of Lent is often under-girded by a certain discipline -

giving something up (or perhaps taking something on) to help us appreciate

more fully everything we have.

So for the remainder of this season of Lent, leading up to our celebration of

Easter on Sunday 12 April, maybe we can all helpfully find time for a little

introspection to consider how we might better value our world, value our

community and relationships, and above all value ourselves.

Poem of the Month

Silver

Slowly, silently, now the moon Walks the night in her silver shoon; This way, and that, she peers, and sees Silver fruit upon silver trees; One by one the casements catch Her beams beneath the silvery thatch;

Couched in his kennel, like a log, With paws of silver sleeps the dog;

From their shadowy cote the white breasts peep Of doves in silver feathered sleep

A harvest mouse goes scampering by, With silver claws, and silver eye;

And moveless fish in the water gleam, By silver reeds in a silver stream.

Church Breakfast

Saturday 18th

January

Around 30 people representing church and community met for our first

breakfast of the new year. After breakfast, our speaker was Mike Hawthorn

who was representing Mission Aviation Fellowship. MAF is an international

charity with its HQ in Folkestone. It was founded soon after WW2 by Christian

aircrew who had been involved in active combat. He told us about the

wonderful work the charity does flying mercy missions in many poor parts of

the world, often to isolated sites where larger aircraft could not fly. Generous

donations enabled us to present a cheque for £120 + gift aid.

Our final breakfast for this season is on Saturday 21st

March at 9 o’clock in

the Village Hall Atrium when we will have a speaker from Christians Against

Poverty and you are invited to join us.

Woodnesborough Parish Council

The council met on 28th January in the Miller Room at the village

hall and received apologies from District Councillor M J Holloway.

After the minutes of the last meeting were read and signed, actions from the

previous meeting were dealt with. We looked at one planning application

between meetings and no objections were raised. There were 6 planning

decisions, five of which were granted and one refused and there was no

planning correspondence or consultation documents.

Our County Councillor, Sue Chandler, reported on the ongoing problems with

the water leaks on the Thanet Road and how Southern Water are dealing with

the repairs and assured us that they do intend to get the work done in time for

the Open Golf Championship and that the work on repairing the Toll Bridge will

be delayed to ensure that disruption is kept to a minimum.

The Council took part in the recent Village Hall Open Day and some comments

were given to councillors regarding issues such as parking and development.

There was also a suggestion that some people would like to see a local shop

and pub back in the village. While we have taken these comments on board, it

was thought that there is little hope of a shop or pub coming back as both had

closed due to lack of local support.

We have received a request for a memorial bench to be placed near the play

area and we are very happy to agree to this. Chair, Brenda Baker, will liaise

with the family on this. The council were very happy that shading film has now

been put in place but also concerned that there is a wide band of frosted film

completely masking the view from the Atrium windows of the church. The

point of these windows, when the hall was built, was to frame this view and it is

hoped that this will be rectified.

After the discussion regarding finance matters and setting the precept for this

year, we agreed a donation to the churchyard mowing costs.

The next meeting of the council will be on 25th February.

Did you know….?

Mute Swan - Our cover photo this month.

In late March Mute swans start constructing their nests. These big birds lay large eggs, so their nests are huge - about 80cm deep and over 1m wide.

Mute swans are recognisable by their black and red beak with a black knob near the forehead.

A female swan is known as a 'pen' and a male is a 'cob'. They usually mate for life and are thought of as romantic bids because the partners form a perfect love heart with their necks.

Both males and females are involved in parenting; the cob guards the nest while the pen leaves to feed, but he does not incubate the eggs.

Young swans, known as cygnets, are grey. The Ugly Duckling is a well- known story by Hans Christian Andersen about a little bird born in a barnyard who matures into a beautiful swan.

Mute swans are not actually mute, but they make very little noise compared to other swans. They do make various grunting, hoarse whistling, and snorting noises, particularly when communicating with their cygnets.

At nesting time they make a loud hissing sound to warn off anyone, or anything, which comes too near the nest.

The most familiar sound associated with mute swan is the vibrant throbbing of the wings when in flight. This is unique to the species and can be heard from a range of 1 to 2 km (0.6 to 1 mi).

The mute swan is one of the heaviest flying birds. Studies from Great Britain show males to average from about 10.6 to 11.87 kg (23.4 to 26.2 lb).

Mute swans were known for centuries as ‘Birds Royal’ as only the King could keep them. They were often served up roasted in banquets on a very large plate.

The population of Mute Swans in the UK has increased in recent years, probably due to better protection of the species. The problem of lead poisoning on rivers has also largely disappeared through a ban on the sale of lead fishing weights.

Woodnesborough WI

The W I met on Tuesday February 12th in the Atrium of the

Village Hall. Apologies were received from Lucy, Caroline and

Brenda. Our President Liz welcomed a new member, Caroline,

who had become interested in our W I after the Village Hall open day. Rae

mentioned the AGM at the Leas Cliff Hall in Folkestone and outings to

Greenwich, Norfolk and one at Christmas.

Our speaker was Pru Anderton. She was trying out a new subject on us, which

proved to be very entertaining and interesting. Pru, her mother and brother had

had to move to a commune in Bristol after her mum’s divorce and it sounded

like quite an experience. It was during world war 2 and at that time Pru’s

grandparents were in German occupied Jersey. It was a worrying time as

communications were banned in Jersey, the death penalty was for those who

disobeyed and German propaganda was all they heard. Hunger was so

terrible that even the German soldiers ate grass.

After Jersey was liberated, 2 year old Pru received 2 postcards from her

grandmother. Her grandparents returned to England and Pru’s mum didn’t

recognise them as they were so thin and her dad was blind. They settled in

London in a rather affluent flat and were looked after by a treasure called Mrs

Champion. Pru loved her and the delights of the dumb waiter.

On a recent holiday in Jersey an archivist furnished Pru with lots of details

about her grandparents’ life under the Nazi rule, which was realms away from

the wealthy eccentric life of this fascinating couple and their best friend, a Mr

Marsh.

The whole talk was funny, poignant and intriguing. It was backed up with many

photographs and interesting documents.

After the talk we had tea, coffee and biscuits and the raffle. The competition

letter ‘T’ was won by Mrs Rae Martin’s cast iron train.

The meeting closed at 8.45pm

Our speaker for next month is Mike Samson who is a noted artist.

John Whitgift

I heard recently that the grandson of my late cousin is at Whitgift School in South Croydon. Our family passed along the Brighton Road, at the lower end of the school’s grounds, many times as we went between our family home (for forty years) in Coulsdon and our big shops in Croydon.

John Whitgift was Archbishop of Canterbury, 1583 to 1604, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth the first, and she referred to him as her “little man in black.” In Croydon there was an Archbishop’s palace, probably needed for the archbishop to change horses as he travelled from Canterbury to Lambeth Palace in London. The palace buildings were (may be still) used by girls’ school, known as the Old Palace School.

In the middle of Croydon, at the junction of George Street and North End, John Whitgift built almshouses, which carry his initials as “I W”. On the land behind the shops which now line George Street and North End, he built his school. The school moved to its present site in Haling Park South Corydon in 1931. Into the old buildings moved Whitgift Middle School, later called Trinity School, which moved in 1965 to Shirley Hills. On the site is now the Whitgift shopping centre. On the Brighton Road, almost opposite the school grounds, there stood, may be still stands, a pub, the “Swan and Sugarloaf.” This name derives from an old nearby mile post, which had a bishop’s mitre and crook, to represent Croydon. Candlemas Cake

This fruit and nut cake, enriched with honey,

is traditionally made for Candlemas Day on

2nd

February, but can be made and enjoyed at

any time, or the recipe can be saved for next year.

50g / 2oz butter

150g / 5oz clear honey

150g / 5oz demerara sugar

275g / 10 oz flour (either plain or SR)

1 tsp ground mixed spice

1 tsp ground ginger

1 tsp ground cinnamon

1 tsp bicarbonate of soda

Pinch of salt

100g / 4oz chopped mixed candied peel

1 egg

150 ml / 5 FL oz milk

25g /1oz flaked almonds

Method:

Heat the oven at 170 C / 325 F / gas mark 3 and thoroughly grease a 700g /

one and half pound loaf tin.

Heat the butter gently until just melted. Remove from the heat and stir in the

honey and sugar. Leave until lukewarm.

Sift together the flour spices, bicarbonate of soda and salt then stir in the peel.

Beat the eggs and milk together and add to the honey mixture.

Pour into the flour mixture and beat until smooth. Pour into the tin and sprinkle

on the almonds.
