July 2011 WELCOME NEW SENIOR PASTOR REV. ANNE LIPPINCOTT AND HER HUSBAND STEVE BRAUDT From Rev. Anne: I grew up in Iowa as the daughter of a United Methodist pastor and graduated from Atlantic High School. My undergraduate work was completed at Morning- side College in Sioux City where I earned a B.A., majoring in Religious Studies. I attended Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois, and earned a Masters Degree in Christian Education and a Master of Divinity degree. Licensed in 1989 and ordained an elder in 1993, I served two years as Christian Education Director and associate pastor at First UMC in Clinton, five years as pastor of a two point-charge (Winfield & Spring Run), and eight years at Eldora. In 2004, I was invited by Bishop Gregory Palmer to join the appointive cabinet to serve as the Waterloo district superintendent. Since the Iowa conference restructuring in 2007, I have been appointed as the Northeast district superintendent. My calling to serve the Lord as a pastor came at an early age. I enjoy all styles of worship, believe in building relationships with people, and trust that Gods leads us all in the journey of discipleship. I love to sing and play guitar, collect Hallmark ornaments and to travel. (please see page 3 for continued article)

WELCOME REV. ANNE AND STEVE (continued from cover)

A little about Steve: “I grew up in Clinton, Iowa. My par-ents are very active members of First United Methodist Church. My main interests as I grew up in church were youth group and hand bell choir. After Anne and I were married, I went back to school and received a B.A. in Art from Iowa Wesleyan College. I became a licensed pastor and started attending Course of Study classes (seminary equivalency courses). During that time, I served four years as the pastor of Gifford UMC. While Anne has served as superintendent, I have served as the associate pastor in charge of youth and young adult ministries at First UMC in Cedar Falls. Recently, I was awarded the Pearson Fellowship from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. In the fall, I will be enrolling as a full time seminary student at Garrett-Evangelical seminary. I feel called to work in the area of evangelism. I enjoy youth ministry and have taken youth groups on several evangelism trips in the U.S.A. and England. I love to do art (all kinds), play bass guitar, and love to travel – espe-cially on our Honda Gold Wing motorcycle.” We have a daughter, Sarah, who is married to Brian Thompson. They are the parents of our two precious grandchildren, Trent and Calla. Rev. Anne Lippincott

From Staff Parish: We ask that you welcome Rev. Anne and Steve to St. John’s. Rev. Anne will be preaching on July 2nd and 3rd. She will be out of the office July 4th—8th on a pre-scheduled vacation. Please send cards of welcome to the parsonage: 2237 Fairhaven Road, Davenport, IA 52803.

The June 24, 1949 Tidings lists the staff and when and where they were taking their vaca-tions. During July there were to be 4 guest preachers —two of them from Cornell College. 148 members were named in this issue. Sunday School Pro-

motion Sunday was June 26 with the following para-graph: “Promotion to new departments does not close the church school for the summer months. We expect to continue as effectively as possible during the vacation period. We will be glad to see you every Sunday you are in town.” Church time was changed for the sum-mer: Sunday School at 9 a.m. and Church at 10 a.m.

TROOP #6 NEWS by Wanda Cover

May was a busy month for the scouts and leaders of Troop 6. We conducted CPR training for

half of our scouts and leaders, and we will be training the remaining scouts and leaders at the end of July. We had scouts and adult leaders attend our May outing at the Mississippi Palisades. In spite of rain in the morn-ing, the weather cleared by afternoon so we were able to climb and rappel. We were happy to have a WE-BELO scout and his dad join us for the weekend. In June, Scoutmaster Harold and Aubrey Cover were surprised at the first Order of the Arrow (OA) call-out of summer. Both were “tapped out” for the Vigil level at the same time. OA is scouting’s national honor society, and Vigil is the third and highest level, bestowed by spe-cial selection and limited to one person for every 50 members registered with the lodge each year. Con-gratulations to Harold and Aubrey! Boy Scout summer camp, with a full week of activities, is said to be the highlight of a scout’s year, so we’re look-ing forward to our departure on July 31. This year our troop will be going out of council for summer camp, and we will again be visiting Ransburg Scout Reservation just outside of Bloomington, IN. Alternating between our local camp (Loud Thunder) and other camps provides more merit badge opportunities for the boys. Each camp offers some different programs, which helps to keep our older boys interested. We would appreciate your prayers as we go about our summer activities.

PIECES OF GRACE PIECES OF GRACE

This month we welcome a new Senior Pastor and her family to our family. Last month we said goodbye to George and Martha. I am sure that there will be other changes besides the letterhead and the signs out front. New people bring new perspectives and new styles with them. No one person has the “best” way to take care of things. All we can do is support those who are in leadership positions and continue to give our best to God. This church has been around for many years. Throughout those years there have been changes in leadership and in congregation. People will come and go as will the pastoral staff. There remains one constant though, and that is who we follow as Christians, Christ. In Christ we find our identity and we know our value. Jesus is the same today and tomorrow as He was yesterday. I find that thought comforting in the craziness that is life in the United Methodist Church. We are always trying to do the same thing; we just do it with new people. The constant is that Jesus wants us to love him, and love each other. As we get better at doing that we will grow closer together and closer to Christ.

Grace and Peace, RON

On July 22 United Methodist Women will be holding a workshop in Fellowship Hall starting at 9:30 and lasting until about 2:00. We will be getting out all of the materials we have remaining from last years Children’s Bazaar and checking to see what we need to gather together for this years bazaar on December 3rd. We are still wanting large stuffed animals, jewelry, 4 X 6 picture frames, Christmas items. Remember we charge no more than $2.50 for any item. We will accept other items for moms, dads, siblings, teachers, pets and other relatives. Please keep us in mind. We will also be working on a couple of items for Taste of Autumn

Bazaar being held on October 29th. If you are canning items or making jelly or jam, make an extra few and donate to the bazaar. Thanks. I’m sure all of you are aware of the trafficking problem in this country. You now have an opportunity to get updated information. We have a presentation by former Iowa State Senator Maggie Tinsman, drafter of Iowa’s Human Trafficking Law. On Wednesday, October 12th at 7:00 p.m. in Fellowship Hall she will give all attendees an understanding of the crime and its connection with Iowa. Maggie will explain the different forms of human trafficking as well as current efforts in which churches and church members may participate in the modern abolitionist movement. Dessert and coffee will be served following the meeting. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend. Linda Jantz

Congratulations to Kiersten Klink Onanga who graduated from Mt. Mercy University in Cedar Rapids on May 22nd.

BIX PARTY CENTER PARKING LOT JULY 30, 2011 The annual Bix Party sponsored by P.U.N.C.H (People Uniting Neighbors and Churches) will be needing quick breads, muffins, cookies, water and volunteers. MISSIONS UPDATE by Willie Trusheim

SELF HELP INTERNATIONAL

Our July 2nd and 3rd Manna for Mission Offering is Self Help International in Waverly, IA. They are involved in creative work in Ghana and Nicaragua. For $.21 a day or $55 per year, a child receives one meal a day of QPM porridge a high protein food of corn, barley, malt and sugar. For $75 you can by 50 chickens for eggs and meat for a family and expands to other families. A $100 loan allows a woman to start a business as a baker, or make pottery to sell. For $300 a palm press helps supply palm oil. It lubricates, feeds and fuels human needs. Its like soybean oil in he US. And $175 builds a corn silo to store their shelled corn in preventing spoilage. And $10 buys a pack of QPM for a farmer to plan 1/2 acre yielding 25 bushel per acre. Each of these ideas of support can change the life of a family. Help make a difference in people’s lives—GIVE $1, $5, OR MORE.

FOOD PANTRY UPDATE Another successful month for the Food Pantry. St. John's collected 359 items this month. What a variety we re-ceived: Soup, vegetables, canned meats, pasta, hamburger helper, ketchup, mustard, bisquick, rice, raisins, mac & cheese, instant potatoes, small juices, toothbrushes/toothpaste just to name a few. The food donated will be appreciated by families who are less fortunate than us. Thank you for your kindness. Items needed are pudding cups, powered milk, small juices, small toothpaste/toothbrushes and of course, all the other items you donate each month. If you would like to make a monetary contribution, clearly note this on your contribution and leave it in the church office and this will be put towards the operating expenses of the food pantry. Food Pantry is July 17th. Carts will be left at both doors for your donated items. Thanks to all who contributed during the month of May. Final counts for May will be in the July newsletter.

INGATHERING It’s that time of year again … time to think about how we can help people around the world through UMCOR’s annual in-gathering. Last year St. John’s congregation provided 150 kits (35 health kits and 115 school kits) for ingathering, along with funding to ship them. Our goal this year is 40 health kits and 125 school kits, for a total of 165 kits. We will have our traditional reverse offering in July. We provide slips of paper showing ingathering kit needs … you select a slip or several, and bring the listed items back to church by the end of September. Look for the ingathering donation bin near the wel-come center. We then assemble the kits and deliver them to the nearest ingathering location. We’d also like to issue a challenge to all Sunday School classes to put together a cleaning bucket for ingathering. Any other individuals or groups are welcome to assemble kits and we’ll be happy to take them to ingathering. Our August Manna for Missions offering will support kit needs and shipping. If you are interested in helping with ingathering or need more information, please contact Wanda Cover at 322-4469. I’d love to have your help with this project. Thanks for your support.

RED BIRD MISSION CHANGES In January 2011 Memorial Hospital of Manchester, KY assumed administration of the red Bird Clinic. It is a part of the Seventh Day Adventist Health Care System. They will be supplying a new Doctor for the clinic in July. The Fogleman’s are going to serve in South Sudan that will become a new free Nation on July 9th. They will no longer be a part of the Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church, but will be a part of the Mission Society, an offshoot of the BOGM years ago. They will be working with seventeen United Methodist Churches in rural communities developing clean water, sanitation, disease prevention, and infant care practices. They will need to raise a good portion of their Salary support before going to South Sudan and will no longer receive sup-port through the United Methodist Church General Board of Global Ministries after July 1st. Details for support will come later. Mission training will take place between July and the end of December. Red Bird Dental Clinic, Public Health Nurse and community Outreach Health Programs will still need financial support to carry on prescription assistance, health screening, education and prevention programs. These are vital needs of people of the Red Bird area.
