February 2019 Volume 59, Number 2 A Word from Our President

Hello, Continental Club mem-bers!

Yes, by golly, here I am again. I won-der sometimes just how many of our members turn to page 2 of our monthly newsletter and go “Oh, no, there he is again!” Actually, I hope you all do read my mes-sage, because I want to fill you in on a few things that hap-pened in August, as well as on things coming up in the near fu-ture.

Continental Dance Club had the pleasure of starting August at the great Indiana State Fair. There was a nice showing of members, and a few from the audience joined in the fun. Den-nis Dworski was our DJ for the day, with Monica Lung serving as emcee. I must say I was kind of shocked when Monica turned

t o me, s aying “You’ re on t he mic. When this song is over, please say a couple of encour-aging words to the audience.” Somehow, I stumbled through it without (I hope) offending any-one. If you were not able to be there this year, please plan on joining us next year to promote our club while enjoying a free day at the fair.

I want to give a big thank you to DJ Rog for filling in for the Blue Notes on Sunday, August 11th. We had gotten a last min-ute phone call telling us that Rusty had hurt his back Satur-day afternoon. Rog jumped in to save our Sunday evening program.

I didn’t have the pleasure of be-

ing at the Indiana Roof, but I was told it was a wonderful time and that the dance floor was packed. If you were not able to attend, you missed out on a perfect evening at a great venue.

I know you are excited to hear about our upcoming special Sundays as we dance through the final four months of 2019. September 22nd is our 50s night, October 27th the Halloween dance, November 17th the Barn dance, and finally, our Christ-mas party on December 15th. The best part is, we’re all invit-ed to bring food to share, as well as dress up for each of

these Special Sundays.

I hope each of you, at one time or another, is taking a moment to consider how smoothly our Continental Dance Club runs. The answer is VOLUNTEERS. Volunteers have made this club what it is beginning back in 1955 (the year I was born!). Sixty-four years is a long time, but our volunteers continue to ensure that we have what it takes to survive - and thrive - in the future.

Over the coming months, we will be looking for new volun-teers to join the board of direc-tors to fill the positions of four board members who are possi-bly stepping down. Please con-sider jumping in to serve on the board. We have a couple other

needs you might be able to help with as well. The first

request that comes to mind is to have your membership card and cash/check payment ready, so that we can keep the line at the reception table moving effi-ciently. Second, we would like to request that you take a mo-ment to check out the CDC website (www.continentaldanceclub-indy.com) and share your sug-gestions for improving the ex-perience of online visitors.

I appreciate your time and - I appreciate YOU!

President Dave

MY CDC GARRY PETERSON

“For me, in the late

1960s, returning from

Vietnam and attending

college in Michigan, so-

cial dancing became a

way for an introvert to be

socially accepted,” Garry

Peterson recalls. For a time, he relates,

he dated a certain rather pretentious

lady who thought it was a good idea

for the two of them to join a group of

privileged “elites” who danced month-

ly at North Shore country clubs. Later,

having made an internet connection

with a lady from Fishers, Indiana, Gar-

ry would drive down from Chicago to

join her at occasional Indy Dancers

events.

Career demands plus marriage and

family obligations intervened for a

while, but this January, a little over a

year after his divorce, Garry was ready

to become socially active once more.

Attending an Indy Dancers event in

February, Garry was invited to his first

Continental Dance Club dance, joining

the beginners’ class. Then, at a Heart-

land dance, a certain lovely lady, her-

self an amateur competitor in dance,

inspired him to pursue further training

in the art of ballroom dancing. Now,

after seven beginner lessons at the

Fishers Y, Garry has begun to take

weekly private lessons from a profes-

sional instructor.

Not only a military veteran (yes, Gar-

ry, we couldn’t help noticing all those

medals you wore to one formal CDC

event), Peterson is a veteran of several

careers. First employed in “corporate

America,” he worked his way through

the ranks to vice presidential level.

Later, he served as consultant to

midsized businesses, finally owning

his own business with nearly 50 em-

ployees. Semi-retired in his late fifties,

Peterson became a world traveler.

Sports has been a second ongoing

theme; Peterson has been involved in

drag-racing, water and snow skiing,

sailing, and scuba diving, and still

swims 15 laps daily. He has “outlived

his bucket list,” he observes, so he now

enjoys being part of other people’s

dreams and experiences. Volunteer

activities include serving as Surgical

Liaison at the VA, and volunteering at

the Harbor Light Salvation Army treat-

ment center, providing personal finan-

cial counseling for recovering clients.

Having lived in nine different states,

Garry enjoys no family locally, finding

himself at a social disadvantage when

people around him talk about local

people, places and things. He remains

very close to his two children who live

in the Chicago area, describing them

proudly as “great, self-actualized and

tax-paying,” and to his two grandchil-

dren.

Now just five months

into his big ballroom

dance adventure, Garry

is excited. “Even though

I struggle with self-

confidence issues when I attempt ball-

room dancing, concerned about inade-

quate training and limited exposure to

the art,” he confesses, he has fun and

truly appreciates all the fine ladies at

CDC who “encourage, inspire and tol-

erate my awkwardness.”

As interviewed by board member

Rhoda Israelov

Sports has been a second ongoing theme; Peter-son has been involved in drag-racing, water and snow skiing, sailing, and scuba diving, and still

swims 15 laps daily.
