Reflection on Assignment One- History of CALL (Computer-assisted language learning)

When we were handed this assignment by the lecturer, I, as well as my colleagues considered the amount of respect the lecturer carried with her, with regards to CALL. I have always been an advocate of history. I feel that to fully immerse ourselves in what we attempt to accomplish, it is insurmountable that the origin of our endeavour not be considered. Therefore, after undertaking in this task, I can safely say that not only is the history of CALL revealing, it is also another branch of information and data that is beneficial in the least, a pleasure at the most.

Reflections on Assignment TwoThe lecturer instructed me and

my fellow group mates in constructing a lesson plan to be applied in a classroom. We were required to present this assignment in class.

Reflections on Assignment Three (Article on CMC, or computer – mediated communication)

This assignment required the group members to participate individually in reflecting on an article based on CMC. I was greatly interested in doing this assignment for I have always been comfortable working alone.

It must be confessed that after performing two tasks before within a group, I was a bit overwhelmed with this seemingly enormous task. A figment within the recesses of my imagination, I admit. Completing the assignment enabled me to come full circle with CMC and its significance, especially when communicating across the barriers of language and ethnicity, two factors that seemingly limit communication before. Not anymore, I declare.

Reflections on Assignment Four ( Language via Chat Rooms)

This assignment seemed to me to be the pinnacle of CALL. I ask myself during the planning stage of this assignment, where better to witness the manifestation of CALL itself, where I can witness firsthand, along with my fellow group members, communication through the usage of language, on a multimedia platform? Needless to say, this assignment was greatly anticipated to be provoking.

It was. We (the group members) discovered how language can be manipulated in almost any manner imaginable, to serve one purpose- to get the message across.

We learned that the youth, general supporter of chat rooms, as proven by their participation, are effected greatly by this form of communication, unleashing their linguistic prowess without mercy, and without failure. This assignment was most satisfying, in that it discredits the statement that chat rooms serve no purpose other than idly wasting time. Far from it.

Reflections on Assignment Five (Corpus Linguistics)This assignment is the second last assignment

that the lecturer has handed to us so far this semester. Corpus Linguistics seems to be an encyclopaedia of linguistics, ranging from phonetics to phonology, although it appears that a greater emphasis is placed upon the former. Upon completion of this assignment, I pose two questions that I find ‘entertaining’:

1. Were the forefathers of linguistics exceptionally responsive to the primary nature of language- adaptability?

2. What form will Corpus Linguistics take in ten years time?

I ask myself the first question because it strikes me that this element of CALL can only be used as a reference in the years to come, for at this juncture, question two comes into play. I have observed the morphing quality that all languages seem to possess, be it in terms of slang, diction etc. I cannot help but feel that as helpful as this element is, it may be rendered redundant sooner rather than later.
