Seminar Rules and Structure• Usual format of seminar will involve discussion of a
concept and then responding to questions I post on the concept.
• Have your unit• It is important that you try to participate rather than
simply watch. This will not be a lecture, but more like a problem-solving session.
• Come to seminar prepared! Be ready to ask questions, do the problems, and answer questions that your classmates ask.
![Page 11: Welcome MM255 – Business Math Seminar 1 Nand Arora Instructor](https://reader030.vdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032612/56649ee65503460f94bf6f39/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Seminar Etiquette• The same behavior rules apply for our
seminars as you would have in a face-to-face class. Once class starts, you wouldn’t carry on a conversation with your neighbor.
• If you arrive late (or leave early) YOU DO NOT NEED TO ANNOUNCE IT TO EVERYONE. Just go about your business and don’t disrupt the seminar.

Questions before we start a review of math concepts….
22
![Page 23: Welcome MM255 – Business Math Seminar 1 Nand Arora Instructor](https://reader030.vdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032612/56649ee65503460f94bf6f39/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
Addition of Real Numbers• Same Sign Rule: if you are adding two terms of the same sign -
both positive or both negative - then add the values and keep the sign. For example:
4 + 6 = 1012 + 3 = 15-3 + (-8) = -11-2 + (-5) = -7
23
![Page 24: Welcome MM255 – Business Math Seminar 1 Nand Arora Instructor](https://reader030.vdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032612/56649ee65503460f94bf6f39/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
What about fractions?
For fractions and mixed numbers, you must have a common denominator before you perform the operation. Unless told otherwise, always reduce fraction answers to lowest terms. For decimal numbers, line up the decimal points.
24
![Page 25: Welcome MM255 – Business Math Seminar 1 Nand Arora Instructor](https://reader030.vdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032612/56649ee65503460f94bf6f39/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
• 1/5 + 3/5 = 4/5• -2/3 + (-4/3) = -6/3 = -2• ½ + 2/5 = 5/10 + 4/10 = 9/10• -3/4 + (-1/3) = -9/12 + (-4/12) = -13/12• -3.4 + (-2.25) = -5.65
Practice Problems
25
![Page 26: Welcome MM255 – Business Math Seminar 1 Nand Arora Instructor](https://reader030.vdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032612/56649ee65503460f94bf6f39/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
• Different Signs Rule: if you are adding two terms that have different signs - one term is positive and the other is negative - then subtract the smaller from the larger, and take the sign of the larger number.
3 + (-4) = -16/7 + (-2/7) = 4/7-7 + 9 = 2-11/12 + 8/9 = -33/36 + 32/36 = -1/365.4 + (-1.111) = 4.289
Addition – Different Signs
26
![Page 27: Welcome MM255 – Business Math Seminar 1 Nand Arora Instructor](https://reader030.vdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032612/56649ee65503460f94bf6f39/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
1 + (-2) + 3 + (-4) + 5 + (-6)
• Starting at the left, add the first pair of numbers using the appropriate sign rule, take that answer and add it to the next number using the appropriate sign rule, and so on until you’re done.
• Note: This only works if ALL operations are ADDITION.
Addition – Multiple Terms
27
![Page 28: Welcome MM255 – Business Math Seminar 1 Nand Arora Instructor](https://reader030.vdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032612/56649ee65503460f94bf6f39/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
• 1 + (-2) + 3 + (-4) + 5 + (-6)• = -1 + 3 + (-4) + 5 + (-6)• = 2 + (-4) + 5 + (-6)• = -2 + 5 + (-6)• = 3 + (-6)• = -3

• Subtraction is really an addition of a negative quantity.
(I don’t really need to use the parentheses here, but it helps sometimes.)
Subtraction of Real Numbers
4 - 9 = 4 + (-9)

5 * 7 = 5(7) = (5)(7) = 5·7
Note: 5x7 is also correct, but since x is frequently used as a variable, it is better to use another notation.

• Multiply 3 times 5 = 15
• Figure out how many total places there are to the right of the decimal in the two factors.(3 in 0.003 ) + (1 in 0.5) = (4 places)
• Add zeros as place-holders in product.

Look at this example.
3.45 x 4.082 =
• How many places are there to the right of the decimal point?
• Five; so, the answer will have five places to the right of the decimal.
• The answer is 14.08290
• The last zero can be dropped and the answer would be 14.0829.
36
![Page 37: Welcome MM255 – Business Math Seminar 1 Nand Arora Instructor](https://reader030.vdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032612/56649ee65503460f94bf6f39/html5/thumbnails/37.jpg)

Sign rules for multiplication & division: • Two positives = positive• Two negatives = positive• One of each sign = negative • In general, perform your multiplication and division
normally, and just remember to put on the correct final sign (positives being invisible, of course).
