The Impact of the Cross(Mark 14-15)
INTRODUCTIONWe’re reading through the New Testament in 2011, onechapter each weekday, and we’ve just completed Mark 13through Luke 1. The climax of each of the four Gospels isJesus’ crucifixion and resurrection. But consider TheImpact of the Cross on those who were there:
I. The enemies of Jesus: delighted by the cross (Mark 15:25-32)
II. The soldiers: unmoved by the cross (John 19:23, 24)
III. The disciples: distressed by the cross(Mark 14:27-31, 43-50)
IV. The bystanders: transformed by the cross
A. Simon: from bystander to believer (Mark 15:21)
B. Centurion: from antagonism to affirmation(Mark 15:39)
C. Joseph and Nicodemus: from cowardice to courage(John 19:38-40)
V. The thief: saved by the cross (Luke 23:39-43)
A. He was lost
B. He was looking
C. He was loved
CONCLUSIONThe Impact of the Cross varied from person to person andfrom group to group. What impact is the cross of Christhaving these days in your life?

Applying Today’s Sermon to Your Life
1. As we read through the New Testament together, one chapter
each weekday, are you staying on schedule, asking God to speak
to you through His Word, writing down your thoughts, reviewing
it with a friend, and receiving a sermon from it each Sunday?
Why is it wise to put so much effort into the Word of God?
2. Why do you suppose each of the four Gospels highlight Jesus’
crucifixion and resurrection in such detail? What might we
conclude from this?
3. After the Apostle Paul had visited Corinth and planted the church
there, he wrote back to them and said, For I resolved to know
nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him
crucified (I Corinthians 2:2). What does Paul’s statement tell us
about the priority of the gospel and the centrality of the cross of
Christ in teaching, preaching and daily living?
4. How many statements did Jesus make from the cross, as recorded
in the Gospels? Write out each statement, then speak to its
meaning. Explain the impact of each statement as well:
A. Luke 23:34
B. Luke 23:43
C. John 19:26, 27
D. Matthew 27:46 and Mark 15:34
E. John 19:28
F. John 19:30
G. Luke 23:46
5. In light of what Jesus did for you on the cross, what would you do
for Him?
• forgive someone who has wronged you? Yes No
• repent from your sins and be baptized? Yes No
• become a generous steward for His glory? Yes No
• find your place of service in His church? Yes No
• share the message of the cross with others? Yes No
• take every thought captive to His obedience? Yes No
• go where He wants you to go? Yes No
• seek the welfare of others above your own? Yes No
6. Read Luke 2-6 this week, write down your thoughts, review it
with a friend, and receive a sermon from it next Sunday. Draw
near to God with quiet time in His Word.
