IfirstbecameconnectedwiththeUSDLAaround2006throughmyleadershipintheTexasDistanceLearn-ingAssociation.ShortlythereafterIattendedmyfirstconferencewithabestfriend,BennieTschoerner,whowasalsopartoftheTxDLAleadership.Onceagain,wehadthatfeelingthatwehadfoundmoreof“ourpeople”andtooursurprise,outsideofTexas.Whoknew?!?

OurdesireattheUSDLAisforyoutonotonlysitbackandlearnfromthebestofthebestindistancelearning,likethroughourUSDLAAwardwinners,buttobecomeactiveparticipantsinthatexperience.Itallstartswithattendinganevent,likeyouarenow,butovertimeshouldexpandintofocusednetworking,volunteering,leading,andsomedaymentoringthenextgeneration.

ThereareseveralpathsforyoutoexploreandtakeinordertohelpyougetthehighestlevelofengagementaswellaspersonalandprofessionalgrowthwiththeUSDLA.LikeBennieandI,thiscanbeginthroughaChapter,butthenfilterintohelpingmakethingshappenwithaUSDLAcommitteelikeCommunicationsorMembership.Ormaybeyou’reoneofourinternationalfriendsthatwouldliketobeapartofourGlobalPartnershipcommittee.Thepointistoidentifyhowyoucangetthemostoutofyourexperiencebywhatyoucanputintotheexperience.

Inclosing,recentlyagoodfriendofmine,fellowUSDLABoardmemberPatrickPluscht,madeacommentaboutoneofourChaptersthatIfeelisalsotrueabouttheUSDLA.Ithasbeen30yearsandtheUSDLA“enduresevenasdistanceeducationisbeingmainstreamedbecauseitfocusesonwhat’sreallyimportant—connectingpeopleandgrowingnewleaders,notjustshowcasinggreattechnology.”Asyoustartandstrengthenrelationshipsoverthenextfewdaysandbeyond,pleasetrytorememberthat,andfocusonhowyoucanbestcontributetoyourfamily.

Near term future vision (CBE, Alt credentials, etc.). These tracks will discuss the future direction where distance education is heading, should head, success metrics that are currently in place or should be developed to show value.

TF Turbocharging the Future
