The Sacrament of the Altar

Advent Evangelical Lutheran Church teaches and

believes that through the body and blood of Jesus

Christ, offered under bread and wine in the Lord’s

Supper, God gives to His children the forgiveness

of sins. Since this is a sacred meal, Advent

distributes the Lord’s Supper to communicants who

have been prepared to receive it. Please see our

Communion Policy for Visitors on the back page.

• If you are a member at an LCMS parish

please speak with one of our pastors

beforehand so that they may greet you and

inform you accordingly regarding our practice.

• If you are a visitor and have not been con-

firmed or hold to a confession of faith that

differs from Advent and the Lutheran Church

– Missouri Synod, please refrain from receiving

the Lord’s Supper until you have spoken with

our pastor. If communing, please prepare with

prayers in hymnal on pages 308, 329-330.

• Distribution - If communing, at the appro-

priate time in the Divine Service, please

approach the altar via the center aisle. When

directed to a position at the rail, bow and kneel

without waiting (you may also stand as needed).

After you receive the sacrament, please stand,

bow and return to your pew via the side aisle.

The final blessing will be made at the end of the

distribution and the covering of the elements.

"Have no fear little flock!"

Luke 12:32 Our Lord is yet gracious and merciful in these uncertain times. In the midst of the many changes to our daily lives and routines, God's Word and His love for you remains certain and steadfast. May this bulletin and service be a blessing to you as we remain, together, IN THE WORD.

Ninth Sunday after Trinity Today’s Readings 2 Samuel 22:26-34 1 Corinthians 10:6-13 Luke 16:1-9

The Steward’s Shrewdness Sanctified “The master commended the dishonest manager for his shrewdness” (Luke 16:1–9). The steward’s shrewdness is praiseworthy for two reasons. First, he knew the master would be merciful. He trusted that the master would honor the debts he forgave in the master’s name. In the same way, though we have squandered our heavenly Father’s possessions in selfishness and sin, Jesus is the Steward who has canceled our debt, knowing that His forgiveness will be honored by the Father because of the holy cross. Secondly, the steward was shrewd in using oil and wheat to provide for his earthly welfare. So also do these earthly elements aid us when pressed into heavenly use in the anointing of baptism and the wheat of the Lord’s Supper. Those who have the Sacraments will have an eternal home when their earthly home fails. These provide us aid in times of temptation (1 Cor. 10:6–13). For the Lord is our strength and a shield to all who trust in Him (2 Sam. 22:26–34).

Exploring the Hymn of the Day What Is the World to Me? The origin of this fine eighteenth-century hymn is a little bit cloudy. Most students of the matter agree that the author was Georg Michael Pfefferkorn (1645–1732), a teacher and pastor in Germany. However, the hymn first appeared anonymously, and lately it has been attributed to Balthasar Kindermann (d. 1706). It was translated into English by August Crull, who was born in Germany in 1845. He emi-grated to the United States at an early age, and graduated from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, in 1862. He served as pastor and teacher in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Grand Rapids, Michigan, and died in 1923.

Our new logo, chosen by the congregation, now graces the front of our redesigned

bulletin. It was submitted by a graphic designer, Anna Piro, a fellow LCMS member at St. John

Lutheran Church in Wheaton, IL. She writes to us of her design: “The cross formed by the church

architecture (the buttresses in the ceiling and roof, rotated and duplicated, along with the gothic

windows). Luther’s Rose added at the center of the cross.”

P Our help is in the name of the Lord,

C who made heaven and earth.

P If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand?

C But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared.

P Since we are gathered to hear God’s Word, call upon Him in prayer and praise, and receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in the fellowship of this altar, let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition. Together as His people let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner.

C Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life.

Amen.

P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives

you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I

therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the

Holy Spirit.

C Amen.

Old Testament Reading 2 Samuel 22:26–34

“With the merciful you show yourself merciful; with the blameless man you show yourself blameless; with the purified you deal purely, and with the crooked you make yourself seem tortuous. You save a humble people, but your eyes are on the haughty to bring them down. For you are my lamp, O LORD, and my God lightens my darkness. For by you I can run against a troop, and by my God I can leap over a wall. This God—his way is perfect; the word of the LORD proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him. “For who is God, but the LORD? And who is a rock, except our God? This God is my strong refuge and has made my way blameless. He made my feet like the feet of a deer and set me secure on the heights.”

A This is the Word of the Lord.

C Thanks be to God.

Anthem Laudamus Te by G. Paisiello Used by permission St. James Music Press 1999

Laudamus te, benedicimus te, adoramus te, glorificamus te.

Gratias agimus ti bi, propter magnam gloriam tu am.

Translation: We praise you, O Lord.

We bless you, we adore you, we glorify your name.

We offer you thanks. Your power is glorious.

Epistle Reading 1 Corinthians 10:6–13

Now these things took place as examples for us, that we might not desire evil as they did. Do not be

idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to

play.” We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand

fell in a single day. We must not put Christ to the test, as some of them did and were destroyed by

serpents, nor grumble, as some of them did and were destroyed by the Destroyer. Now these things

happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end

of the ages has come. Therefore, let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. No

temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be

tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you

may be able to endure it.

Holy Gospel Luke 16:1–9

P The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the sixteenth chapter.

C Glory to You, O Lord.

[Jesus] also said to the disciples, “There was a rich man who had a manager, and charges were

brought to him that this man was wasting his possessions. And he called him and said to him,

‘What is this that I hear about you? Turn in the account of your management, for you can no longer

be manager.’ And the manager said to himself, ‘What shall I do, since my master is taking the

management away from me? I am not strong enough to dig, and I am ashamed to beg. I have

decided what to do, so that when I am removed from management, people may receive me into

their houses.’ So, summoning his master’s debtors one by one, he said to the first, ‘How much do

you owe my master?’ He said, ‘A hundred measures of oil.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bill, and sit

down quickly and write fifty.’ Then he said to another, ‘And how much do you owe?’ He said, ‘A

hundred measures of wheat.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bill, and write eighty.’ The master

commended the dishonest manager for his shrewdness. For the sons of this world are more shrewd

in dealing with their own generation than the sons of light. And I tell you, make friends for

yourselves by means of unrighteous wealth, so that when it fails they may receive you into the

eternal dwellings.”

P This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C Praise to You, O Christ.

Nicene Creed

C I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead

and the life T of the world to come. Amen.

P The Lord be with you.

C And also with you.

P Lift up your hearts.

C We lift them to the Lord.

P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

C It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

P It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, for the countless blessings You so freely bestow on us and all creation. Above all, we give thanks for Your boundless

love shown to us when You sent Your only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ, into our flesh and laid on Him our sin, giving Him into death that we might not die eternally. Because He is now risen from the dead and lives and reigns to all eternity, all who believe in Him will overcome sin and death and will rise again to new life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

Prayer of Thanksgiving

P Blessed are You, O Lord our God, king of all creation, for You have had mercy on us and given

Your only-begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.

In Your righteous judgment You condemned the sin of Adam and Eve, who ate the forbidden

fruit, and You justly barred them and all their children from the tree of life. Yet, in Your great

mercy, You promised salvation by a second Adam, Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, and made

His cross a life-giving tree for all who trust in Him.

We give You thanks for the redemption You have prepared for us through Jesus Christ. Grant

us Your Holy Spirit that we may faithfully eat and drink of the fruits of His cross and receive the

blessings of forgiveness, life, and salvation that come to us in His body and blood.

Hear us as we pray in His name and as He has taught us:

Lord’s Prayer

C Our Father who art in heaven,

hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

The Words of Our Lord

P Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My T body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”

P In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He

gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My T blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Pax Domini

P The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C Amen.

5 Jesus, source of lasting pleasure, Truest friend, and dearest treasure, Peace beyond all understanding, Joy into all life expanding: Humbly now, I bow before You; Love incarnate, I adore You; Worthily let me receive You And, so favored, never leave You.

6 Jesus, sun of life, my splendor, Jesus, friend of friends, most tender, Jesus, joy of my desiring, Fount of life, my soul inspiring: At Your feet I cry, my maker, Let me be a fit partaker Of this blessèd food from heaven, For our good, Your glory, given.

7 Lord, by love and mercy driven, You once left Your throne in heaven On the cross for me to languish And to die in bitter anguish, To forego all joy and gladness And to shed Your blood in sadness. By this blood redeemed and living, Lord, I praise You with thanksgiving.

8 Jesus, bread of life, I pray You, Let me gladly here obey You. By Your love I am invited, Be Your love with love requited; By this Supper let me measure, Lord, how vast and deep love’s treasure. Through the gift of grace You give me As Your guest in heav’n receive me.

Daily Prayers – How to Pray

Our Lord Jesus Christ has given us the “Our Father” so that we may call upon our heavenly Father as His dear

and upon retiring for the day. These are easy prayers to teach children and learn as adults. He first directs us

to pray the Lord’s Prayer and the Creed morning and evening and then the little prayer given as an option. He

also includes the Lord’s Prayer at meals with the prayers for Asking a Blessing and Returning Thanks. Below is

Luther’s Morning Prayer. Might praying this, or the other Daily Prayers, inform and change your thoughts on

your day or the day of your children?

I thank You my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this

night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every

evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and

soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me.

Amen

Luther then tells us “Then go joyfully to your work, singing a hymn, like that of the Ten Commandments, or

whatever your devotion may suggest.”

Are you desiring the Lord’s Supper? Times will continue to be set aside for individuals and families of our congregation to receive absolution and the Sacrament for the forgiveness of sins and strengthening of their faith. Please, if in the coming weeks you choose to remain home, know we are here for you should you desire to receive the precious Body and Blood of our Lord.
