Mumbai: At about 11.30 am on Saturday, the most recognised aircraft in the world,Air Force One,which was car-rying US President Barack Oba-ma and his wife, First LadyMichelle Obama, crossed over

from Karachi air traffic controlarea and entered Indian air-

space over the Rann of Kutch.A little over an an hour lat-

er, at 12.48 pm, the blue-and-white Boeing 747-200 B made asurprise touchdown at theMumbai airport by opting forrunway 14. This made it,perhaps, the first-ever VVIP aircraft to have ever landed onthe lesser-used, smaller runway, which isinfamously shunned by some internation-al airlines.Air Force One had been expectedto land on the main runway 27. Air ForceOne then taxied to Apron Lima, where Ma-

rine One, the US Presidents helicopter andits decoy, along with three other US marinechoppers, were parked. At a distance awaywere CISF sniffer dogs, the Bomb Dispos-

al Squad Unit, fire and res-cue tenders, US secretservice agents with darkglasses and walkie-talkies,

and a crowd of khakhi-clad CISF personnel and

    policemen.The aircraft door

opened at 12.54 pm, butthen several minutes ofwait followed as the stepladder took a bit of time to

be aligned with the aircraft. Finally, at 1.02pm, the President and his wife MichelleObamain a grey dress walked out hold-ing hands. They were received by Maha-rashtra chief minister Ashok Chavan,Union minister of state for corporate af-fairs Salman Khurshid and others.

Mumbai: At his first official en-gagement on Indian soil, PresidentBarack Obama on Saturday told agathering at Mumbais Taj MahalPalace Hotel, which bore the brunt of26/11 terror, that the United Statesand India were bonded not just byshared ideals but also commonwounds of terrorism.

By striking the places where ourcountries and people come together, those who perpetrated these horrificattacks hoped to drive us apart, hesaid at an event soaked with symbol-ism. But just as Indian citizens losttheir lives on 9/11, American citizenslost their lives here on 26/11 alongwith the citizens of many nations.

Obama talked about how the In-dian and American people had prayedtogether at candlelight vigils and howboth governments were now workingcloser than ever, sharing intelligence, preventing more attacks, and de-manding that the perpetrators bebrought to justice.

But the US president made no men-tion of Pakistan, although the US hasnow firmly come around to the Indi-an position that most global terrorstrikes were being launched from Pak-istani soil.

Obama addressed a mixed audi-ence that included Taj bosses RatanTata, Raymond Bixon and KrishnaKumar,Union minorities affairs min-

ister Salman Khurshid, chief secre-tary J P Dange, mayor Shraddha Jad-hav, US Ambassador Timothy Romer,Indian Ambassador to the US MeeraShankar, US counsel general PaulFolmsbee and survivors of the terrorattack after a private meeting with 12Taj staffers who survived and formergeneral manager Karambir Kang who

lost his wife and two sons at the ho-tel. Obama began his speech with why

Mumbai was chosen to start hislongest official foreign jaunt.

Theres been a great deal of com-mentary on our decision to begin ourvisit here in this dynamic city,at thishistoric hotel. To those who haveasked whether this is intended to senda message, my answer is simply, ab-solutely, he said.

Mumbai is a symbol of the in-credible energy and optimism thatdefines India in the 21st century, hesaid, standing against a scenic back-drop of the Gateway of India at theChambers terrace.

Dual use: Woos hosts withtech, voters with 50K jobs

    TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Mumbai: In the spirit of give andtake, US President Barack Obama onSaturday signalled the easing of ex-port controls on dual use technologyeven as he announced signing of dealsworth $10 billion with US companies, something he said would create 50,000jobs back home.

Hammered by plummeting ap-proval rating and the loss of the Houseof Representatives to the Republicans, and under pressure to offer his Indi-an hosts something more tangible tochew on rather than soaring rhetoric,Obama used his meeting with the highpriests and priestesses of India Inc toplacate both constituencies it was

a dual use speech, as one person pres-ent at the gathering quipped to TOI.

His 20-minute special keynote ad-dress at the US-India Business and En-trepreneurship summit at The Tridentwas understandably peppered by ref-erences to creation of jobs both in theUS and India and other key issues suchas the need for a strong partnershipbetween the two largest democraciesof the world, developing the spirit ofentrepreneurship and innovation andthe need for India to lift certain tradeand investment barriers.

Even as we strengthen our nationalsecurity, we should make sure that un-necessary barriers dont stand in theway of high-tech trade between ourcountries. We will work with India to

fundamentally reform our control onexports, which will allow greater co-operation in a range of high-tech sec-tors to strengthen our relation, he saidcommenting on the issue of dual usetechnologies, something the Indian sidehas been lobbying for a while.

He, however, in the same breath, asked the Indian side to reciprocateand reduce trade barriers. The easingof export rules could benefit entitieslike DRDO and Isro, which havebeen denied technologies from the USin the past.

But,on the whole, it was really jobsand emphasis on partnership thatdominated the US presidents speech, who is on a three-day maiden trip toIndia, which he himself described ashis longest to any country, after tak-ing over as the president.
