To help you prepare before joining us in Sep-tember, this guide outlines your reading list, the equipment you’ll need for your course, and any projects you should do over the summer. Re-member to look at your course timetable in this guide too.

PRE-ARRIVAL In this section you’ll find a list of activities to complete before you join us in September.

READING LIST

You’re not required to read any specific academicbooks before starting the course, but we ask you to read a book on fashion (from a management perspective), retailing or fashion retailing.

You should write a synopsis of the book and be ready to present it to the group during the Induction Week.

Below you can find some suggestions – but these are just to be used as examples and you may select any book you like. If you want to discuss your choice feel free to email your Course Leader, Miguel Martins at [email protected]. Remember to bring the book with you for the Induction Week.

VISITS Field trips inside the UK are normally free, but you are expected to pay the cost of travel associated with these field trips, such as travelling to London for company visits and exhibitions – you may expect 4 or 5 such organised visits each year.

In the past, the course has not organised overseas trips but students may join trips organised by other courses. These trips are not compulsory but there is a charge for students to join. European trips are likely to cost around £300 for travel and hotel.

SUMMER PROJECT

RETAIL ORIENTATION: STORE PROFILE FIELD RESEARCH

Select a street or road with an acceptable number of stores. This may be in your own town or city or any other town or city. Avoid very long streets or roads that may be densely populated with stores, such as Oxford Street or New Bond Street. Get a map of the street and surrounding region from Google maps and try to characterise it (sociodemographic and economic analysis).

Take photographs of all the fashion stores in the street (if there are any special points of interest in the street, such as a market or a church, you may want to get a photo of it as well) and place them on your map.

What can you tell us regarding the stores, the brands stocked, the products offered, the shopping experience, the customers attracted to these stores (you may want to spend a couple of minutes in front of each store to help you with this characterisation)?

Are there differences from one side of the street to the other (even and odd numbers) or from the beginning of the street to the end?

Prepare a PowerPoint presentation with your visuals and analysis, and be ready to share your findings with the group during the Induction Week. This presentation should be of high professional quality and create a positive impression on the group.

EQUIPMENT/MATERIALS NEEDED

No specific material/equipment is needed for this course.

Some units may require the use of a portfolio – in this case you will be required to buy a paper folder and you will need to print your work in colour. During in-class presentations you may be required to hand in a copy of your slides that should be printed.

Final-year students may present their final project at Graduate Fashion Week and this participation may generate additional printing costs.
