I assist students with all aspects of planning for graduation, from making course selections to gaining relevant career experience through volunteering and internships. My priority is to help majors achieve their educational goals.

I enjoy assisting first- and second-year students with course selection and the initial layout of their four-year academic plan. I also serve as one of the department’s Academic Recovery Coaches and will meet with students who are having a difficult semester.

THE ENGLISH STUDENT ADVISORY BOARD 2015–2016

Your Peer Mentors:

I am a junior English and French major who enjoys the study of language as it relates to literature and speech. As a member of the English Student Advisory Board I hope to share

my passion for the art of language and my love of craft. My plans for the future include pursuing a career as a Literary Agent or Talent Agent, and possibly attending Law School.

I am a third-year English and Spanish major with a minor in Ethnic Studies. I am from Lincoln and enjoy finding new spots around town that I haven’t visited before. I like to bike and run

and when I’m not in school I’m most likely to be found around the Haymarket or on my couch watching Harry Potter. So far I have not put too much thought into life after graduation, aside from wanting to travel. UNL offers many opportunities to explore different areas, and I highly suggest taking advantage of every opportunity. I know that in my own experience these opportunities are what have provided direction and insight.

JANETTE AVELAR

Hi! My name is Mariah. I’m a senior studying English, Spanish, and Editing & Publishing. After graduation in December, I hope to pursue a career as a literary agent or to work as an editor

at a publishing company. Originally from Ravenna, a small town in south central Nebraska, I am looking forward to all the big city opportunities a career in publishing has to offer! I’ll get that first taste of the city this summer, as an intern at Curtis Brown, Ltd. in New York City. I am an unapologetic coffee addict, a travel enthusiast, and an avid reader. I also enjoy antiquing and horseback riding whenever I’m home.

MARIAH REICKS

I’m from Hastings, NE and am currently a senior English major with a minor in Humanities in Medicine. Away from school, I am an Optometrist Technician working at ProEye Group, and I

volunteer at the Indian Center. I have been in Nebraska most of my life, but here are a few interesting facts about me: I was born in Galang Indonesia, I had a pet monkey, and I can recite Dumb and Dumber by heart! With my English degree, I plan to pursue graduate studies in critical and literary theory and try to get a career in academia. I will be the English Advising Office intern this fall.

I’m a sophomore English major focusing in Creative Writing with minors in Business and (probably) Digital Humanities. Outside of class, I am an editor for Laurus, the undergraduate

literary magazine on campus. I also work in the Women’s Center as a Resource Assistant. My plans after graduation are still forming, though I would love to either go into publishing of some sort or acquire a Master of Library Science and become a librarian. I was born and raised in Omaha. I spend my spare time reading, writing fiction, and watching too much Netflix.

LORI NEVOLE

Originally from Kearney, Nebraska, I’m a Junior English and Film Studies major with a minor in Spanish. Outside of class, I volunteer at the Writing Project at the Malone Center where I help work

with elementary students on their literacy skills. I love reading, watching movies, and staying involved on campus. I hope to begin studying Digital Humanities in the coming year as I continue finding ways that my English major will prepare me for the future.

ROZ THALKEN

I am a junior English and Global Studies major (with minors in Arabic, Human Rights & Humanitarian Affairs, and National Security Studies) from Lincoln, Nebraska. I am interested

in global literatures and am working on a UCARE project this year about Egyptian literature surrounding the Arab Uprisings with Professor Basuli Deb. This summer I interned with the Lincoln Asian Community and Cultural Center, where I worked on grant writing and resource development projects. I would like to work somewhere in the international nonprofit world when I graduate. Outside of the classroom, I work as a mentor for the Nebraska College Prep Academy, and I serve as one of the leaders of The Rock, a Christian group on campus. I also like to write poetry and spend as much time as I can with my family and friends.

I’m a junior English major and communication studies minor with a concentration in editing and publishing. I am from the small town of Panora, located in western Iowa. Besides being involved

with the English Student Advisory Board, I’m an active member in the campus ministry CRU. The highlights of my past year include being a teacher’s assistant for English 200 and being awarded a UCARE to do research with the university for the summer. When not in Andrews, I can be found studying on the second floor of the Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center or rock climbing at Outdoor Adventures. I’ve has also been trying, and failing, to develop a love for running.

ELLIE WILKE

I am a senior English major from Omaha, and I have minors in Education and Latina/Latino American Studies. My post-graduation goals include receiving my certification to teach and

pursuing education. I would like to teach English in a Spanish speaking country. Outside of my English major, I enjoy reading and volunteering at the YMCA, working and mentoring students, and being a member of the English Student Advisory Board. I will be the spring English Advising Office intern.

ELAYNA GONZALEZ

I’m a junior English and Ethnic Studies major with minors in Business, Digital Humanities, History, and African-American Studies. I grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, which is deemed a cultural

melting-pot and which spurred my love of learning about and experiencing different cultures. After I graduate, I hope to pursue a career in Editing and Publishing. I may also attend law school and eventually practice Intellectual Property Law. Outside of class, I am a Student Ambassador for the College of Arts and Sciences and work as an office assistant at the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film. I love to read, write, craft, and spend time with friends and family as well.
