Baptisms in February Holy Baptism holds the first place among the sacraments. Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit and the door which gives access to the other sacraments.

Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church. Jesus commands his disciples to proclaim the Gospel to all nations and to baptize them.

ACCW Luncheon and Speaker

The topic of Eve Ortiz's speech is "Ministering to Wom-en in Prison" on Tuesday, March 20th, Nativity Catholic Church in Torrance.

All women are invited to attend a day of prayer and fel-lowship with other Catholic women.

The day begins with Registration at 9:30am, followed by our speaker, then Mass celebrated by Rev. Alfred Her-nandez, lunch, and concludes at 1:30pm.

Catholic Relief Services This weekend there will be a special collection. This collection helps support six catholic agencies that touch more than 100 million lives around the world. The funds from this collection help provide food to the hungry, support to displaced refugees, and Christ’s love and respect to all people. Look for the special envelopes in the pews.

Women's Guild Offering Balance

We blend spiritual, service, and social activities. We offer spiritual support and camaraderie to women of our parish. We are the official parish “go to” group for ma-jor events of the parish, like the Church’s 125th anniversary celebration, Msgr Mike's 40th anniversary of his ordination as a priest, and our Annual Shining Stars event honoring members of our parish family for their years of volunteer service in ministry. They perform service work for our parish community.

Get to know your like-minded women of the parish at our potluck meeting on April 11. Create new friendships and witness our spiritual sharing as we strive for increasing holiness. Q: Q: One of the seven sacraments of the Church is the Sacrament of the Eucharist. How does the Catechism Of The Catholic Church present the efficacious sign and sanctifying action of the divine Eucharist which is offered, "... in remembrance of me."

A: The catechism, over the course of 29 pages and 97 paragraphs presents a discussion of the Eucharist in some of the most inspirational and beautifully evocative, almost poetic terminology found anywhere in the cate-chism. Here in these pages we read about, "the inex-haustible richness of this sacrament..."

Our Choir offers music that echoes the spirit of the Eucharist , "We are many parts, we are all one body..."

St. Augustine adds, "...we who are many are One Body In Christ."

The Eucharist not only com-pletes Chris-tian initiation along with Baptism and

Confirmation, it is recognized by the Church as, "The source and summit of the Christian life, of Ecclesial life."

It's the Lord's Supper, the breaking of the bread, Holy Communion, the bread the wine, the body and the blood, the soul and divinity... The Eucharist.

The heart and summit of the Church's life. The pledge of glory and salvation. This is my body, this is my blood, given up for you. These graces are ever-present in the eternal life that is the Eucharist. Read about and ponder these graces in your catechism. Know and appreciate your faith!

Men—Spiritual Head of the Family Men-We are warriors, husbands, fathers and called to be men of God as we lead our families towards spiritual maturity.

We are problem solvers, get things done and provide and protect those we love around us from physical harm. We would sacrifice our own lives to protect them. And yet, when faced with protecting them from spiritual attacks and harm, we can ignore this responsibility and leave them completely

defenseless against an enemy looking to harm their eternal soul. We don’t make the connection that bringing our personal weaknesses and defects into the home has consequences for those we love.

By our authority as head of the family, our issues are passed on to our wives and children. What we do on the internet, our anger and impatience, the inappropriate second glances that we indulge in, all weaken our ability to protect our family. The battlefield is our mind and imagination.

We can be victorious in protecting your family. In order to lead them spiritually, you must be committed to being a spiritual man. You cannot stand hypocrisy, or posturing in others. In order to lead and protect your family, you must do more than pretend. You must be committed to following Christ and His example. It’s not too late to get started. Arm yourself for battle. Make a commitment. Go to confession, attend Mass, read ‘Perfectly Yourself’ and pray the rosary with your family. Godspeed!

Gospel Reflection

Why is the world the way it is? We all wonder that from time to time. Each successive generation projects rose-hued longing on the past and casts furtive glances at the impending future. We see forces beyond our control in nature and in the news. The world is changing and we're being pulled out with the tide. In the face of this confusion, today's Gospel features one of the most oft-quoted Scripture verses of all time: "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life." But if Christ has come, why is the world so challenging? Why is the world still - to our eyes - being carried off in a proverbial hand basket? Jesus' response is a deeply personal one. "This is the verdict, that the light came into the world, but people preferred darkness to light." Patterns arise, habits are formed, and systems become engrained, but each is the result of an interconnected web of human choices.

Where do we stand? Our answers, perhaps, vary from week to week, hour to hour, missed traffic light to spilled coffee to teenage child's rebellion. The world isn't perfect because we aren't perfect. Our parish is flawed because we're flawed. Our families need work because every one of us needs to be converted. Christianity is a process, not a destination! This Sunday, Jesus invites us to consider our own lives. Where in our own lives do we prefer darkness to light?

What flaws are we trying to hide? Humbly acknowledge those places today. Ask God for the grace to be transformed. Share with your spouse or a friend where you'd like to improve this week. "Whoever loves truth comes to the light, so that his works may be clearly seen as done in God."

When we are tempted, we often convince ourselves that we can hide our sin. But as men and women since the beginning of time have discovered, there is no hiding from God. "Thou hast searched me and know me." David said. "Even before there is a word on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it all" ( Psalm 139:1,4). God’s mercy and forgiveness is bigger than your sins. Now is the time to end this defect. Don’t despair. God Bless you!

St. James Preschool Staff Spotlight Let’s talk about…Chapel Time at St. James Preschool! Chapel Time is led by our very talented Barbara Molina.

Barbara, also known as Mrs. Molina visits each class once a week and brings songs, stories and prayers to the children. She teaches about God’s love for us and His wonderful

creations in our world. She leads two prayer services during the school –year, one at Thanksgiving and again at Easter.

“I love being the minister of God’s love to our children at such a young age, and watching them grow with the knowledge of God’s presence and His never-ending love for them.”

Barbara wears many hats at St. James Parish. Along with leading the Chapel Time program, she is also the Preschool Office Administrator, the Altar Server Coordinator, and the Sunday Hospitality Coordinator.

So the next time you see her at coffee and donuts after Mass, be sure to say, “Hello.” But child development is her passion, with almost forty years in the field and a Bachelor’s of Arts Degree in Child Development from California State, Los Angeles, she is at home at the Preschool. The children at St. James Preschool are blessed to have Mrs. Molina in their lives.

Pilgrimage Northern Ireland with Fr. Jim September 3– Sept. 14th, 2018

This will be Fr. Jim’s first trip to Northern Ire-land. Points of interest include Belfast, Derry and Dingle, and Killarney.

Yes, Skellig Michael Island, Dingle Ireland is home to the temple in Star Wars—The Force Awakens. See the movie and then enjoy the view of this island where it was filmed, from the shoreline. Fr. Jim’s birthplace is Ventry-Dingle. Catholic Cathedrals in Belfast and Derry and St. Patrick’s final resting place are also on this trip. Habitat for Humanity Build Days

The Habitat for Humanity Catholic Coalition has set aside one Saturday each month until June for a multi-parish build day. As a member parish of the coalition, St James can provide up to 8 volunteers for each date.

The build days will take place in Long Beach on March 17, April 14, May 12 and June 16.

Four homes are being built at the site and are in various stages of construction, so there will be a variety of tasks. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old. More details will be provided to volunteers as each build day approaches. This is a great opportunity to work

Everyday Stewardship

For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. John 3:16 When I first saw each of my three children, I loved them with a love that I did not realize existed in me. These were flesh of my flesh, bone of my bone, and were the result of the love between their mother and me. This made them mine.

My love for them continues to be so strong as they grow older and I cannot fathom ever losing them. Then I look around and see friends of mine who have lost a child. It makes me want to hold them tighter and not let go.

But as I have continued to grow in this stewardship way of life, I realize that these three wonderful human beings and not really mine. They belong to God. They are entrusted to me in this world, but they belong truly to the One who loves them even more than I do. Yet, it is not easy to offer them back to God, especially due to tragedy.

If that day ever were to come, how could I handle it?

Not only did God offer his Son to the world, the offering was done with full knowledge that the Son would die a brutal death. God loves us so deeply he placed Himself in the very position that any parent dreads the most.

So this Lent I will look at my children and I reflect on the depth of love a parent has for a child and the even more profound love God has for us.

Responsorial Psalms and Readings

Lighting a Candle We do not honor statues but the one whom that statue

or image represents. The light signifies our prayer offered in faith coming into the light of God. With the light of faith, we petition our Lord in prayer, or petition the saint to pray with us and for us to

the Lord. The light also shows a special reverence and our desire to remain present to the Lord in prayer even though we may depart and go about our daily business.
